TAMIYA 1:35 BRITISH INFANTRY TANK MK.III VALENTINE MK.II/IV (CONVERTED) l KIT NO.35352

I
recently decided to make
a WW2 British Army
'Bishop' self-propelled
gun combining the
chassis from Tamiya's 1:35
Valentine Mk.II and the
turret from the Dragon/
VM Model Bishop kit. The
panels of the turret did
not fit very well, so I had
to file and carve the edges
until they came together
properly. I fitted items from
a MiniArt stowage set to the
track-guards because I really
liked the uneven shapes,
applying epoxy putty because
there are some areas without
wrinkles, due to moulding
reasons. The sandbags were
formed from putty. We can see clearly where the Tamiya Valentine ends (sand-coloured parts) and VM's turret (grey) begins!

PAINTING THE BISHOP

parts of the hull and Mr

surfaces. This was followed
by the base colour of Tamiya

which was subsequently
masked up and the patches
of camouflage colour then
created using Tamiya LP-73
Khaki for the camouflage.
The highlights were made
with lightened versions of
the main colours and applied
on the high points of the
model via airbrush. I always
pay close attention to the
highlighting when painting
an armour model.
Since it was an old kit, the
decals were old and cracked,
so I applied a layer of matt
acrylic clear varnish and
once dry, I was able to use
it with confidence, assisted
by Tamiya's Decal softener.
This time, the weathering

TAMIYA 1:35 BRITISH INFANTRY TANK MK.III VALENTINE MK.II/IV (CONVERTED) l KIT NO.35352

A little Bishop history...

The rapidly moving warfare of the North African Campaign
led to a need for a self-propelled artillery vehicle armed
with something powerful. In the month of June of 1941,
the development of a suitable vehicle was entrusted to
the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company,
established in 1854 and located in Smethwick, UK.
The design was based on the Valentine Mk.II hull, with a large,
boxy 'turret' housing the Ordnance QF 25-pounder gun, the
standard British field howitzer of the war. The turret was
fixed and unable to traverse, so the whole vehicle had to be
aimed at the target, then fine-tuned with the small traverse
of eight degrees within the gun's mount.
The prototype was ready for trials by August 1941 and 100
examples were ordered by November. The resulting vehicle
was given the full title of 'Ordnance QF 25-Pdr on Carrier
Valentine 25-Pdr Mk.I', or 'Bishop' for short, as its appearance
was said to resemble a bishop's 'mitre' headwear.
The Bishop retained the AEC A190 six-cylinder diesel engine
(as was standard in the Valentine Mk.II) whose output was a
mere 131hp. With the increased weight of the turret, it had
a top speed of just 15mph (24km/h) on-road. Gun elevation
was only fifteen-degrees with a five-degree depression,
reducing the range to about 6,400 yards (5,900m), half
that of the stand-alone howitzer's range. 149 Bishops
were produced between 1942 to 1943, fazed out with the
introduction of the superior American M7 105mm 'Priest',
based on the Sherman hull. l

GHOST STORIE
Marc Guerrero builds Zoukei Mura's
impressive 1:48 F-4E Phantom II
'straight from the box' (well, nearly)

T
he logical continuation of the previous versions, the
F-4E version offered by Zoukei Mura is of the same
high quality; very clean and flaw-free mouldings,
excellent fit of parts and fine detailing. You will
now be able to make a whole series of Phantom IIs in
1:48. The assembly of our review model was 'out-of-
the-box' except for the addition of a pair of harnesses
from Eduard. The model that does not have any major
defects. The only tricky point concerns the fuselage
spine that which needs to be fitted with great precision.
It would have been nice if the manufacturer had
included the harnesses in photo-etched metal
so that the kit could stand on its own,
but this is a minor point. I was
very pleasantly surprised
by the excellent fit of
parts that make up
this kit; highly
recommended! l

The level of detail is very good and

neat paint job will highlight the
side consoles. The dashboards are
trimmed with decals. In the end,
and with a little care, the whole
cockpit is very convincing

The design of the model is very cleverly done.

