LOVE AND LOYALTY
Students might focus on the way in which works explore the beliefs and values nurtured in

In Chapter 1, Nick Carraway introduces the reader to Jay Gatsby, his mysterious neighbor.
Gatsby is a wealthy man who throws lavish parties, but he is also a very lonely man.
Love:
Tom Buchanan is introduced as having an extramarital affair, which immediately sets the tone
for the lack of love and fidelity in his marriage to Daisy Buchanan.
Daisy's longing for love and happiness is evident when she tells Nick Carraway about her
hopes for her daughter to be a "beautiful little fool." This suggests her desire for a carefree
and love-filled life for her child.
Loyalty:
Nick Carraway, the narrator, demonstrates loyalty to his cousin Daisy by agreeing to have
dinner with her and Tom, despite his reservations about Tom's behavior.
Tom's loyalty to his own desires is evident, as he shows no remorse for his affair and is
unapologetically self-centered.

of Daisy's life with Tom. Daisy is torn between her love for Gatsby and her loyalty to her
husband. In the end, she chooses to stay with Tom, but she is forever haunted by her love for
Gatsby.
