c. Identify (1) why the community uses the genre of the written text and (2) how the written text demonstrates
the community’s purpose in using the genre (this will be your controlling idea):
Purpose Why: The TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences uses text in the flyer because it
can be mass-produced, and it can be placed around campus or given out to people interested
or willing to partake in the study.
How: The organization uses written text in the flyer as an easy form to find people who
might be interested in participating in a psychological problem study. The organization
included a QR code in the flyer because it gives people an uncomplicated way to sign up for
the study.

Section 2: Body Paragraph 1

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #1 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):
Point 1 The TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences organization included text in the flyer
that states that the psychological problem study is for students ages 18-35.

b. Identify the quoted evidence from the written text that supports the above point:
Quoted “The TAMIU-Community Mental Health Project is recruiting students, ages 18-35, to
Evidence 1 participate in evidence-based interventions aimed towards effective coping and improving
mental health.”

c. Explain how the quoted evidence supports the above point:

Explanation 1 The quote above shows that the TAMIU community guiding the study is looking for
students aged 18-35 to participate in their study about mental health to help look for an easy
solution to psychological problems.

Section 3: Body Paragraph 2

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #2 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):
Point 2 The organization uses a flyer because it can be mass-produced and placed or passed out
around campus.

b. Identify the quoted evidence from the written text that supports the above point:
Quoted It has a big title that states. “College of Nursing and Health Sciences: Community Mental
Evidence 2 Health Project.” Most of the writing is brief and straight to the point, and the flyer has a
picture of two people that takes up most of the flyer.

c. Explain how the quoted evidence supports the above point:

Explanation 2 We know it is a flyer because it is a one-sided sheet of paper that can be placed on a bulletin
board or handed out; furthermore, the title is enormous, and the picture is very eye-catching.
The text on the rest of the flyer is easy to read, and it comes with a QR for extra
information.

Section 4: Body Paragraph 3

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #3 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):
Point 3 The flyer has also included a code to make it easy for people of all ages to sign up for the
psychological problem study they are trying to inform people about.

b. Identify the quoted evidence from the written text that supports the above point:
Quoted “Sign up here” QR CODE “For more information: Angelica Michelangeli 956.326.2454
Evidence 3 amichelangeli@tamiu.edu”

c. Explain how the quoted evidence supports the above point:

Explanation 3 The quoted evidence supports that it is super easy for people to sign up for the study and be
able to look at more information that might not have been placed on the flyer.

Section 5: Conclusion

a. Reiterate (1) why the community uses the genre of the written text and (2) how the written text demonstrates
the community’s purpose in using the genre:
Purpose Why: The TAMIU College of Nursing and Health Sciences uses the text in the flyer solely
because it is easy to be distributed around and it is cost-effective. With this to their
advantage, the organization will be able to gain people who might be interested in the study
to sign up.
How: The written text demonstrates the community’s purpose is finding people for their
mental health study. By including the age of the people who are eligible to participate, using
the flyer genre, and including a QR code they effectively spread the word about their study.

b. Describe why your insight about the community’s use of the genre / written text is important / significant:
Importance My insight on the community’s use of genre is significant because it gives a good idea of
what it is to see the flyer from an outsider's perspective. I got to find the flyer the same way
any other person would, so I got a first-hand experience of how significant the flyer genre is
and its effect on people.

c. Describe what readers should do with this knowledge:

Implications After reading, readers should use this knowledge to be able to identify what genre something
is and how to effectively use it for the information they are trying to spread. Readers can use
this knowledge in their everyday lives and hopefully be able to use it to their advantage.
