RESILIENCE

Climate vulnerability-

1. The village on Doddenahalli is under threat of flooding currently as average rainfall is 679.1–
800mm
2. Increasing effects on climate change, with increasing temperatures during summers and
erratic rainfall patterns.

Economic Vulnerability

The men in the community craft their dholaks and live with their families on encroached public land
and women do not engage in domestic activities. On better days, they make around Rs. 1,000, while
most days yield only an income of Rs. 100-200. Since the households are nomadic, moving
depending on their proximity to markets, they also typically settle in areas highly prone to eviction.
The average income of a family of 4-6 people in Dholak community is Rs. 12,000/month.

Effects of climate change and economic vulnerability on the dholak wale community-

1. Poor climate resistance - since the dholak wale community live in tents, also because they
live in eviction prone areas, so they are constantly on the move, their tents consist of
elements that are easy to assemble and disassemble hence leaving them vulnerable to the
heat and floods. Poor Indoor thermal comfort experienced especially in summer months.
Asbestos roofing sheet, which is a heat trapping material, contributes towards increasing the
indoor temperatures. Water leakage, due to the poor installation of asbestos roofing sheets.
2. Displacement- being subject to constant displacement leaves them with inconsistent
incomes as every time they are displaced, their markets, connections and buyers are
changed.
3. Problem of education- children are not able to attend classes regularly due to makeshift
infrastructure and constant displacement.
4. Access to public health- poorly designed water and sanitation systems in addition to high
concentration of people in congested spaces leads to very unhygienic situations. Mosquitoes
become very common, bringing along with it spread of diseases like malaria, dengue and
skin diseases due to lack of proper medical facilities as well.