The air intake veins are deep and fit perfectly

The nozzles are painted before gluing the parts that

make them up. XF-69 NATO Black was used and a
coat of Alclad 2 Pale Gold was applied to represent
the heated metal sheets. These fit without problems
thanks to lugs that give the perfect position

The fuselage parts are brought together. The spine was fitted but it left a
small, unsightly joint so it was filled with Mr Surfacer 500. To avoid too
much overflow, some masking tape was used to form a boundary. Once
dry, the putty was sanded with fine sandpaper (8,000). The fuselage did
not suffer from any other defects or fitting problems

Assembly

necessary,

Before gluing the top surfaces which fit perfectly, don't forget to drill the anchoring points for the
future loads and tanks. Once this was done, the wings were cemented to the fuselage. Zoukei
Mura did a great job at this stage because the assembly is carried out with ease and perfection

The air inlets have ejector-pin marks that must be removed. Deluxe Materials
Acrylic Putty was applied and then carefully sanded

The wing tips with a very positive dihedral are glued. Once again,
tenons are present for an easy and symmetrical installation

The Phantom is impressive in 1:48. For more

Zoukei Mura gives us the choice in the realism, the pitot tube was replaced with a
positioning of the stabilisers. Three section of syringe tube
positions are offered thanks to three
distinct pins; raised, neutral or negative

18 August 2022 TMMI 322

The painting started with the underside; a first coat of dark grey was sprayed. Using a thinned-out ScotchBright sponge pad XF-69 NATO Black was
applied, the airflow of the airbrush passing through the sponge. The whole underside was treated in the same way. A thin layer of Sky Grey – diluted to
80% – was then applied in two phases until the desired result was obtained

For the upper surfaces, the painting was done freehand for the
camouflage, following the scheme provided with the kit. The shading
was achieved using lightened mixes. White over-sprays were applied to
the darker areas of the camouflage; the camouflage colours would be
applied over them. A coat of Tamiya X-22 Clear gloss varnish was used
to temporarily finish this phase

The nozzle outlets were masked off then painted only with Alclad 2 paints. A first coat of High Speed

Mini Review...
Hobbyboss’s new and impressive 1:48 CH-47A Chinook helicopter kit receives
EDUARD 1:48 LÖÖK+ CH-47A CHINOOK some very useful goodies in this recently released ‘Löök+’ pack. In the box you’ll

a photo-etched fret carrying harnesses for the pilots’ seats.

20 August 2022 TMMI 322

For more realism, it was decided to replace the plastic undercarriage cylinder with a section of syringe needle. First, the piston-rod was cut off and
the body of the piston drilled out with a micro-drill. Then steel needle was cut to the right length with a photo-etched saw from ASK model. The anchor
point from the piston-rod was retained, then glued with cyanoacrylate glue

We can see in this photo, the increase in

realism the reworked piston brings. There
is no need to paint the metal rod which
remains in stainless steel. At this stage the
main wheels have been sanded to give the
illusion of the weight of the aircraft; the
same was done to the main gear wheels

The author chose to install only the most

basic ordnance in order not to overload the
model. First the ventral missiles were first
installed, then come the fuel tanks which
had been previously painted and patinated.
The pylons were also fitted at this stage,
finishing the assembly of this superb model

To paint the wheels, the author use a plastic circle stencil. One must place the wheels already painted in
black on a foam base. The tool was then applied, choosing the right diameter of the circle to correspond
exactly to the rim. Then the white colour was simply sprayed on the rim; the result is perfect

POLISHING THE BODY

AND FINAL ASSEMBLY
At this point the body had been left
to cure for well over a week and was
ready to be flatted back and polished.
I used various grits of Micro Mesh
plus the UMP Polishing System. I
then had to mask the body to paint the
black window rubbers and door seals;
a tedious task but worth the effort.
The glass was painted using LP-5 and
the window masks and then installed.
It was then a case of fitting the final
parts like the lights, mirrors, door
handles, plates and roof. The body was
then carefully clicked into place and
that saw the model complete. A lovely

