TIMED TASK: A STRATEGY TO IMPROVE PUPILS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN

FILIPINO

Context and Rationale

Kids often dread bringing report cards home for a signature. By the time students reach

higher education, there is a long list of assessments that define their success. In educational

institutions, that success is measured by academic performance. This is how well a student

meets standards set out by the local government and the institution itself. As career competition

grows stronger in the workplace, the importance of students doing well in school has caught the

attention of parents, legislators and government education departments. In the inverse,

employers are also paying close attention to the education and student performance as well as

they look to hire new graduates. Perfromance in school is evaluated in a number of ways. For

regular grading, students demonstrate their knowledge by taking written and oral tests,

performing presentations, turning in homework and participating in class activities and

discussions. Teachers evaluate in the form of letter or number grades and offer comments to

describe how well a student has done or back up the specific grade that was given. Additionally,

I a written assignment, the teacher may also offer feedback and guidance on improving the

writing. At the state level, students are evaluated by their performance on standardized test

geared toward specific ages and based on a set of achievements students in each age group

are expected to meet. (Bell, 2017)

During the first quarter of the school year 2018-2019, it was found out that 8 out of 35 or

23% Grade IV-Pearl pupils obtained a Satisfactory grades and 27 out of 35 or 77% pupils

obtained a Very Satisfactory grades. It was found out that the pupils who obtained the

Satisfactory grades were those who failed the written output as well as in their performance

task.

As pupils next to EESM class, the grades were just right. But, it would be better if the

grades of the pupils were all very satisfactory since they were already in Grade IV and they
2

were equipped with the skills especially in the subject Filipino. This is now the focus of this study

where it will make use of the timed task in improving the pupils’ performance, whether in written

output or performance task. Using this strategy in the next quarters of the school year may have

an impact in their academic performance in Filipino, thus this study.

Action Research Questions

This action research examined the effectiveness of timed task as a strategy in improving

the academic performance of Grade IV-Pear pupils of Belison Central School during the School

Year 2018-2019.

Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the academic performance of Grade IV-Pearl pupils in Filipino before the

intervention when taken as a whole and when grouped as to sex?

2. What is the academic performance of Grade IV-Pearl pupils in Filipino after the

intervention when taken as a whole and when grouped as to sex?

3. Is there a significant difference in the academic performance of Grade IV-Pearl

pupils in Filipino before and after the intervention?

3. What actions should be undertaken to improve the academic performance of pupils

in Filipino?

Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

To improve the academic performance of the pupils, the following motivational strategies

should be applied:

1. Using a video or a multi-media presentation to be viewed by the pupils;

2. Reading the questions allowed to the pupils;

3. The teacher make used of the bell to time the task of the pupils;

4. The teacher will ring the bell before the task; and
3

5. The teacher will ring the bell when the time is up.

Action Research Methods

This study make used of descriptive method of research to delineate the effectiveness of

the timed task as a strategy in improving academic performance of Grade IV-Pearl pupils.

a. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information

The target participants of the study will be 35 Grade VI-Pearl pupils of Belison Central

School who were officially enrolled during the school year 2018-2019.

b. Data Gathering Methods

To gather the needed data, the academic grades of the Grade IV-Pearl pupils will be

utilized in every quarter.

c. Ethical Issues

Prior to administration of the instrument, permission to conduct the study was obtained

from the Office of School Principal and Class Adviser of Grade IV-Pearl pupils. Likewise, prior

consent from the parents of Grade IV-Pearl was secured before the participants were permitted

to participate in the study. All data gathered in this study was treated with utmost confidentiality

and anonymity.

d. Data Analysis Plan

The data gathered in this study was analyzed and interpreted using mean as descriptive

statistical tool and t-test as inferential statistics.
