Context and Rationale

Numeracy as defined as an ability to work with and understand numbers. This

skill is not just acquired and needed in schools but also in our daily lives. Numeracy

skills is important in our daily routine where everything that we do involves numbers. It

can help even an elementary school children in calculating not just their activities and

assignment in schools but also in purchasing, counting number of items and even in

handling and saving money.

Results of the Pre-Assessment of the numeracy skills using the Regional Unified

Assessment Test in Grade V shows that out of 84 pupils, 6 or 7% were non-numerates.

This implies those Grade V pupils has a poor mastery of the four basic operations of

numbers.

Given that the pupils are already in Grade V, they are expected to master the

four basic operation of numbers already. They should be able to compute simple

addition and subtraction mentally and can compute multiplication and division in

seconds. Thus, there should be zero non-numerates in this grade level.

Due to the pandemic, pupil-teacher interaction is now limited. The teacher cannot

give first hand learning to the pupils which results to the fluctuating numeracy skills of

the pupils. Pupils must stay in their homes and answer their modules guidance of their

parents or older siblings. Since parents are also busy making a living, pupils don’t have

a full time attention of their parents. Because of these, learning is stagnant. It is very sad

to note that pupils at this grade level have a poor numeracy skills. This may result to low

performance in mathematics in the following years in education. This is a problem that

needs immediate attention and intervention by the teacher, thus, this study.
Action Research Questions

This action research will examine the effectiveness of Math on Bike as a strategy

to improve the numeracy skills among Grade V pupils of Belison Central School enrolled

during the School Year 2021-2022.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the level of numeracy skills of the Grade V pupils before the

intervention?

2. What is the level of numeracy skills of the Grade V pupils after the

intervention?

3. Is there a significant difference in the level of numeracy skills of the Grade V

pupils before and after the intervention?

4. What actions should be undertaken to improve the numeracy skills among

Grade V pupils?

Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

Using Math on Bike to improve the numeracy skills of the pupils, the following

procedures should be followed:

1. The teacher will devised different instructional materials that will be exposed

to the pupils;

2. Using a bicycle or a motorbike, the researcher will carry the instructional

materials to the barangay hall to conduct a limited face-to-face remediation to the pupils;

3. The researcher will expose the pupils to the different instructional materials

suited to learners capability to learn;

4. Pupils will be taught step-by-step until they will master the four basic

operations of numbers; and

5. The pupils will be given a post-assessment;

Action Research Methods

This study will make use of descriptive method of research to find the

effectiveness of Math on Bike as a strategy to improve the numeracy skills of Grade V

pupils.

Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information

The target participants of the study will be 6 Grade V pupils of Belison Central

School who are officially enrolled during the school year 2021-2022.

Data Gathering Methods

To gather the needed data, the researcher will utilize the Regional Unified

Assessment Test developed be the Department of Education-Region VI.

Ethical Issues

Prior to administration of the instrument, permission to conduct the study will be

obtained from the Office of School Principal and Class Advisers of Grade V pupils.

Likewise, prior consent from the parents of Grade V pupils will be secured before the

participants will be permitted to answer the instrument. Permission to conduct the study

will also be secured from the Office of Punong Barangay of Poblacion and the Local

Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) or the Department of Health to ensure that the minimum

health standards will be observed. All data gathered in this study will be treated with

utmost confidentiality and anonymity.

Data Analysis Plan

The data gathered in this study will be analyzed and interpreted using frequency

and percentage as descriptive statistical tools and t-test will be used as inferential

statistical tool. All computations will be done using Microsoft Excel 2016 with 0.05 level

of significance.

bases of their strategies in improving numeracy skills.

Likewise, the findings of this study will be utilized in formulating more strategies

on how to elevate the mathematics education and to provide intervention at the early

stage of education.

Finally, the findings of this study will be presented or disseminated to other

educators and researchers during the annual research forum of the Department of

Education, Division of Antique.
