Abstract
K-Pop, which is presumably from the perspective of the world of entertainment,
has implications for the religiosity of its audience. It has been proven that several
acts of fanaticism seen by the fans have resulted in a decrease in the level of faith
and the intensity of their worship. The spread of K-Pop is neatly packed with
visualization based on international standards, so that various demographic layers
-including students in Islamic boarding schools- can access and enjoy it easily.
This type of research uses analytic descriptive type. The data obtained by the
author is obtained from books, articles, journals, internet websites. From this
journal, the author discusses the K-Pop phenomenon as a result of the shift in the
religious values of female students in Islamic boarding schools. Islamic boarding
schools, which are thick with life with Islamic values and teachings, should be
contaminated with the popularity of K-Pop and its culture. The shift that seems
real is not only in the cultural aspect, a significant shift in religiosity is also rife.
Such as the activity of studying religion being distracted by the intensity of
enjoying K-Pop content, delaying prayers because of watching idol concerts, and
learning more about idol history or Korean culture compared to Islamic history,

INTRODUCTION
K-Pop (Korean Pop or Korean Popular Music) is a musical genre
consisting of pop, dance, hip hop, rock, electronic and classical music based on
traditional Korean musical roots originating from South Korea. The K-Pop
phenomenon or what we often hear with the term Korean Wave or in Korean itself
is called Hallyu.1
In other words, the Korean Wave is characterized by the spread of Korean
pop culture in various parts of the world, including Indonesia. Korean culture can
enter Indonesia through media, whether social media such as the internet or print
media such as Korean dramas, band groups, magazines and so on. One of the
Korean cultures that is influencing the world is K-Pop music. Around 2011, K-
Pop has entered a number of Asian and even European countries, including
Indonesia. Initially, in 2002 Korean dramas were introduced in Indonesia via
private television. At that time, one of the most loved Korean dramas was
"EndlesS Love". Not long after, approximately 50 Korean dramas filled the
entertainment industry in the country. The increasing popularity of Korean dramas
makes everything related to Korea very popular in Indonesia, One of them is in
the field of music. This phenomenon is also followed by the rise of Korean

products that we often encounter on television and in shops such as electronics,
clothing, kitchen equipment, food, music, dramas to skincare brands.2
In Indonesia, the K-Pop phenomenon is very influential from teenagers to
adults, including school girls. In general, these students really like Korean drama
shows or what is called Drakor. Apart from the drama performances which
managed to make the students like them, there were also several other factors,
such as Korean music which is currently very rampant with the stunning physique
and perfection of boyband and girlband members and music that makes our days
more lively. There are also other factors that make female students like kpop in
terms of fashion, such as clothes, skincare/cosmetics, and whatever their idols
wear.3With the character of the Indonesian state that is adaptive to foreign
cultures, of course it can lead to two ramifications where Korean fans cultivate a
new culture in a more positive direction or even in a negative direction. K-Pop
itself has now become an idol figure in the eyes of its fans.4
Besides that, K-Pop that was born from non-Islamic circles certainly has a
culture that is different from Islamic teachings which have been taught by schools,
let alone based on Islamic boarding schools, where starting from the curriculum to
the school's teaching system, it follows the rules set by the pesantren. Islamic
boarding schools are famous for their learning systems and life values that are
thick with Islamic teachings, so that students at this school are also called santri.5
This consumption of K-Pop culture occurs in female students at Islamic boarding
schools which influences their religious values. Religious value is a value that
comes from the belief in God that is in a person. Thus religious value is something
that is useful and carried out by humans, in the form of obedient attitudes and
behavior in carrying out the teachings of the religion they adhere to in everyday