I add that small caveat
into the chat at this point,

EDUARD, CZECH REPUBLIC
www.eduard.com www.creativemodels.co.uk
This month we have an interesting new product
line from Eduard named ‘Eddie The Riveter’. It
takes the form of surface-detail decals, with the
first set aimed a specific kit; Zvezda's 1:48 Mi-24
Hind helicopter. Upon its release, this otherwise
excellent model was somewhat marred by the
complete lack of rivets on its airframe, making
it look too 'smooth'. In 1:72 this wouldn't have
been such an issue but in 1:48 the rivets' absence
was very noticeable. To remedy this, Eduard have
created a three-sheet pack of decals carrying
thousands of tiny, raised rivets arranged in the
correct patterns for the Hind's exterior. They
are printed section-by-section with a clear guide
showing where they must be positioned and in
images from Eduard (right) they look extremely
convincing. It will be best to apply them over a
layer of primer or paint – ideally gloss – so the
waterslide decals have a chance to cling on. Once
dry, normal model paints can then be applied over
them. A very exciting development and we hope
the range expands to include other aircraft kits
that come ‘rivet-free’ from the box.
Last issue we took a look at Eduard's new cockpit
set for Tamiya's F-14A Tomcat ‘late’ (the one
with a carrier-deck sheet and figure) and this
month we have an expanded set that includes
this cockpit plus engine nozzles, wheels/tyres
and 'remove before flight' tags too; an excellent
way to further enhance Tamiya's fantastic kit
(opposite page, top). Also arrived this month are
wheel upgrades for Tamiya’s Beaufighter 1:48
Mk.VI and Great Wall Hobby’s 1:48 F-15A/B Eagle
(opposite page, middle). Revell's recently released
1:48 SR-71A receives a pair of two, much-
needed pilots seats that will greatly enhance the
Blackbird's cockpit (opposite page, bottom). More

These are solvent cements for plastic models, with the glue evaporating after fixing
the parts together, and leaving no residue at all. The consistency is like water, and
therefore it flows between parts being joined. As with other similar solvents (eg.
MEK-based cements), it can be difficult to see where the glue has been placed, and
whether enough is present. These new products from AMMO have a dye added
– blue or red – which allows the modeller to see where the solvent has reached.
This is not just a gimmick, and turns out to be very useful at times. The only thing
to watch is where the model is covered with a thin layer of pale-coloured paint and
potentially the glue may show up through the paint layer. However, for the majority
of models, this coloured solvent cement will be a great benefit. The bottles contain
30ml of the cement, and are fitted with a long fine brush, allowing exact application
to fine parts. Overall, this has the potential to be a very useful product.

EURODECALS, UK
www.fantasyprintshop.co.uk
The waterslide decals that come with the majority of model kits use a layer of transparent
varnish over the designs to hold the fragile ink together during application; it's a tried-and-
tested process that works extremely well. But there is always room for improvement with
any production method and here, Fantasy Printshop of Cornwall, UK have created a new
type of decal that uses no varnish 'carrier film' at all, with the markings printed directly
on the glue-faced backing paper. Care must still be taken when handling them, as with any
decal, but these offer that holy grail of modelling effects, the 'painted-on' look. It’s a very
interesting development and we shall be giving them a try over the coming months.

MINIBASE, CHINA
www.minibase-hobby.com
The Su-27K Sea Flanker and Su-33 Flanker D are the Soviet/Russian Navy versions
2002
of the air force Flanker and both were released in 1:48 kit-form by Minibase to
much acclaim (we will bring you full-builds in time). As upgrades for their own
models, Minibase have also created sets of new undercarriage legs, produced
using 3D-printing technology and as you can see from the accompanying photos,
the results are quite simply breathtaking. The packs provide main and nose-legs,
all printed as single parts with the hydraulic lines formed integrally. As with most
complex 3D-print items, significant numbers of support structures will need to be
trimmed away, a task that must be carried out with great care to avoid damaging the
detail. Also included in each set is a pair of engine nozzles with phenomenal, double-
layered detail that will greatly improve the standard kit parts, which were very
good to begin with! These are just better. Absolutely incredible stuff that once again
proves just how uniquely useful this technology can be to scale modellers.

