Who can read the following slides? (pick sa audience)
E : Girl from Nowhere’s Episode 11, titled ‘The Rank’ directed by Chaianan
Soijumpa, written by Tinnapat Banyatpiyapoj, Kongdej Jaturanrasamee and Aticha
Tanthanawigrai. Starring Chicha Amatayakul and Kaimook Apasiri Kittithanon
(IMDb, 2019). ‘The Rank’ sets in an all-girls school that has set up a ranking system
for the most beautiful girls in the school, as it is stated in their mission statement,
“Beauty is everything to a woman.” (Chau, 2019). In this school, there's a top 10
beautiful students. They are provided a very beautiful home and manage to enjoy
a lavish lifestyle, as you might imagine. In addition, their images are updated on a
real-time basis, and thus, if there is even a slight change in their faces, the app will
update almost immediately. Nanno comes to mess around with Ying, a girl who
has been unable to move past being ranked as number ten. Ying is rattled when
Nanno outranks her, and goes to extreme lengths to reclaim her title. The fight for
the top ten places and Shining Star starts to turn into a massacre. All of that, just
to secure their spot in the Top 10.
E : The three main characters from this episode are; Nanno, an established
immortal being, disguised as a young female student who transfers to different
school establishments to expose hypocrisy, pedophilia, and other problems kept
secret within the buildings. Ying a girl who has never progressed beyond her
number 10 spot in the school's elite 10 beauties. And finally, Chompoo, the girl
they never expected to be the Shining Star. Now that you know these three main
beauties, Let’s now call Leanna to explain what feminism is.

L : Let me tell you what is the definition of Feminism. It is a social and political
movement that advocates for the equal rights and opportunities of women. It
seeks to challenge and dismantle gender-based inequalities and discrimination,
aiming for gender equality in all aspects of society. Feminism recognizes and
critiques the power imbalances and systemic oppression that women face, and
works towards creating a more just and inclusive society for all genders. Feminism
also encompasses a range of perspectives and approaches, including
intersectional feminism, which acknowledges and addresses the intersecting
forms of oppression that women from marginalized groups may experience.
L : You might wonder, if Feminism is a social and political movement.. then what is
Feminist Criticism? Let me keep it simple for you. Feminist criticism is a literary
analysis that challenges patriarchal ideologies and power imbalances in literature.
It examines gender roles, stereotypes, and representations of women, highlighting
the experiences of women writers and promoting gender equality.
L : And now, why did we choose it as our approach? As you can see here in the
following slides, This episode explores themes of beauty standards, objectification
of women, and the societal pressure on women to conform to certain ideals of
femininity. This approach highlights how the episode reflects the objectification
and commodification of women's bodies and the harmful effects of beauty
standards on women's self-esteem and well-being. By using a feminist lens, this
aims to critique and challenge these patriarchal norms and shed light on the
issues faced by women in society.
L : Let me show you a clip from this episode that we thought is one of the key
scenes why we chose this approach.
L : This episode shows how society intentionally objectifies women and female
presenting people. The femme fatale archetype is characterized by fatal beauty
and seductiveness. We admire femme fatale because she usually represents
something that society takes away from us, like Nanno. In so many words, the
media tells women that the one power bestows them, in otherwise powerless
state is sexuality and looks. They won’t get taken seriously, because they hardly
ever are, but they still get their way. It’s what makes strictly ornamental so
attractive to some people because they’re told that’s all the power they’re going
to get, like Ying. We need to be that perfect ornament adorning a room at all
times, or else we have failed at a crucial aspect of our “being”.
L : Kindly read this slide altogether. (Remember!)
L : Before we end this discussion, we’d like to give a special quote from one of the
best American memoirist and poet, “EACH TIME A WOMAN STANDS UP FOR
HERSELF SHE STANDS UP FOR
ALL WOMEN”. I am Leanna Eleazar,
E : I am Ericka Rosendo
Together : Thank you for listening!
E : Now that we’ve discuss everything you need to know about this episode, let’s
now have our short quiz.