life.6 The majority of K-Pop students at this pesantren-based school follow the
development of K-Pop, starting from the style of dress and showing their passion
in public, such as singing the idol's song and even speaking in Korean. Because of
that they feel they have more confidence when they become K-Popers so they feel
that they have a social identity that is different from ordinary female students
(non-K-Popers).
K-Pop culture, which has been rampant in wide circles, is now also very
popular among female students, resulting in the impact of the existence of popular
K-Pop culture, namely the shift in the religiosity of polite students to students who
are crazy about K-Pop culture. However, there are also a number of female
students who can absorb the flow of K-Pop (culture and entertainment born from
non-Islamic circles) without abandoning the values of life and Islamic teachings
which are the benchmark for the religious values of female students in schools
that are in institutions. Islamic education, namely pesantren. K-Pop female
students tend to experience a shift in religious values, they prefer to listen to
Korean music, Korean dramas, music videos, or their idol reality shows. As a
result, they forget their obligations as a student with the religious values of the
pesantren,7
The implications that occur between K-Pop and the religiosity of female
students often have an impact on neglected prayer times. Even though it should
be, female students in Islamic boarding schools are obliged to always maintain
their religiosity in the perspective of faith, Islam, ihsan, knowledge and acts of
worship.8 But if the time for building this faith has been taken up by K-Pop, of
course it can't be justified.
Therefore, here the author wants to examine what are the factors that cause
the religiosity of female students in Islamic boarding schools to shift because they

LITERATURE REVIEW
1. K-Pop (Korean Pop) and Its Development in Indonesia
K-Pop comes from the abbreviation Korean Pop which means popular
music and was born in South Korea with various genres such as pop, dance, hip
hop, rock, ballad and so on. According to Touhami, Al-Haq & Fawwaz: "Korean
pop comes in a magic form of mixed Western-Korean style with unique vibes that
gather impressive voice quality, dramatic videos with stunning graphics and
inspiring lyrics all performed by aesthetic-like artists."9
The term K-Pop is often used to refer to music or songs sung, and dances
performed by South Korean idols such as boy bands, girl bands and solos. K-Pop
idols not only have skills in terms of singing and dancing, but also have stunning
physical and visual appearances. As for K-Pop fans, they are usually called K-
Popers (Korean Pop Lovers). Meanwhile, the idols they like are usually called
biases.10 As time goes by, the number of K-Pop fans in Indonesia is increasing.
The large number of fans gave birth to many fan-clubs or fan communities on
social media according to the idols they are fond of, commonly referred to as
fandom (fan kingdom) or fanbase.11
The development of K-Pop culture in several countries including
Indonesia shows the transformation of foreign culture to other countries. In the
cultural conception, popular culture brought by Korea originates in dimensions
that are embodied in cultural artifacts such as songs, dramas, music, television
programs, food, and language. Whereas in the abstract dimension in the form of
values, norms, beliefs, traditions, meanings, are indirectly contained in these

cultural artifacts.12 Based on the various kinds of positive influences for female
students from K-Pop culture, there are also negative influences, such as, female
students love foreign culture more than local culture. Due to the influx of K-Pop
culture, they prefer to learn K-Pop culture like music, compared to their own
culture. Besides that, they will also be more concerned with K-Pop than other
useful activities.
K-Pop has managed to attract the world's attention, including Indonesia,
thanks to performances that are neatly packaged to present Korean culture. The
stunning appearance of idols in photography and videography is of particular
value to fans. The development of K-Pop music in Indonesia is also inseparable
from the increasing number of boy bands and girl bands that have sprung up
around the world. Like BTS, NCT, TXT, Seventeen, Blackpink, NewJeans,
Twice, and many more. There is even a group called Secret Number, the first
female idol group to have members from Indonesia. There is also a male idol
group that has members from Indonesia named Xodiac. Of course, this has
received great attention from the whole world, especially the people of Indonesia,
so that its popularity is increasing. The K-Pop phenomenon in big cities in
Indonesia can be seen from the many K-Pop groups that come to Indonesia, such
as holding concerts, being invited to shows, meet fans, and become a content
creator. In addition, many radio and television stations in Jakarta and Bandung
play K-Pop songs and hold talent search programs aimed at creating Indonesian
boy bands and girl bands in the Korean style.13
ExistenceKpop idols are currently influencing the preferences of
millennials in a number of ways. Such as the increasingly widespread use of
Korean skincare and make-up products, Korean style, consumption of Korean
food, and others. Their perspective has also changed to be more open minded
towards various aspects of life, to be happier and many have even risen from

