IMPACT OF GOVERNMENT ON SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES IN HOSPITALITY

AMAL SHEKAR KUMAR - 8901475

GLOBAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT, CONESTOGA WATERLOO CAMPUS

MGMT8421: SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT

MAHSHAD AKHOUNDOGHLI

ASSIGNMENT DUE DATE: SEPTEMBER 26, 2023

INTRODUCTION

Natural disasters such as storms and wildfires are taking more resources to

mitigate and control, along with the rise in risks (Government of Canada, 2021, Chapter

5 section, para.2). Tackling climate control requires us to band together against a

common cause just like how it is was with Covid-19(Government of Canada, 2021,

Chapter 5 section, para.3). Since 2015, Canada has invested more than $60 billion

towards climate action which will create many opportunities in different fields ("Budget",

2021, para. 7-9), including hospitality business.

This assignment will focus on two changes in the Canadian Federal Government’s 2021

economic budget that would positively impact sustainability in Canadian hospitality

business.

MAIN BODY

Since 2016, the government has invested $376.4 million to build nearly 600 charging

stations across the country ("Budget", 2021). It also says about how we cannot measure

how much we are consuming responsibly like fossil fuels in liters, this creates a lack of

consistency.

To provide Canadians with an incentive to purchase and drive these Zero-emission

vehicles (ZEV), the Government has proposed $56.1 million over five years to

implement a set of codes and standards for these charging and refueling stations

(Clifford et al., 2021, para. 1). According to my understanding, to incentivize Zero-

emission vehicles the government must provide tax rebates on these vehicles. The
hospitality business has transportation built into its business model, and such rebates

on ZEVs can provide a better alternative that will cut transportation costs by a significant

margin.

Canadian businesses, including the Hospitality industry, use fuel every day ("Budget,"

2021, Para. 1). Various innovators are trying to bring down greenhouse gas emissions

by more than 20 mega tonnes in 2030 and put them on a path towards zero-emission

by 2050 (Government of Canada, 2022, March 29). The budget has put forward 67.2

million starting from 2021-22 to implement clean fuel standard, that will provide new

opportunities for Canada’s biofuel producers ("Budget 2021," 2021, Para. 2). According

to my understanding, the Government must also consider a budget for applying these

cleaner fuels, including low-carbon fuel-compliant equipment, logistics and supply of

cleaner fuels, and sustainability of these fuels.

CONCLUSION

The 2021 Canadian Federal budget introduced various measures to improve

businesses sustainability through yearly plans. Few adjustments can be made to focus

and sustainably develop the hospitality sector. These changes can positively impact

different levels of the hospitality industry and affect various stakeholders.
