Question No.01: A television repairman find that the time spent on
his job has an exponential distribution with a mean of 45 minutes. If
he repairs the sets in the order in which they came in, and if the
arrival of sets follows M/M/1/∞ queueing system, average rate is 5
per 4 hour day. Find
I. Expected number of TV sets in the system.
II. Average time TV sets has to wait before begin being served.
III. Average queue length.

Ans:

Question No. 02: Trucks at a platform weigh-bridge arrive
according to Poison Distribution. The time required to weigh the truck
follows an exponential distribution. The mean arrival rate is 15 trucks
per day and the mean service rate is 20 trucks per day. It follows the
M/M/1/∞ model. Determine the following:
 What is the probability that no trucks are in the system?
 Find average number trucks waiting for service.
Ans:
Here, mean service rate, µ = 20 trucks per day
Mean arrival rate, 𝜆 = 15 trucks per day
 The probability that no trucks are in the system:
Probability that there is no truck in the system is
𝜆
𝑃0 = 1 - = 0.25 = 25%

 Average number trucks waiting for service:
𝜆2
𝐿𝑞 =
𝜇(𝜇−𝜆)
= 2.25 trucks or 2 trucks (approx.)

Question no. 03: Let there be a automobile inspection situation

with three inspection stalls. Assume that cars wait in a way when stall
become vacant, the car at the head of the line pulls up to it. The
situation can accommodate almost seven cars at one time. The arrival
pattern is poisson with a mean of 1 car every minute during the peak
hour. The service time is exponential with a mean of 6 minutes. It
followa M/M/S : N/∞ model.
 What is the expected number of customers in the queue?
 Find the average number of customers in the system during peak
hour.

Question No. 04: A super-shop has two sales girl at sales
corner. If the service time for each customer is exponential with a
mean of 4 minutes and the people arrive at the poisson fashion at
the rate of 10 an hour, then calculate the, (This model follows
M/M/S:∞/∞ Model)

Question no. 05: Consider a single server queuing system with

poisson inputs and exponential service times. Suppose the mean
arrival rate is 3 calling units per hour, the expected service time is
0.25 hour and the maximum permissible calling units in the system is
2. It follows M/M/1:N/∞ Model.
 Derive the steady-state probability distribution of the no. of
calling units in the system.
 Calculate the expected number of customers in the system.

Ans:
N=2
𝜆 = 3 units per hour
𝜇 = 1/0.25 = 4 units per hour

 The steady-state probability distribution of the no. of calling

units in the system.:
For n customer:
1−𝜌
𝑃𝑛 = 𝜌𝑛
1−𝜌𝑁+1
= 0.43*0.75𝑛
For no customer:

1−𝜌
𝑃0 = = = 0.431
1−𝜌𝑁+1

 The expected number of customers in the system:

𝐿𝑠 = ∑𝑁 2 𝑛 2
1 𝑛𝑃𝑛 = ∑1 𝑛(0.43)0.75 = 0.43 [0.75 + 2*(0.75 )]
= 0.80
