(6) Lorong, Johor Phase 2B: Dari PersimpanganBandar Seri Alam/ Taman
Rinting Ke Pasir Gudang". the road upgrading project is to upgrade Pasir
Gudang highway (FT17) is a four (4) lane dual carriageway route with U5
standard that connects the second link highway (second link) to the interchange
of Jalan Pasir Gudang. This road which connects Johor Bahru city centre is the
main route for heavy vehicles to the industrial area and Pasir Gudang port. The
existing Level of Service (LOS) is F and need to be upgraded. This project
involves the phase 2B project which will be upgraded starting from the
interchange of Bandar Seri Alam/ Taman Rinting and ending at the interchange
of Pasir Gudang highway with a road length of approximately 5.0km.

5.0 PLANT, MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT

• Lorry
• Boiler Machine
• Screeder Machine
• Chalk
• Stringstetc as applicable.

6.0 METHODOLOGY

6.1 Preparation of Site

Thermoplastic materials shall be applied only on a surface which is clean and dry. It
shall not be laid over loose mud or over old material or paint marking incompitable
with the paint applied. A tack coat or undercoat shall be fully compatible with the
marking paint and the road surface. The rate of application of tack coat or undercoat
shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction and to the satisfaction of
the consultant.

6.2 Laying Thermoplastic

• Prepare thermoplastic materials, gas barrel, boiler machine, screed machine

and all equipment.

• Check site condition and determine the type of lanes required. The surface of
road pavement must be clean and dry.

• Positioning of cones, temporary signboards, and barriers to be

commenced 1000m before the construction site on one direction.

• Heat thermoplastic materials using boiler machine until temperature reaching

200- 2300C about 75-100 minutes.

• Change the road marker shoe according to the required marking width
(1000mm, 150mm., 200mm and 300mm).

• The marking thickness can be freely adjusted in a regulated scope adjusting

road marker shoe.

• Placed the hot thermoplastic from boiler machine into the paint tank at screed
machine.
• Place the glass beads into glass beads into glass beads bin. The glass beads
will drop on through glass beads dispenser during application.

• Hands push the screed machine while walking at the required site location.

• Upon completion, clear up all spatters, splashes and smirches of marking

material.

6.3 Protection of Markings

All marking shall be protected from traffic until they have dried sufficiently so that no
pick-up by vehicle tyre will occur.

6.4 Thickness
Thermoplastic material shall be laid to the following thickness and shall be measured
from the surface of the pavement :

i) For synthetic hydrocarbon resin binder

• Screed lines : not less than 2mm not more than 5mm
• Extruded lines : not less than 2mm not more than 5mm
• Sprayed lines other than yellow lines not less than 1.5mm
• Sprayed yellow edge lines not less than 0.8 mm

ii) For gum or wood resin binders

• Screed lines : not less than 3mm not more than 5mm
• Extruded lines : not less than 2mm not more than 5mm
• Sprayed lines other than yellow lines not less than 2mm
• Sprayed yellow edge lines not less than 2mm not more than 3mm

6.5 Retroreflectivity Requirements

Retroreflectivity is the ability of a road marking reflect light from a vehicle’s headlight
back to the driving postition of a vehicle. Initially it will be determined by the amount of
glass beads or reflective elements spread on the marking. The continuing
performance of the marking is determined by the amount and quality of glass beads
included in the body marking.

6.6 Defective materials or Workmanship

Materials which are defective or which have been applied in an unsatisfactory manner
or to incorrect dimensions or in a wrong location, shall be removed by approved
chemical or mechanical.

6.7 Clearing Up
The contractor shall clean up all spatters, splashes and smirches of the marking
materials completely

6.8 Opening traffic

The completed road markings shall not be opened to traffic untill the material has fully
set and this will usually be not less than 1 hour after the material has been laid.

6.9 Removal of Road Markings

The unwanted road markings shall be removed from the pavement in such a way to
avoid any possible confusion of motorist especially in wet conditions.
The contractor shall removed the road markings completely by blasting, grinding,
scraping, burning off or jabbing action using a suitable blade tool without damage to
the underlying road pavement
