Topic Selected: What does the research say about advantages and
disadvantages of distance education?
Literature Review:
The biggest advantage of an online course is that your classroom and instructor
(theoretically) are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your only excuse for
missing class is not getting online! Otherwise, everything is available to you. You can get
announcements, access notes, review assignments, take practice quizzes, discuss
questions, chat with fellow students and study any time you want. (Sean Chamberlin,
Fullerton College)
Distance learning system (electronic) is a new approach and solution for institutions that
want to move toward technology to change teaching methods and their environments.
This system makes it possible to achieve modern education methods in an exhaustive and
best way.(Maryam Mirzakhani; Hossein Ashrafzadeh; Azadeh Ashrafzadeh)
It has also been suggested that the benefits of implementing distance education programs
also accrue to students. Accordingly, the primary benefit of distance education may be
that it has the potential to provide access to postsecondary education where otherwise it
might not have been available, due to such constraints as geography, time, job and family
responsibilities, or finances (Sherron and Boettcher 1997).
Online education’s major disadvantages may be listed as: technical challenges, safety,
lack of interaction, lack of cooperation and unpreparedness. Not all students have
accessibility to technology. (Stansfield et al., 2004)
Nargileh (2013) stated that if you are opting for a distance education, then you do not
have to commute in crowded buses or local trains. You need a computer with an internet
connection in your home. Commuting is the most difficult part because you waste a lot of
time, money, and more importantly the energy.
