EXERCISE: Making and Negotiating an Offer

PART 1: How will you formulate an offer using the information below?

1. 500 pieces of wooden chairs for 50 dollars each/ free delivery within the city of New York, 50
dollars delivery charge if outside New York
2. 50 kilos of prime bacon for 6 dollars a kilo, fifty percent payment given immediately and the
other fifty percent upon delivery
3. 5 HP laptops at 200 dollars each, 10 laptops for 175 dollars each/ free memory upgrade/ free
delivery
4. Evaluate your security needs/ give you a quotation for four outdoor cameras and a monitoring
system/ all for 150 dollars
5. Indian cuisine set meal for 20 dollars per plate for a minimum of 60 guests/ free use of the
function room/ free use of ten parking slots/ 30% discount on the bridal suite for one night

PART 2: What will you say to get a lower price or better payment terms when given an offer like the
ones below?

1. We can offer you this new Honda Astina for 20,000 dollars. It comes with free auto insurance
for one year and free registration at the Land Transportation Office. We will include a free tool
box and a Honda jacket.
2. I have a proposal for you. You can avail of our hotel conference room for free for one day if you
order at least 2,000 dollars worth of food and drinks from any of our hotel restaurants. You can
also use our computers and projectors. We will even give you a 10% on standard hotel rooms.
3. You may want to consider this apartment. It is located very near the main highway and the
subway station. It has one living room, one dining area, a kitchen, one bedroom and a toilet and
bath. The rent per month is 500 dollars and you need to give me one month rent, one month
deposit and 11 post-dated checks. You can move-in in twenty days after you have given me the
checks and signed a contract.

PART 3: Write 2 sentences to accept an offer formally and 2 sentences to accept an offer in a more
casual tone. Write 3 sentences to say that you respectfully reject an offer.
