Engaging with Families

Document three unique ways that you have interacted with the families of the children in your
care.

Date Anecdote
10/13/23 During free play, Kai (ch), Bentley (ch), and their great-uncle Bryce (a) entered
the classroom. I said, “Hi, I am Haley. I am a St. Clair College ECE student, and I
will be here in preschool room 1, Thursday and Fridays until December 5th”.
He and I talked about the twins and some strategies I could try with them.
10/20/23 Upon my arrival, a parent dropoff was leaving so I held the door open for them
and said “Good morning, hope you have a great day!”. He said “Hey, it's you!”
He moved back inside and pointed to my introduction letter. “Good luck in
there, learn lots!” Then proceeded out the door.
10/26/23 Kai (ch) and Bryce (a) arrived during free play. Kai (ch) asked Bryce (a) for help
putting on a sweater. “Kai, why don’t you show us how we put it on for
recess?” I said. Kai put on his sweater independently and asked for help to clip
the zipper. He zipped it up himself. “wow, great job buddy!” Bryce said.
10/26/23 During free play, Albert and his mother arrived. While they were at the
cubbies, I went out and introduced myself. She told me she appreciated all of
the work I have been doing with Albert. She picked up Albert and told him to
have a good day; took him to the classroom door and hugged him before
leaving.

Comments: It has been difficult to interact with families during the time I am at placement. The
majority of the drop-offs occur before my arrival. When I am present, it is difficult to remove
myself from the play area as there are many children present. The toddler and both preschool
classrooms play together until morning snack. I have come in early to try to engage with
families more. These were the interactions I enjoyed the most.