depression due to mental illness. They also often insert words in Korean in
everyday life such as annyeong, saranghae, hyung, and hwaiting. In addition, fans
of Korean artists usually establish fanbases or communities spread across various
parts of Indonesia. For example, ARMY Jakarta is a gathering place for BTS (idol
group) fans in Jakarta.14
Along with the popularity of K-Pop in Indonesia, South Korea has
succeeded in dominating various social media platforms and even creating new
favorite trends, especially in the fields of fashion, make-up, culinary, language to
the Korean Way of Life.15 Indonesia, which is now the 4th most populous country
in the world, is home to millions of K-Popers. We can see from its historical track
record, South Korea's marketing strategy in entering the entertainment industry on
television has proven to be effective, especially in Indonesia. The Twitter platform
announced the list of countries that tweeted the most in 2019, Indonesia ranked
3rd after Thailand and South Korea. As for viewing K-Pop videos on the
YouTube platform by country, Indonesia is in 2nd place with a percentage of
9.9%.16 Therefore, it can be said that Indonesia has an important role in the
development of K-Pop globally.
2. Religious Values
Religious value is a combination of two words, namely the word value and
the word religious. According to KBBI Online, the word value has the meaning of
price, intelligence number, quality, characteristics that are important or useful for
humanity, and something that perfects humans according to their nature.17
According to Mulyani, as cited by Qiqi and Rusdiana, the notion of value is
human belief in making choices related to morality to be realized in the form of

behavior or action.18 Meanwhile, the word religious according to KBBI Online is
religious or related to religion.19The basic word of religious is religion which
comes from the English language religion as a form of a noun which means
religion or belief in the existence of a greater power above humans. It can be
interpreted that religion is binding, which regulates the relationship between
humans and their God.20
So that the synthesis of the meaning of "religious values" is the nature or
belief of humans in the existence of God by carrying out the religious teachings
they believe in in everyday life. Humans have beliefs that influence the choices,
ways, and goals of behavior that are carried out. In general, religious values cover
three important aspects, namely faith, worship, and morals.21
3. Islamic Boarding Schools
Schools and Islamic boarding schools are two educational units, each of
which has different advantages. If they go their separate ways, there is potential
and power of education that is wasted. However, if the advantages of the two can
be combined, a comprehensive educational power will be born and has the
potential to produce a generation of superior and characterized nations. Islamic
boarding schools are a model of Islamic education that combines two social
systems, namely Islamic boarding schools and school institutions. Islamic
boarding schools and school education have different social systems and
advantages. Islamic boarding school-based schools aim to create human resources
who have faith and piety while simultaneously mastering science and technology
as a whole. so that they can play a role in the social system. Islamic boarding
schools are one of the social facts that arise because of awareness and ideas from
various parties as well as discussions between institutions, such as: the Ministry of
Religion, the Ministry of National Education, the Center for Educational

In practice, pesantren-based schools can be interpreted as schools that
apply an implementation approach by integrating general education and religious
education into one curriculum. Through this approach, all school subjects and
activities cannot be separated from the framework of Islamic teachings and
values. Meanwhile, in the understanding of Islamic religious knowledge,
pesantren-based schools are enriched by the existence of an Islamic boarding
school curriculum. Islamic boarding school-based schools emphasize the
integration of learning approaches to optimize the cognitive, affective and
psychomotor domains. The implications of this integration require the
development of a rich and varied learning process approach in the learning
process that uses broad and flexible media and learning resources. The learning
method emphasizes the use and stimulation that triggers and stimulates the
optimization of left brain and right brain empowerment. Islamic boarding school-
based schools also combine aqliyah, ruhiyah and jasadiyah education. That is,
efforts to educate students to become children who develop in reason and
intellectual abilities, improve the quality of their faith and piety to Allah SWT and
the realization of virtuous morals.23

