ENGL 1301 Genre Analysis Outline Assignment

Instructions: Following the example of Dr. Nelson in the Genre Analysis Outline Demo video, organize your
analysis of the genre and rhetorical situation of your written text. Complete each chart with information from
your genre analysis notes worksheet in order to plot what you need to discuss in each section of your essay.

Section 1: Introduction

a. Identify the community that uses the written text you have analyzed:
Community The community my written text would be TAMIU and different colleges around the area as
how the Boot Camp is held at different college locations. For example. University of El
Paso, and the University of Arlington

b. Identify the written text, its genre, and facts about the context of its production:

Purpose Why: Texas A&M International University uses the flyer to invite Tamiu students using the
conventions of the title,

community purpose):

Explanation 1 The dates and location are located on the right side in a different font and color to be
noticed. The title is on the very top in a different style of text and has a big demographic
“BOOT CAMP” next to it. The information about the in person and online details of the
program are right dead center on the middle of the page with a bold text that says
“IN-PERSON” “ONLINE” to differentiate the differences.

Section 3: Body Paragraph 2

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #2 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):
Point 2 Information about the ONLINE version of the bootcamp

b. Identify the quoted evidence from the written text that supports the above point:
Quoted ● ”Online (8 Weeks): In the first 4 weeks, the Bootcamp will be comprised of lectures,
Evidence 2 assessments, and activity materials. In the last 4 weeks, students will be assigned into
small groups to complete a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
The online Bootcamp does NOT offer stipends, but you may still be eligible for a
paid internship.”

Explanation 2 It states information about the online version of the bootcamp by stating what will happened
on those 8 weeks, and it talks about the scholarship you are eligible for if you do it.

Section 4: Body Paragraph 3

a. Describe the main point for body paragraph #3 that helps you prove your controlling idea (genre element +
community purpose):
Point 3 The inperson version of the bootcamp

b. Identify the quoted evidence from the written text that supports the above point:
Quoted ● “In-Person (2 Weeks): In the first week, the Bootcamp will be a combination of
Evidence 3 informational lectures and hands-on, practice exercises. In the second week, students will
be divided into small groups to complete a research project under the guidance of a faculty
mentor.”

Explanation 3 It supports it by stating the difference between the online and in person bootcamp, since the
online boot camp is 8 weeks and the inperson is 2 weeks long, it also includes information
about the 1500 dollar scholarship you can get if you do the program.

a. Reiterate (1) why the community uses the genre of the written text and (2) how the written text demonstrates
the community’s purpose in using the genre:
Purpose Why: The flyer invites tamiu students to join a Summer Boot Camp.
How:Using the features and text information on the flyer.

b. Describe why your insight about the community’s use of the genre / written text is important / significant:
Importance Its important to use the flyer because it attracts Tamiu students to convince them to join the
program.

c. Describe what readers should do with this knowledge:


Implications They should consider joining the program.
