Topic Selected: What does the research say about advantages and disadvantages of
distance education?
Literature Review:
The education of pupils who are not physically present at a school is known as
distance education. At least 51% of the courses are led, and they are either fully
instructional, partially instructional, or hybrid. The basic definition of the distance learning
is “Distance learning, also called distance education, e-learning, and online learning,
form of education in which the main elements include physical separation of teachers
and students during instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student-
teacher and student-student communication.” (Simonson, 2016).
Distance learning is not a recent concept. In 1858, the University of London became
the first institution to grant degrees through distance learning, followed by Illinois
Wesleyan University in 1874, offering graduate and undergraduate degree programs
through correspondence learning (Fender, 1999).
Manijeh (2019) states that “Distance learning might not be the best choice for every
student seeking to pursue a college degree or university program, but the list of
advantages seems to outweigh the list of disadvantages.”
I'll highlight the top three benefits of distance learning based on various sources.
A key advantage of distance learning is the flexibility to study from any location and at
any time. You can enroll in and graduate from prestigious international schools,
regardless of your nationality (Nagrale, 2013).
According to Bijeesh (2017), remote learning is a cost-effective alternative to on-
campus education, providing a more efficient use of time, especially for students with
