Find the next term of the sequence.

Conjecture: The numbers are formed by doubling the preceding number

in order to obtain the succeeding numbers.
Inductive reasoning is the type of reasoning that forms a conclusion
based on the examination of specific examples.

Deductive reasoning is the process of using facts, rules, definitions, or

properties to reach a valid solution.
All dolphins are mammals, all mammals have kidneys; therefore all
dolphins have kidneys.

In the Philippines all Engineering students with full subject load have
tuition fees more than P30,000.00. Janice is an Engineering student,
thus her tuition fees is more than P30,000.00.
Show that (x + y )2 = x 2 + 2xy + y 2

From a square of a number : (x + y )2 = (x + y )(x + y )

By distributive rule : = x(x + y ) + y (x + y )
By distributive rule : = x 2 + xy + yx + y 2
By addition rule : = x 2 + 2xy + y 2
Detective Mark Joseph reaches a conclusion about a thieft’s height
beacuse he knows the relationship between a man’s height and the
distance between footprints.

During the past 10 years, the university increases its tuition fees every
other year. There was an increase in tuition fees last year, so there is
no increase in the tuition fees this year.
Examples:
1. Pick a number. Multiply it by 6, add 8 to the product, divide the sum
by 2, and then subtract 4. Cite 2 examples and use inductive reasoning to
make a conjecture.
Conjecture: The given procedure produces a number that is three times
the original number.
2. Use deductive reasoning to show that the given procedure produces a
number that is one less than the square of the number. Pick a number.
Add 1 to the number, and then multiply the result by one less than the
number.
Conjecture: The given procedure produces one less than the square of the
original number.
Counterexample - is a specific case in which a statement is false. It takes
only one counterexample to show that a statement is false.
1. The square of a number is always even.
2. All CITU college freshmen students are above 18 years old.
3. When Gab did not eat lunch, he must not feel well.
A sequence is an ordered succession of numbers and formed according to
a definite rule. It is represented as

a1 , a2 , a3 , . . .
Examples:
1. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 . . .
2. 1, 4, 9, 16 . . .
3. 100, 50, 25, 12.5, . . .

the nth term of the sequence...

1. predict the next term
2. write the formula for the nth term
Examples:
Determine the an of the sequence 3, 9, 25, 51, 87, 133,..
Examples:
Determine the an of the sequence -21, -16, -9, 0, 11,..
