Science IV A – Physics: Laboratory 1st Q summary

Prepared by: ikaw

(Note: This summary is based on the experiments we have, and their lab report…)

Experiment 1: The Physics Laboratory Tools and Equipment

Objectives:
1. To identify some common Laboratory tools used in the Physics Laboratory
2. To give the uses of other Laboratory Tools/apparatuses
Tools/Apparatuses
1. Bunsen Burner - type of gas burner; used to heat substances, to combust substances, and
to sterilize objects on high heat

2. Triple Beam Balance - used to measure the mass of an object…

3. Compass – used to navigate directions (i.e., north, south, east & west) by taking
advantage of the earth’s magnetic pull
4. Wire Gauze - provides a stable, heat-resistant surface for containers such as flasks,
beakers, and test tubes, and helps to distribute heat evenly; protect the heat source from
direct contact with the container, which can help to prevent breakage or other damage.

5. …

6. Calorimeter - a small container made of a metal, such as gold or copper, with good
thermal conductivity; used to measures the amount of heat involved in a chemical or
physical process

7. Voltmeter – used to measure the voltage of either Direct Current (DC) or Alternating
Current (AC)

(take note of the “V” in the image, indicating that it is measuring Voltage)
8. Linear Expansion Apparatus - used to predict how much, a certain length of material will
expand or contract when the temperature changes by a certain amount.

9. Spring balance/Newton Meter – is an instrument consisting of a hook attached to the end

of a spring, used for weighing objects;

10. Multimeter - used to measure two or more electrical values—principally voltage (volts),
current (amps) and resistance (ohms). It is a standard diagnostic tool for technicians in
the electrical/electronic industries.

11. Ruler - is an instrument used to measure length; more commonly on centimeter,

millimeter, and inches
12. Inclined Plane – is a simple machine consisting of a sloping surface, used for raising
heavy bodies. The force required to move an object up the incline is less than the weight
being raised, discounting friction

13. Vernier Caliper – used to measure the distance between objects; to measure the
dimensions of an object

14. Calibrated Weights - used to calibrate weighing instruments and ensure accurate
measurements

15. Analog Multimeter – same as a multimeter, but doesn’t need battery required for
measuring voltage and current
16. Pulley – a wheel on an axle; singly or in combination to transmit energy and motion

17. Micrometer/Micrometer screw gauge - are specially designed for the measurement of
very small objects

18. Thermometer - a device used for measuring temperature; can contain Alcohol (dyed red)
or Mercury (silvery-white)

19. Resistor - is an electrical component that limits or regulates the flow of electrical current
in an electronic circuit
20. Hall's Carriage/Hall’s Cart - allow the user and observers to analyze the link between
work and energy; is perfect for physics dynamics experiments and demos

21. Ammeter - an instrument for measuring electric current in amperes.
