Exam tips:
Candidates answer three compulsory questions on three texts which may be on a similar topic.
Candidates write all their answers in the space provided on the question paper.
Text A and Text B will be 700–750 words in length and Text C will be 500–650 words in length.
Candidates should spend approximately 15 minutes reading the texts. (These 15 min is not extra
time; it is included within 2 hours of exam time)
Comprehension task: this question requires candidates to respond to Text A. (15 marks)
Candidates respond to a series of sub-questions. These include short answers testing understanding
of both explicit and implicit meanings.
Summary task: this question requires candidates to respond to Text B. (15 marks)
Candidates answer a selective summary task in their own words. Candidates write their summary
as continuous writing of no more than 120 words.
Short-answer questions: this question requires candidates to respond to Text C. (10 marks)
Language task: this question requires candidates to respond to Text C. (15 marks)
Candidates write about 250–350 words, responding in the following text type:

Two questions on the novel will be given. Both of these will be extract-based
questions. Relay your points across effectively, with evidence and justification, along
with your personal opinion as well as an analysis of the writer’s effect. The stem
question should determine the focus of your response. You are required to answer
one out of the two questions given in the question paper.
Exam Tips:
❖ Distribute the time well. Use 5 minutes to read the entire paper and keep the last 10
minutes to revise the paper.
❖ Be sure that you understand what you are being asked in each question.
❖ Make sure you address the four assessment objectives while you answer the
