ENGL 1301 Genre Analysis Outline Assignment

Instructions: Following the example of Dr. Nelson in the Genre Analysis Outline Demo video, organize your
analysis of the genre and rhetorical situation of your written text. Complete each chart with information from
your genre analysis notes worksheet in order to plot what you need to discuss in each section of your essay.

Section 1: Introduction

a. Identify the community that uses the written text you have analyzed:

Explanation 1 The quoted evidence shows the specific dates and time you would typically find in a
weekday-based schedule.

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #2 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):

Quoted  Some text is in a different color to show that those classes need to be signed up for.

Explanation 2 By choosing to describe how this schedule is formatted, it emphasizes the similarities and
differences between this schedule and other schedules.

Section 4: Body Paragraph 3

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #3 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):

Explanation 3 The rhetorical situation such as the location puts into perspective on why the author chose a
schedule as their genre. They are targeting students. Students who are most likely busy and
need a set date and time to work around their schedule. Which is also why TAMIU Rec
Sports post their schedule months in advance.

Section 5: Conclusion

a. Reiterate (1) why the community uses the genre of the written text and (2) how the written text demonstrates
the community’s purpose in using the genre:
Purpose Why: To help participants in structuring their schedules/time management.
How: Classes are organized in columns by their specific day and time.

b. Describe why your insight about the community’s use of the genre / written text is important / significant:
Importance My insight is important because it puts my own rhetorical situation into the context of the
rhetorical situation of my written text. By analyzing the genre conventions of my written
texts, it allows for me to think about the purpose of my text and to gain a deeper
understanding on the participants values and interact with their community.

c. Describe what readers should do with this knowledge:


Implications Readers should gain a deeper understanding on why class schedules are a good medium for
spreading quick information in an organized manner. Readers should also apply this
knowledge to their own daily life when coordinating/event planning.