MAGACH 7 & 7GIMEL, IDF PATTON M60 IN IDF SERVICE PART 2

MICHAEL MASS, ADAM O’BRIEN, DESERT EAGLE PUBLISHING
www.aviationbookcentre.com

The American-made M60 Patton tank has an extensive service life

outside the USA, perhaps most notably with the Israeli Defence
Force, or IDF. As they did with most if not all of the hardware they
acquired, the Israelis modified and upgraded their machines to
suit their needs and it is this aspect that makes IDF tanks so
interesting. The Magach (Hebrew: ‫חגמ‬, “battering-ram”) is a
heavily adapted from the base tank, with massive protective
panels of along its flanks and wedge-shaped armour on the
turret. Internally, the tank had all new hydraulic stabilisation
for the main gun and many other technical changes that
squeezed every last drop from the original, late-1950s design. For
the modeller? It almost goes without saying, this book is a dream for anyone
building a model of the Magach 7, with masses of super-clear images throughout. TMMI

U-BOOT IM FOCUS EDITION NO.20

AXEL URBANKE, LUFTFAHRTVERLAGSTART
www.luftfahrtverlag-start.de

Here we have volume twenty in this fascinating series from

Luftfahrtverlag Start of Bad Zwischenahn, Germany. As with
previous editions, this softback production provides a captivating
compilation of wartime photographs, showing U-boats and their
crews going about their business such as restocking provisions
for deployments and cooking dinner in the horrendously
claustrophobic submarine galleys. There is definitely modelling
inspiration in each volume, from weathering ideas to the
relaxed dress codes for the crew. Fantastic. TMMI

DUNKIRK EVACUATION OPERATION DYNAMO – IMAGES OF WAR
JOHN GREHAN & ALEXANDER NICOLL
www.frontline-books.com

The Battle for France in 1940 was fought bravely by servicemen of many nations, but ultimately poor strategic
decisions allowed the German forces to cut the Allied armies in two, and the defeat of the land forces came
with brutal finality. The only real success, if an evacuation can be called as much, was saving the British
BEF and a very large number of French soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk. The French army held the
shrinking perimeter, while the ‘miracle of Dunkirk’ saw the escape of 340,000 troops, of whom 123,000
were French. The deteriorating situation, plus losses of British ships, resulted in some Allied troops being
left on French soil, including one in seven of the BEF. This 166-page softback book provides a clear
and readable account of the events leading up to the evacuation, and then treats each day from 26th
May to 4th June in turn, explaining how the transfer of troops gradually accelerated, particularly when
the smaller vessels got involved. The book is a collection of outstanding photos, some commonly
seen, but others ‘new’ in print. There are many pictures of wrecked ships and downed aircraft, but
the majority of images show the desperate and bedraggled troops, crowded onto boats, and quite
unlike Hollywood movies! There are numerous books on this subject, but this publication gathers all
of the information into a very useful and accessible coverage of this heroic episode. The only thing
missing would be some detailed maps of the area, marking where units, wrecks and structures
were located, but this does not diminish a fabulous resource on the evacuation. CLS

THE EIGHTY-EIGHT, A VISUAL HISTORY OF THE GERMAN 8.8CM FLAK GUNS IN WWII
DAVID DOYLE (2021), EMFOUR PUBLISHING COMPANY Inc.
www.daviddoylebooks.com

First published in 2008, this comprehensive treatment of the famous ‘88’ has been
significantly updated and corrected, to build upon the original book by incorporating
new information and some colour photos of museum guns. The book covers all of
the major weapons, including the Flak 18, Flak 36, Flak 37 and the Flak 41, with a
final coverage of searchlights and rangefinders. The format of the book is softback
landscape, with nearly 100 pages full of excellent photographs showing the sort of
details that modellers need. This book concentrates on the significant differences
between the different versions of the 88, but in amongst the photos there are
excellent pictures of the crew uniforms and styles of emplacements. The great
merit of this book by David Doyle is the collection of the necessary information
into one place, and this is a great reference for modellers and anyone
interested in the development and use of this weapon that terrified tanks and
aircraft in equal measure. CLS

EDITOR'S CHOICE For a bit of fun this month I have chosen Tamiya’s new ‘Swimming Sea Otter’ from the
TAMIYA SWIMMING SEA OTTER Educational Constructional Series’ (No.250). This lovely little kit is based on the huge sea
otter and here, she swims on her back while cracking shells on her tummy! Fabulous fun
www.tamiya.com for the bath! Power is by the ‘Submarine Motor Mini’ which runs on a single ‘AAA’ battery.
