My second lesson was on a new
concept of making an equation true and making sure each side of the equation is the same. This is the first lesson that I taught and also witnessed where the majority of the students did not understand the concepts. During the lesson when I ask for group participation and have them answer questions with me, many students were not on task and there were a lot of side conversations during the lesson, because they did not understand the concept. After direct instruction I go around to check in on how students are doing and if they understand the lesson. Every table I walked to explicitly told me they were confused or did not know what to do. I had to evaluate how I was going to expand the lesson and help with their understanding. I first though about having them stop their independent work and as a whole class work on some problems together, but I decided that many of the children needed more one-on-one support. So, I went to table groups and worked in small groups with the students. Together, we did problems so they were getting immediate feedback and were able to talk about each problem with me. I noticed after working with students one on one they were able to do more problems on their own. Some students, however, did not get it at all and these were the students that have been behind all year. I wish I was able to do this lesson again the next day since many children did not understand to see if re-teaching would help or if I needed to change how I was explaining the concept.