RESEARCH METHODS
This study uses a descriptive analytic approach, in which the author
provides a concrete explanation of the k-pop phenomenon as a result of a shift in
the religious values of female students in Islamic boarding schools. The type of
data used by the author in this study is secondary data, namely data obtained from
various sources, such as reference books, articles, journals, internet websites and
so on related to the problem under study.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The K-Pop Domination Factor
The rapid development of K-Pop culture widely and accepted by the world
public has resulted in an extraordinary demand for the Korean nation. K-Pop,
which is the axis of the spread of Korean culture, has received high attention in
the entertainment industry. It has been proven that in the last two decades, K-Pop
has managed to dominate various charts on social media. Several factors are the
reasons why K-Pop has popular selling power in Indonesia, namely:
1) Visual Consuming
It's no wonder that fans are hysterical about their idol's stunning and
impressive appearance. The visualization of the faces of K-Pop idols never
disappoints. The visual context here is evidently not only in the level
presented, but in terms of audiographic and videographic presentation that is
carried is not a quality to be taken lightly. Details from video resolution,
icons, props, clothing styles and all the elements in film/music video
production have been packaged in a totality and orderly manner and have
reached the world entertainment level. In fact, not a few commercialized
music videos use out of the box concepts, unique and stunning. The overall
content that is carried is fairly cool. There is no doubt about the technology
used in audiovisuals.
2) Comforting Content and Quality of Content
Apart from the visual aspects above, one of the factors that becomes a
selling point in K-Pop is quality content. There are songs, music videos,
reality shows, beautifully performed by boy bands or girl bands. The songs
they carry provide various genres and have varied lyrical meanings and have
deep meanings. The choreography in each of their songs has also succeeded
in attracting the tendencies of the fans.
Besides that, their content has a significant psychological impact on
fans. The mood or mood is often mixed with the songs they enjoy. They
poured out all their emotions such as crying, joy and even the stress they
experienced. There are also those who think that K-Pop is a way of healing.
What is the main characteristic of K-Pop in the concept of boy bands
and girl bands is synonymous with interesting and unique dance
choreography as well as music that is ear-catching and addictive to listen to as
well as inspirational song lyrics.24 It has been noted that K-Pop groups have
reached 96 groups with a recapitulation of K-Pop artists totaling more than
300 people. With this large number, K-Pop has provided various kinds of
music genres. K-Pop artists who explore the stage also have a high level of
credibility and professionalism.
3) Global Market Standard
In the K-Pop industry, they are experts in using applications for
meeting fans internationally, such as chatting and waiting for idol updates.
They are also active on social media so they have succeeded in dominating
music charts all over the world. International markets develop along with
developments in science and technology, liberalization, business institutions
and global competition. Even in the entertainment industry, strategies to
conquer domestic and global markets must be conceptualized carefully. In
2016 SM Entertainment developed New Culture Technology which is a
strategy created by SM Entertainment to market its products such as music,
drama, films, games, fashion, and so on to domestic and foreign markets
through technological developments.25 One of SM Entertainment's means of
branding its products is to focus on fanservice, namely the production of
physical albums, digital songs, official merchandise, concerts, product
support, and even official fanclub registration. They also collaborate with
renowned composers and choreographers around the world.26
4) Psychology Impact
The ongoing factor which is also the reason for showing a new
impression of K-Pop, is the motivational impact they get from Korean idols.

If we look at it from a positive perspective, every K-Pop connoisseur
considers Korean music as a means of relieving stress, melting emotions and
enhancing mood. Not a few of them also get motivation from the idol, such as
digging up their biography or watching their daily life through various media
and starting to admire their personality, character, work ethic, performance to
the religiosity of their idol. This becomes an encouragement and stimulus to
continue to remember Allah SWT. when the idol is worshiping.
5) Social Aspect
In this all-digital era, the majority of K-Pop's popularity is through
media, such as the internet (youtube, twitter, Instagram), television and print
media. Where all mass media are now easily accessible to generation Z who
live in this digital age.
As K-Pop lovers or K-Popers with target ages ranging from teenagers
to adults, fans try to influence each other and often exchange information in a
narrow scope such as in social circles, peers or family. The more often the
social intensity is intertwined, the more they try to equate their interests and
preferences in that environment. But along with the advancement of
technology, they have transformed to a wider scope, such as getting to know
other K-Popers from all regions of the world, holding sharing events with
various backgrounds from different countries, jobs, lives and cultures. They
also think that they can be well received by fellow K-Pop fans than in real
life. Even K-Pop's official fandom functions as a group identity,27
Shifts in Religious Values of Students in Islamic Boarding Schools Based on
K-Pop
Worship is basically the business of each human being and his God, which
is based in each individual's heart and of course cannot be seen by the five senses.
Each individual has a different character in terms of worship.
From the data that the authors found from various sources, it states that K-
Pop fans are still often lazy in fulfilling their religious obligations. Such as

