From the Editor
Welcome
facebook.com/GoodHomes @goodhomesmag @GoodHomesMag

Summer is well and truly here – and so is the sunshine! I’ve taken my
day-to-day living al fresco, spending more time in my garden, enjoying
early-evening walks in nearby Epping Forest and cheeky trips to the
seaside at the weekends... I’ve even managed to squeeze in a family
holiday – possibly the last with my son before he starts university next
month! So I’m going to use this time to prepare myself emotionally,
Karen but also to put together ideas to redecorate his room (it’s okay, he
doesn’t read the magazine!) As always, we’ve packed this issue with
plenty of inspiration for your next house project – however big or small – and
this month’s shopping pages include the latest buys to add a touch of summer
style to every room. I’m loving the mix of fresh green accessories on p18, and
the global-style boho look is clearly here to stay, with frayed fringing giving
me all the Balearic vibes. So whatever your plans, take full advantage of the
outdoors, and I hope the sun shines wherever you are. Enjoy!

USE YOUR WALLS
If, like many hallways, yours
is on the small side, utilise the
walls when it comes to storage.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL
PIECES
Not everyone has space in their hallway
for a separate shoe rack, seating and
coat stand, so why not invest in an all-in-
one piece that does it all? With shelves
for shoes, a cushioned seat to sit on and
two rows of hooks, this clever storage
unit keeps things stylishly compact.

A my and her husband Drew moved into their

characterful home in Dartford, Kent with
sons Huxley, 9 and Rexon, 3, plus Raven the
Harlequin Great Dane, 11 years ago – the first people to
live in the property after it was converted, having once
been the governor’s quarters of a former Victorian asylum.
‘We lived here for a few years before we had our
Wren kitchen installed,’ explains Amy. ‘We had changed
things around a bit in the process – for example, where
the kitchen is now was originally the lounge area.’ The
decision to swap the two rooms around meant that the
kitchen now has direct access to the garden, which is
perfect for summer entertaining.
An ex-buyer in the fashion industry, Amy has a keen eye
for design, and had a very clear vision of what she wanted.
‘I love interior design in particular, and have an extensive
Pinterest board filled with things that inspire me,’ she says.
Amy’s starting point for the kitchen’s design was the

she was looking for, with the kitchen’s plan then created The couple chose Neff appliances, which included a
with a Wren designer at the Thurrock showroom. Panorama Flex induction 4-zone hob with a sleek inline
design, and behind the hob, a solid-brass splashback
provides a dramatic focal point. ‘I first saw the brass
splashback in a pub, and thought, “I’ll remember that”,’
says Amy. A patina was added to the metal to give it an
antique look, and it provides a perfect bridge between
the traditional space and modern units.
Once Amy and her designer were happy with the
plan, a 3D render was created, giving the couple the
opportunity to make any final tweaks. Having already
laid the herringbone floor, Amy’s husband, who is a
flooring expert, knew people in the trade who were able
to help put the kitchen in when it came to installation.
‘Wren delivered everything exactly as planned, and
provided support on the phone when it was needed.’
The results speak for themselves, and Amy couldn’t
be more thrilled with it. ‘It’s changed the way we live,’ she

WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR OLD BATHROOM?

When we moved in, it was a tiny, dank and cold room at the back of
the kitchen, so we had to go downstairs and through the house to use
the loo at night, which wasn’t much fun! We also just couldn’t see a
way of making it a nice space to unwind in, plus there was no room
for the freestanding bath or walk-in shower that were on my wish list.

HOW DID YOU PLAN TO OVERCOME THIS?

We decided to convert one of the bedrooms to create a spacious family
bathroom, and as the long-term plan is to extend into the loft, we
weren’t worried about losing the room. To save money, we brought the
bathroom suite from our old house, which is in the same street, when
we moved. A good-quality ex-display that only cost £1,500, it made sense
to keep that and replace the one in our old home with Ebay bargains.
