2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Blemish
A blemish is an obstruction (dark blemish), reflection, or refraction of light (light blemish) that is
visible, but out of focus in the projected image under specified conditions of inspection (see Table 1).
It is caused by a particle, scratch, or other artifact located in the image illumination path.
A dark pixel is a single pixel or mirror that is non-functional (stuck) in the OFF position.
A bright pixel is a single pixel or mirror that is non-functional (stuck) in the ON position.
An unstable pixel is a single pixel or mirror that does not operate in sequence with parameters
loaded into memory. The unstable pixel appears to be flickering asynchronously with the image.
Border defects are bright blemishes (see 2.1) or bright pixel defects (see 2.3) in the non-active area
that may be visible in front projection mode. This include:
1) the “pond off mirrors”(POM),the band of partially functional mirrors in the off position only.
2) The dark metal area outside of the POM.

Installation
Choosing a Location
Your room layout or personal preference will dictate which installation location you select. Take into
consideration the size and position of your screen, the location of a suitable power outlet, as well as
the location and distance between the projector and the rest of your equipment.
25
Obtaining a preferred projected image size
The distance from the projector lens to the screen, the zoom setting, and the video format each
factors in the projected image size. BenQ has provided separate tables of dimensions for both 16:9
and 4:3 screen ratios to assist you in determining the ideal location for your projector.
For example, if you are using a 16:9 screen with 80 inches diagonal, you are suggested to place your
projector within a range between 2.34m to 3.18m from the screen. The ideal height of your projector
lens center will be level with the bottom or top side of the screen.
26
27
Connecting various equipment
You can connect the projector to any type of video equipment, such as a VCR, DVD player, digital
tuner, cable or satellite box, video game console or digital camera. You can also connect it to a
desktop or laptop PC or Apple Macintosh system.
The projector can connect multiple video equipment at the same time by using different cables.
Make sure you select right signal input to display.
In the connections shown below, only certain cables are included with the projector. Other cables
are commercially available from electronics stores.
You are required to use a HDMI cable when making connection between the projector and HDMI
devices. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) supports uncompressed video data
transmission between compatible devices like DTV tuners, DVD players and displays over a single
cable. It provides pure digital viewing and listening experience.
Be sure to match the corresponding colors between the cables and the terminals.

If YCBCR signals (480i, 576i) is selected at Component 1 or Component 2 inputs, the input signals
will go to video decoder automatically.
The S-Video and Composite video inputs can accept NTSC, PAL, SECAM signals.
4. Both graphic and video port signals will be processed by the scalar (Oplus RM-103). The scalar
will convert input signals into RGB 8:8:8, 24-bit signals by downscaling or up-scaling.
1. Mux is high bandwidth multiplexers (AD8183). The Mux select YPBPR1 or YPBPR2 by
controlling HDTV_CTRL signal. The output of Mux will go to AD9883A.
2. A/D-decoder (AD9883A) is used for decoding RGB or YPBPR analog signals to digital signals
(RGB 8:8:8) which provide 24 bit true color resolution.
3. A Schmitt NAND gate (74AHCT132) is used to accept TTL Hsync and Vsync signals. This
projector can support separated (H/V) and composite (H+V) sync signals. It doesn’t support
SOG signal.
4. HDMI Receiver (SII9993) can support HDMI signals. It supports HDTV signals up to
720p/1080i resolutions.
5. The EDID EEPROM is used to store the EDID data, included PC and Video timings. The PC
and HDCP video player will read the EEPROM data via EDID link in the DVI-I connector.

The video decoder can accept 480i, 576i via component 1 and component 2 input connectors. It also
supports NTSC M, NTSC-J, PAL (included PAL M, PAL N), and SECAM via S-Video connector and
composite video connector.
This decoder will decode video inputs to ITU-R BT.656 digital format (DI_IN[2.9]). The interlacing
digital video outputs DI_INA[2..9] will go to de-interlace processor FLI-2310.
The de-interlace processor accepts parallel digital ITU-R BT.656 data with H/V sync. The output
format is YCBCR 4:2:2 (V_IN[0..15]). This output is progressive output with 31.5K Hsync and
27MHz pixel clock.
The SDRAM (2M x32) U11 is needed when FLI-2310 converts interlace video input to progressive
video output.

