 Practice unlocking unfamiliar words in different texts by finding context clues
 Appreciate the importance of re-reading in finding context clues

C. Presentation
Just like a detective, we use clues. There are words/phrases around unfamiliar words that can help
us understand the meaning of a word.

Context clues are hints or "clues" that give you the sense of unfamiliar words in a text. Context clues are
hints in the passage, paragraph, or individual sentence.

These clues help us decipher the meaning of unfamiliar words in different ways.

Note: Encourage students to suggest words that fit in each blank and talk about other words in the sentence
that helped them make their suggestions. Providing scaffolded practice with words that students can pull
from their mental "word bank" builds confidence and proficiency with the strategy of looking for clues in
surrounding text.

Importance of Context Clues


It helps us in giving meaning to unfamiliar words or expressions.
It helps us to become better and perceptive readers.
They come in handy when dictionaries or internet is not available.

The Philippines is considered a melting pot which is a place where people of different races, religion,
beliefs, and tradition blend together as one. This diverse and varied culture makes Filipinos unique
from the rest of the world. Filipinos give much importance to their values. Despite of the modern
influence, they still retain their traditional practices. One of their trademarks is hospitality like
welcoming the guests with a big smile and treating them warmly. In times of challenges and
catastrophies, they don’t easily give up as resilience is one of their traits.

Exercise A. Read each question carefully and write the letter of your correct answer in your
