TIDAL WRAP

CORROSION PROTECTION FOR MARINE

PILINGS
INTRODUCTION
 TIDAL WRAP is a system that
incorporates a carefully combined
range of products to combat
corrosion in "Splash" or Inter-tidal
zones as well as fully submerged
zones, for the protection of marine
structures.
 The structures in the “Splash and
Inter-tidal” zones that are exposed
to a mixture of air and seawater -
the perfect recipe for a highly
corrosive environment – are
particularly susceptible to corrosion
and decay
INTRODUCTION
 Once the corrosion process starts, it is
accelerated by the presence of strong
currents, waves and tides. Marine
growth and impacts from foreign
elements such as logs and other debris
also reduce the life of the piles.
 Failure to maintain and protect the
structures will result in weakening and
early failure, with increased risk of the
catastrophic loss of personnel,
equipment and other marine assets.
HISTORY
 Evaluation of laboratory tests
and actual long-term field
applications confirm that
Petrolatum Tape applications
combined with the mechanical
protection of outer jackets, are
ideal and convenient solutions
providing long term corrosion
protection for marine pilings.
They are unaffected by Sulfate
Reducing Bacteria (SRB).
THE PROBLEM AND THE
SOLUTION
CORROSION ZONES
 Corrosion and decay on piles is
always significant and varies
according to the location in the
environment
 The most severe corrosion occurs in
the Splash Zone where the rate is
more than double that of the fully-
submerged zones.
 The area above less corrosive,
however, it is subject to high
humidity from the Splash Zone and
will be recommended to protect.
CATHODIC PROTECTION
 In the fully immersed zone, Cathodic
Protection can be used effectively, in
combination with TIDAL WRAP.
Cathodic Protection is not effective in
areas such as the Splash Zone and
above water.
 Cathodic protection can be effective
when used on piling sections buried
under the seabed or completely
submerged.
 NOT IN SPLASH ZONES OR INTER TIDAL.
PAINTS
 There are many types of paints
incorporating toxic chemical mixtures to
combat corrosion in marine environments.
 Epoxies, Polyesters, Polyurethanes, etc.
 Main Disadvantages:
o Almost all will require extreme white-metal
preparation.
o Very Harsh on workers’ skin!
o Very harmful for marine environment.
o Will dry hard and crack, allowing oxygen and
moisture to reach the piling.
PETROLATUM SYSTEMS -
HISTORY
 Over 300,000 square meters have
been installed to date.
 Regular inspections of the protected
structures reveal excellent results
recognizing these systems as the
ideal Splash Zone solution.
ADVANTAGES OF TIDAL WRAP SYSTEM
 An ideal system corrosion control "in situ" must meet the
following requirements:
 Allows easy and fast installation both above and below
water.
 Displaces water from the pile surface during
application.
 Can be applied on surfaces with minimal or no
preparation.
 Seals holes or uneven surfaces - especially porous
concrete.
 Contours easily to any shape of structure.
 Resists displacement and erosion by water currents.
 Waterproof and highly resistant to saponification and
emulsification.
 Resistant to microbiological action - Sulfate Reducing
Bacteria (SRB).
ADVANTAGES OF TIDAL WRAP SYSTEM
(Cont.)

 Resistant to mechanical damage.

 Exhibits proven long life and weather resistance (UV).
 Prevents or minimizes corrosion.
 Environmentally responsible and safe to apply.
 Very low maintenance over the long term.
 2-Year easy access inspection interval.
TIDAL WRAP SYSTEM -
INTRODUCCION
 Tidal Wrap provides protection in PILING
area of splash for structures of steel,
concrete and wood. PETRO TAPE

 The system is ideal for environments

where conditions are too severe for
painting, epoxies and other
conventional forms of protection HD JACKET
systems. Liner 6000

 Tidal Wrap system seals out oxygen SMART

and water, and effectively stops BANDING
corrosion on metal surfaces,
concrete and wood.
THE SYSTEM AND THE
SUB-PRODUCTS
 Petro Primer
 Primer Petrolatum is for application on metal surfaces before
wrapping with Petro Tape Anti corrosion.
THE SYSTEM AND THE SUB-
PRODUCTS
 UW Marine Petro Tape
 Synthetic adhesive fabric impregnated and coated
with a compound of waxes and oils, covered with
neutral Vaseline-based compounds and inert fibres.
THE SYSTEM AND THE SUB-
PRODUCTS
 ENVIRO-JACKET HD 6160
 The ENVIRO-JACKET ® 6160HD
series consists of a Canadian-
made proprietary polyolefin
polymer, fully protected against
degradation by UV rays and
corrosion with a technically
advanced stabilization package.
 Certified for 30 years guarantee.
CHARACTERISTICS AND
ADVANTAGES OF THE
SYSTEM
 Since its first introduction in 1929,
Petrolatum Tapes have established
an enviable and unrivalled asset
protection performance history in a
variety of harsh marine
environments.
 ENVIRO-JACKET 6160 mechanical
protection has also stood the test of
time in the most aggressive
atmospheric and chemical
environments (30 years +).
CHARACTERISTICS AND
ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM
 Piling preparation time is minimum.
 Can be applied under water.
 Over 75 years of history proving protection against
corrosion.
 Resistance to water, salts, alkalis and acids.
 Application on new installations as well as already
corroded.
 Mechanical covers are usually one piece.
 High resistance to impact and tidal impact.
 High capacity UV.
 Environmentally responsible and safe to apply free
maintenance for a long time.