This CPU is used for controlling whole electronic boards and peripheral devices (thermal control
and IR receiving). For essential calculation and storage, it has been set up with SRAM (128K x16),
Flash ROM (256K x16) and EEPROM. The SRAM is responsible for calculation. Flash is stored the
system software.
2. Scalar Rembrandt-103
Rembrandt-103 can process dual channel data: graphic port and video port data. It receives data
with YCBCR 4:2:2 (video input) as well as RGB 8:8:8 (graphic input). Rembrant-1’s processing also
needs to install 3 set of SDRAM.
3. EEPROM
The series EEPROM (AT24C128, 128k) stores the system information, included factory and user
data.
4. RS232 Driver/Receiver
This projector can use RS232 download connector to download new software or control this
projector by RS232 commands. The RS232 Driver/Receiver is used to drive / receive RS232 signals
between CPU and download connector.
54
5. IR receiver:
The front IR receiver accepts IR signal from front side direction. The carrier frequency is 38kHz.
55
3. DLP Processor
The function block of DDP1010 includes video graphic processing, micro-controller, formatter,
real-time control and system support function. DDP1000 accepts RGB 4:4:4 signals from the scalar,
and formats the signals into XGA DMD acceptable signals.
DDP1000 is designed to work in conjunction with a single 128Mbit RDRAM and an associated
Direct Rambus Clock Generator (DDWG) chip
2. Flash:
The micro-controller of DDP1010 operates entirely from a single external Flash device (U4). The
Flash device provides micro-code, configuration parameters and PWM sequences.
The DAD1000 will generate DMD reset signals MBRST[0..15] as well as VCC2 (7.5V) for DMD
chip.
4. Fan control:
In this projector, there are four fans for cooling the system.
i. Fan 1 (Main Fan): for cooling the lamp, light pipe and color wheel
ii. Fan 2 (Blower): for cooling the lamp,
iii. Fan 3 (Power Fan): for cooling the power module and ballast
iv. Fan 4 (DMD Fan): for cooling the DMD chip
The four fan controllers are used for controlling the four fans independently. Each fan has a
FANSPIN output to each fan controller. The fan controller can use this signal to detect if the fan is
spinning or not. If the fan stops, the CPU will turn off the DMD RESETZ and PWRGOOD signals,
then the DMD system and Lamp will be turned off.
The thermal sensor on the lamp box is used for detecting temperature around the Lamp box.
The intake thermal sensor will sense the intake temperature. The CPU will read temperature from
the fan controller. The CPU will compare temperature of lamp box sensor and temperature of intake
sensor, then control the speed of fans. If temperature is out of limit, the CPU will turn off the
projector system.

5.3.3 Power Factor Correction
The Power Factor Correction (PFC) like a Boost converter . The AC mains voltage is rectified by a
bridge and the rectified voltage delivered the the boost converter . This using a switching
technique ,boost the recdtified input voltage to a regulated DC output voltage Vo . The boost
converter consists of a boost inductor (L) , a controlled power switch (Q) , a catch diode (D) , an
output capacitor (Co) ,and a PFC controller . PFC’s goal id to shape the input current in a sinsoidal
fashion , in-phase with the input sinusoidal voltage .
61
5.4.1 Snubber circuit
The snubber circuit, which is reduce the spike voltage .This had its benefits in the Safe Operating
Area (SOA) of the semiconductors ,and it lowers the spectral content if any radiated RFI thus
radiating less RF energy.
In a flyback converter operated in the discontinuous mode, the energy stored in the flyback
transformer must be zero at the beginning and end of each swiching period . During the on-time
energy is stored in the transformer and energy taken from the transformer when the switching
transistor turn-off, the stored energy is all delivered to the output .
62
Choosing the best rectifiers for any switching power supply design is an important process . The
rectifiers are the largest source if loss within switching power supplies .To choose the best rectifier ,
one must understand the parameters that affect their efficiency . The most important rectifier
parameters are the forward voltage (Vf) and the reverse recovery time . The forward voltage drop
creates a loss just by having voltage across the device while high currents are flowing through it .
and the shortest reverse recovery time will be minimized the loss.
The seconddary referenced error amplifier control system is implemented with the TL431 . The
device consists if an accurate 2.5V reference, error amplifer a, and driver . The output voltage is
sensed , diveded by R5 and R6 ,and applied to the inverting of the error amplifier is internally
connected to the reference voltage . The frequency response of the error amplifier is determinde by
63
the compensation network cinsisting of R3 an C1, and the high frequency gain setting R4 . The
optocouple diode current is limited by R7. the optocoupler drives the error signal into the feedback
pin of PWM IC.

Put the detector in front of the projection lens and to decide distance.
Watch the oscilloscope and align its setup to get the stable and clear waveform. The height and width
of waveform shape are all two units (See Fig, 1).
76
Use the “Æ” and “Å” key to increment or decrement the color wheel delay value
The default CW delay value is 70 and the waveform is ahead on the right of the waveform under
blue color. (No matter the waveform is square or not, let the waveform is ahead on right first.)(See
Fig. 1)
Then decrement CW delay value to see the waveform to be square. Please notice one point that to
stop decrease the delay value when the tilt waveform on the right side just become flat.(See Fig. 2)
After finish step 9, to check 32 gray ramp. To make sure low gray levels of blue color and high gray
levels of Red color are in the balance situation (RD will join the CW Delay alignment process during
