Introduction
We will discuss an important and extremely beneficial topic in
different field and area such as metalworking, mechanical engineer
woodworking, etc. it has wide applications called Machine Vises or
vices and clamps. There are differences between the machine vises
and the clamps. The clamp only used to hold and stabilize the
objects or work piece and it consists of the body, administrator part
that hold a work piece (arms or jaws) and the handle. The vise or
vice used in holding and stabilizing the workpiece or the objects to
do a work on this objects such as drilling, sawing or cutting, Leveling
and softening surfaces and it consists of fixed and movable jaws and
the handle.

The aim of the research
The aim of this research or this article is to clarify the importance of
clamps and machine vises and to know what machine vises or vices
and clamps mean. And also the difference between them and the
types of each of them and their components and the areas or
applications of their usage and knowledge of the method of
operating them as well as how to collect them and which materials
used in manufacturing of them and knowing the importance of
taking safety measures when conducting work using them.

4
The machine vices/vises
The definition of the vices
It is a mechanical apparatus used to secure an object to allow work to
be performed on it. It is used in engineering field.
The job of the vices
Vices are used as holding device on machines like lathes, milling
machine, drilling machine etc. and by toolmakers for holding jobs.
The components of the vices
The vise consists of two parallel
jaws to hold a work-piece; one of
them is fixed and the other is
movable through a screw, a cam,
or a lever and there are a handle to
control the installation of the work.
How is it work?
 The movement of the vice controlled by a handle that is located
on the outer a vice end through the screw which then moves the
sliding jaw.
 When we rotate the handle in anti-clockwise direction, it will
move the sliding jaw away from the stationary jaw and open the
gap between them.
 When we rotate the handle in clockwise direction, it will move the
sliding jaw closer to the stationary jaw and closing them together.

5
The types of the vises
• Woodworking Vice
• Metalworking Vice
(Engineer’s Vise)
• Pipe Vice
• Vacuum Vise
• Clamp-On Vise
• Combined Vise
• Handheld Vise
• Angle Vise
• Cross Vise
• Off-Center Vise
• Rotary Vise
• Sine
• Saw
• Die makers’ Vise
• Pin Vise
• Rigging Vise
The advantages and disadvantages of a vise

advantage disadvantage
The risk of vice moving or
light weight and Portable
falling during work applications
Ideal and useful for The portable vices with an
tasks, which need the working integrated clamp may not fit
in confined spaces onto all surface edges
when not in use ,it Can be
easily dismounted and stored
away

6
The usage of vises
Woodworking jobs
The vise holds wood sturdy while the work is completed.

Metalworking project
The vise can hold the metal in place when filing, cutting or modifying its
size and shape.
Sawing
Using of vise when cutting or sawing is much safer as the vise prevents
the risk of injury to a user’s hands when cutting.
Gluing
When working with glue the vise provides a great advantage that, the
objects can secured into the jaws of the vice, then left to dry safely.
Drilling
The vice allows holding the object securely in place and the vice leaves
both hands of the user free for holding the tool rather than having to
use one to hold the work piece.
Adjusting or screwing
The vice is a useful when loosen or tighten a stiff object, such as a nut
and screw as it holds the screw sturdy while the wrench used to adjust
the nut.
Cutting conduit
Vice is an ideal for securing electrical conduit safely and firmly when
cutting.
Sandpapering or filing
The time will saved rather than the user having to move the object
constantly around to get it in the convenient position.

7
The materials from which the machine vices made
Metalworking, woodworking and machine vices made up of two
materials. Main body, the jaws and slide of a vice from cast of high-
quality iron, while the screw, jaws surface, and handle from cast of
steel. The type of iron used depends on each model and manufacturer..
For example the slide and main body of a heavy-duty bench vice, such
as an engineer’s vice, is cast from either grey or ductile iron.
Vice maintenance and care
We should follow these follow steps to keep or care of the machine
vices:
1. Removing rust
2. Cleaning and oiling
3. Replacing parts
4. Repainting
5. Good Storage
What you need to do to stay safe while using a vise?
1. We must stay away from the handle extension and extra clamping
pressure to ensure you do not damage your work surface and vise.
2. Do not tighten the vise more than is required.
3. We should cover our face and eyes with goggles, shield and safety
glasses.
4. We must make sure that the vice is securely fitted to the work -
table.
5. We should keep the vise and material size at a substantially
compatible range.

8
The clamps
The definition of clamps
A clamp is a fastening device used to hold or secure objects tightly
together to prevent movement or separation through the application of
inward pressure.

The job of clamps

It is a tool designed to prevent any movement or separation between
two objects, in order for work applications to be completed.
The components of the clamps
1) frame
2) Jaws or arms
3) Screw
4) Handle
How is it work?
 Handle controls the jaws and some types have a traditional screw
that adjusts the clamp.
 When we rotate the screw, the clamp will closes around the work
piece and therefore the pressure applied to keep it firmly in place.
The usage of a clamp
 Carpentry and Woodworking
 Metalworking
 Drilling
 Filing
 Gluing
9
The types of the clamps
 Screw clamps
 Bar clamps
 Angle clamps
 Quick-Release Clamps
 Locking clamps
 Toggle clamps
 Flooring clamps
 Band clamps
 Miter clamps
 Pipe clamps
Clamp’s capacity
The capacity of a clamp determined by considering two clamps
features: throat depth and jaw opening
Throat depth
It is a deep of the jaws (by the distance from the top edge of the jaws to
the side of the frame).
Jaw opening
It is how far the mouth of the jaws can open and it will indicate the
maximum capacity of a jaws.

10
Example
The figure shows a clamp with block, which used to hold the metal or
work piece has a Circular section, where the work piece placed over the
block and hold it by threaded screw.
The requirement is drawing and assemblage by AutoCAD program this
parts to get the clamp with block.

Conclusion
The machine vices and the clamps are an essential instrument in
metalworking and carpentry applications and they provide stability
you need to get the job done with so much accuracy and creativity.
Clamps made from a variety of different materials, depending on the
individual type, manufacturer and model, whereas metalworking,
woodworking and machine vices made up of two materials. Main
body, the jaws and slide of a vice from cast of high-quality iron, while
the screw, jaws surface, and handle from cast of steel. We should
follow Safety precaution and be careful during work with these tools
In order to preserve ourselves.

The abstract
First, we discuss in the topic of the machine vise, where it is the
mechanical devices that used in the engineering field to hold a work
piece rigid at a stationary position and consists of two parallel jaws,
handle and screw and .The movement of the machine vices controlled
by a handle. It has different types for many different applications and
has advantages more than its disadvantages. The type of iron used to
manufacture its parts depends on each model and manufacturer. There
are safety procedures or steps, which we must follow them to keep
ourselves and also to keep and care the machine vises.
Secondly, we discuss in the topic of clamp, where the clamp is a
fastening tool commonly used in a various applications, which only
designed for holding and stabilizing objects or work piece. It consists of
frame, Jaws or arms, screw and handle. When we rotate the screw, the
clamp will closes around the work. It has different types for various
applications and it has capacity.