postponing prayers when the idol is having a concert with the excuse that he
doesn't want to be left behind by his idol appearance. This is where the most
severe negative things affect a person's worship so that he is willing to postpone
prayer which is the obligation of a Muslim. Not only in the obligation to pray, K-
Pop also influences the habit of reciting the Koran. They enjoy K-Pop content
more than reading the Koran or studying religion. Moreover, they study in
educational institutions that smell of Islamic boarding schools, where life in them
is very thick with the framework of Islamic teachings and values. They also prefer
to study the history of their idols or Korean culture compared to Islamic dating
and also memorize Korean songs more than Islamic songs. In fact, they are more
interested in learning Korean than Arabic. They also realize that K-Pop has an
impact on various things related to Korea, namely in terms of fashion, food,
language and even habits.28
Religious values in each individual certainly have a direct line of
relationship with their God, but the case is different when referring to female
students in Islamic boarding schools. As a student as well as a religious student,
they cannot put aside their religious values instead of just thinking about
absorbing general and religious knowledge without reflecting on it in everyday
life. Based on the current reality, there is an odd phenomenon where a handful of
female students in Islamic boarding schools are displaced by their religiosity due
to external factors, namely K-Pop. From the several indicators presented, the
results of this study indicate that they experience a moderate level of fanaticism in
enjoying K-Pop, but some shifts occur such as the intensity of reading the Qur'an,
praying sunnah,29 As students who become the next generation of the nation are
eroded by Korean culture such as spending hours on marathons of K-Pop content
and fangirling, so they have unknowingly been swallowed up by the domination

of K-Pop. If they have a predominance of interest in other cultures, instead of
liking religious/Islamic songs, always practicing Islamic cultural amaliyah and
increasing their enthusiasm in Islamic scholarship as a religion and object of
work, then their role as Islamic students will not get maximum results.
Apart from that, the shift that has occurred can be seen in those who are
more dominant in exploring the history of Korean artists than our absolute idol as
Muslims, namely, the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Of course this is a risky thing if
they are not actively studying religion. Besides that, their figure as Islamic
students will shift if they continue to ignore religious knowledge which is
replaced by consuming Korean content excessively. In Islamic law itself art has
mubah laws, but it can also become makruh and even unlawful laws if the
mudhorot is large.30 Therefore, if art connoisseurs become complacent and ignore
their obligations as servants of Allah, then of course these artistic activities can
approach the law of being forbidden.
Efforts to Increase Religious Values
There are several ways to increase religiosity, including:

a. Increase zhikr, read sholawat, read the Qur'an and always ask forgiveness
from Allah SWT.
b. Stay away from useless activities, such as watching K-Pop content and the
like.
c. Participate in useful activities at school, for example extracurriculars or
Islamic studies.
d. It is permissible to listen to music within reasonable limits and not to
overdo it, which will disrupt the time of worship and study.
e. Deepen general and religious knowledge, such as school materials, Islamic
dates, and other Islamic arts.
f. Practicing the values of life and Islamic teachings developed in Islamic
boarding schools

CONCLUSION
Nowadays, the phenomenon of K-Pop culture is becoming a trend among
Indonesian people, which in reality has had an impact on the religiosity of its fans,
including female students in Islamic boarding schools. Where the pesantren world
should be very thick with the values of life towards Islamic teachings. Now it has
been mixed with the culture that comes from South Korea, where female students
are very familiar with everything related to K-Pop. Some of the attitudes of
female students as connoisseurs of K-Pop content have shifted from their
competency standards as Islamic students. However, there are some who are able
to absorb the modernity brought by K-Pop without leaving Islamic values.
Basically, if you only enjoy K-Pop content for entertainment in your spare
time without glorifying Korean culture and idols, then you are not included in the
category of high-level fanaticism. Although not absolutely causing excessive
fanaticism, some shifts in religiosity that seem unjustifiable. It should also be
noted that art or K-Pop content, which is just entertainment, has permissible laws
in Islam, but it will shift to makruh and haram laws if it causes a lot of
inconvenience.
In anticipation of a shift in religious values due to the rise of K-Pop
culture, always remember and worship Allah SWT, study and deepen the
knowledge of the Islamic religion which is very broad so that we become Islamic
students who believe and have good morals.
