Nutritional Enhancement of Locally Available Rice and Corn Bran Using Coconut Sap, Lactic Acid

Serum, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae”

The Philippines, particularly Mindanao, is rich in agricultural resources, including rice and corn bran.
However, the increasing cost of animal feeds and the high cost of nutrients in feed have posed significant
challenges to local farmers. This has led to low animal production in terms of chicken meat and eggs,
resulting in a shortage of chicken meat supply in the market¹².

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, as of March 2023, chicken production was estimated at
470.21 thousand metric tons¹. Despite this, the demand for chicken meat and eggs continues to outpace
the supply³. This discrepancy between supply and demand has led to increased prices in poultry
products including meat and eggs.

The project titled "Nutritional Enhancement of Locally Available Rice and Corn Bran Using Coconut Sap,
Lactic Acid Serum, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae" aims to address these issues. By utilizing locally
available resources such as rice and corn bran and enhancing their nutritional content through
fermentation, we can potentially reduce the cost of animal feeds. The use of Coconut Sap, Lactic Acid
Serum, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as fermenting agents can further enhance the nutritional value of
these feeds, leading to improved animal production.

This project not only contributes to alleviating poverty by reducing the cost of animal feeds for local
farmers but also promotes food security by increasing the production of chicken meat and eggs.
Furthermore, by utilizing locally available resources, we are promoting sustainable farming practices that
are beneficial for both the farmers and the environment.

For small and backyard poultry raisers, this project could be a game-changer. By using locally available
materials and natural fermenting agents, they can produce high-quality feed at a lower cost. This could
lead to increased profitability and sustainability of their operations.

This project has the potential to significantly contribute to the agricultural sector in Mindanao and the
Philippines as a whole. It aligns with the country's goals of promoting sustainable farming practices,
alleviating poverty, ensuring food security, and supporting small-scale farmers.
