Capstone Overview
Proposal/inquiry question
 Creating a business case for a new SkyTrain line to North Vancouver from metro town
and through Burnaby
 Final product: create a video of the route and station locations, record a PowerPoint
presentation going over the overview, ridership projections, cost, community benefits,
future, and summary.

Overview
 Where the line goes
 Station location
 Right of way

Ridership projections
 What transit currently serves the route
 Ridership generators such as malls, event centers, business, and residences around
stations
 How many people travel on any given day on the route currently and what is the mode
share on the route currently.
 Ask city planners how they figure out ridership projections

Cost projections
 Estimate the cost of the project based on the cost per kilometer of past or current
projects
 Figure out the cost for different methods of construction elevated vs at grade vs tunnel
boring vs cut and cover.
 Estimate how long construction could take by locking at different construction projects
on going
 Ask city planners of Langley how they figured out how long it would take to build the
Langley SkyTrain extension

Community benefits
 How stations can bring economic benefits and provide better access to communities
 Station accessibility, how people get to the stations parkandride, bus, biking, walking
 Transit oriented development around stations so more people have access to transit
and provide more houses to the greater Vancouver area.

Future
 Create a rough draft for a phase 2 extension of the line from Metrotown to Oakridge 41 st
station
 Create a rough draft for a phase 3 extension of the line from Oakridge 41st station to
U.B.C
 How to future proof the line for additionalcapacity if needed.

Conclusion/Summary
 Summarize what it talked about in the pervious slides
 Talk about my experience making this presentation

Capstone Timeline
Week 1
 Create capstone overview/Timeline
 Reach out to Langley city urban planners and set up a meeting to discuss project
 Prepare questions to ask them and get feedback on capstone proposal

Week 2
 Start to make the video of the route a station location
 Consider the feedback from the city planners and plan the right of way of the line
 Create the overview slide on the power point

Week 3
 Research the current transit lines serving the route and the daily ridership of those lines
 What major ridership generators does the line connect to and how much ridership could
those draw
 The current amount of people who travel the route and the mode sharepercentages
 Create the slider for the ridership projections

Week 4
 Create the coast projection slide by researching and answering the questions from the
overview
 Figure out where funding comes from
 State how this project fits into Translinks 2050 plan

Week 5
 Create the communitybenefits slide by answering the questions from the project
overview
 Find sketches or create sketches of the changes brought to the communities around the
stations.
 Plan new bus routes to bring people to the stations plan for bike storage facilities
 Take common community concerns with transit projects and say how we will address
them

Week 6
 Plan the route for the phase 2 extension
 Create visual picture showing the extension
 Same for the phase 3 extension
 Say how we are going to future proof the line for extra capacity if needed

Week 7
 Write the summary slide for the presentation
 Record the presentation
 Hand in my final assignment on Dec. 20
