EXPT

NO.
PREPARATION OF
LYOPHILIC SOL,
AIM: lo prepare a colloidal solution (so) of starch.

APPARATUS REQUIRED: Beaker (250 m),

rod,Tripod.stand. Wire gauze, starch (2-3g). filterBcaker
paper,(100 ml), funnel,
distilled water. glass

THEORY:

1. Alyophilic
sol is the colloidal system in
which there is strong affinity
between particles in dispersed phase and
dispersion medium. Therefore.
these sols are readily obtained l by heating a mixture of
and dispersion medium. dispersed phase
, when water acts as dispersion medium, the lyophilic sol is
called
hydrophilic sol.
Ahydrophilic sol can be prepared by heating solid substance with
dispersion medium (water).
3 Starch is a naturally ocurring polysaccharide. It is a condensation
polymer of a large number of a-D- glucose units joined through
glycosidic linkage. It is colourless, tasteless and amorphous solid. It is the
most abundant polysaccharide found in vegetables, fruits, seeds and
nlants. Starch is found in wheat, maize, rice, potatoes, barley etc.

PROCEDURE:

" Take 2-3g of starch in a mortar and grind it with the help of pestle. Add
3-4 ml of
distilled water and grind it to make a thin paste.
" Transfer this paste to a 100ml beaker. Take 100 ml of distilled water in a
250 ml beaker and heat it.
" Now pour the starch paste slowly into boiling water with stirring into
beaker.
" Boil the solution for 3-4 minutes and keep on stirring constantly with a
glass rod.
Stop heating and allow the beaker to cool.
FIx up the filter paper in a funnel and filter the solution.
" The filtrate obtained is the sol of starch.
RESULT: Lyophilic sol of starch was prepared.

PRECAUTIONS:

" Allthe apparatus should be cleaned properly.

Stiring should be done constantly during addition of paste of starch to
boiling water.
" Distilled water must be used for the preparation of sol.
