Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

Startups are the economy's backbone, and their success is vital to any country's

prosperity. Starting a business, on the other hand, is challenging, and many fail within

the first few years of existence. To compete in today's competitive market,

entrepreneurs must implement effective business practices and strategies that will help

them stand out. In this research paper, we will explore some of the best practices and

strategies that startups can use to achieve success. The researcher will examine how

successful startups have used these practices and strategies to grow their businesses

and gain a competitive edge. The researcher will also look at some of the common

mistakes that startups make and how to avoid them.

Some of the topics in this research include defining food stall practices, knowing

the right strategy, services, pricing, and product development. In today's competitive

business landscape, the effective implementation of business practices and strategies is

crucial for the success and sustainability of startups. Business practices and strategies

encompass a wide range of activities, decisions, and approaches that organizations

adopt to achieve goals, gain a competitive edge, and navigate the challenges of the

market.

However, the path to achievement is fraught with difficulties and uncertainty. To

overcome these obstacles and survive in the market, companies must use successful
4

business practices and strategies that correspond with their aims and objectives. This

research paper seeks to investigate the numerous methods and techniques used by

startups, shedding light on their influence and efficacy. While startups have enormous

potential, their failure rate remains shockingly high. Many businesses fail to make it past

the early phases due to challenges such as insufficient resources, market uncertainty,

and significant rivalry. To address this issue, it is critical to understand the fundamental

components that contribute to startup success or failure. Aspiring entrepreneurs and

industry stakeholders can improve their chances of developing sustainable and

prosperous companies by learning about the business practices and strategies used by

successful startups.

According to John Boitnott (2022), there are five startup practices for business

development. First, you must have specific goals in order to track your success. This

entails outlining what you want your business model to achieve, including revenue

targets, and developing a timetable for achieving those aims. This is especially

important for early-stage businesses or assessing product/market fit, but it's a good

concept at any stage of a startup. Second, identify useful resources. Due to a limited

budget, many businesses choose not to use specific assets. Recognizing which

resources bring the most value to a startup, on the other hand, makes it easier for it to

thrive. While you may already be aware of some resources, such as funding, talent, and

skills, there are others that you should be aware of. Third, know when to pivot; even if

you have the most brilliant business idea ever, you could face too many obstacles to

positive cash flow and growth. If this is the case, it may be time to reassess your

company's aims. Your product failing to connect with your intended audience and an
5

alarming lack of repeat business are both indicators that you should pivot. If your

competitors outperform you in terms of customer acquisition and sales, it's time to

contemplate a pivot. Fourth, consider whether a partner can assist your startup. The

correct partner may be able to offer specific assistance such as labor, expertise,

information, and connections. You can manage a business on your own and do well, but

you won't have the benefits of feedback, responsibility, and enhanced productivity that a

partner brings.

Business strategies, on the other hand, play a vital role in guiding a company's

goals toward excellent success. Business strategy deals with increasing the

competitiveness of a firm's products and services in an area of business or market

segment supplied by the business. The company's products can increase their

performance and generate exceptional outcomes by gaining a competitive position. A

stronger business strategy can also assist businesses in developing new ideas, opening

up prospects for market penetration, and conducting experiments, despite the risk, in

order for them to become market leaders by implementing their long-term aims and

goals (Ida Farida et al., 2022).

The purpose of this research paper, titled " Food Stall Business Practices and

Strategies in Poblacion, Valencia City: A Guide for Startups," is to explore the

significance of business practices and strategies in the context of food stall business. By

examining relevant literature, case studies, and empirical research, this paper aims to

provide insights into the best practices that startups can adopt to improve their chances

of success. By understanding the role of business practices and strategies in startups,

6

entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers can make informed decisions, allocate

resources effectively, and foster an environment conducive to startup growth and

innovation. Prior research has examined various aspects of startup business practices

and strategies. For example, Smith et al. (2018) conducted a study on the impact of

goal-setting on startup performance, while Johnson (2016) explored the role of

partnerships in startup success. However, there is limited research specifically focusing

on the practices and strategies of startup businesses in Poblacion, Valencia City food

stalls. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by examining the unique context of

startup businesses in a food stall setting. Through this research, we hope to contribute

to the existing body of knowledge and provide practical recommendations for startups to

thrive in today's dynamic business environment.

Theoretical Framework

The present research is driven by Clayton M. Christensen's disruptive innovation

theory, first presented in his 1997 book "The Innovator's Dilemma," which has become

one of the most commonly quoted and important theories in innovation and company

strategy.

According to the concept, disruptive innovations, which are frequently simpler

and less expensive than existing products or services, can fundamentally transform the

dynamics of an industry by appealing to new or neglected market segments. One of

Christensen's fundamental observations is that established businesses are frequently

unprepared to respond to disruptive developments because they are focused on

meeting the requirements of their most demanding and profitable consumers. As a

7

result, they may overestimate or miss the potential of disruptive technology or business

strategies. This theory is especially relevant in today's fast-paced business world, as

new technology and business models emerge at an unprecedented rate. Understanding

the principles of disruptive innovation can assist businesses in identifying growth

opportunities and staying ahead of the curve in their particular industries.

The disruptive innovation theory somehow aligns with this research because it

emphasizes the importance of developing innovative business models that can disrupt

established businesses. In the context of this research, food stall owners in Poblacion,

Valencia City can use this principle to develop innovative business models that can

differentiate their businesses from competitors, such as offering catering services or

partnering with other businesses to cross-promote products. By understanding the

principles of disruptive innovation, food stall owners can identify growth opportunities

and stay ahead of the curve in their particular industry.

the food stall business.

Scope and Delimitation

The study narrows its focus to the Poblacion, Valencia City, Bukidnon with the

primary respondents being the owners or sellers. The study aims to explore the

business practices and strategies employed by startup food stalls and their impact on

customers in terms of satisfaction. To address practical constraints, the study plans to

utilize a sample size of approximately 30 owners or sellers in the pilot and 70 in the
12

actual testing. We have included the seller because, if the owners are not present on

that specific day, we will proceed to interview the seller.

Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined conceptually and operationally for a better

understanding of the study:

Food Stall - is a small, temporary structure or booth where food is prepared and sold to

the general public, typically in outdoor settings such as parks, parades, or near

stadiums. It can also refer to a lock-up stall with or without appurtenances, showcases,

or others of a similar kind, whether portable or non-portable. They provide a convenient

and accessible way for people to purchase and enjoy a quick meal or snack.

Small food stall - is a compact and informal eating establishment that is commonly

found in public spaces, streets, markets, or outdoor events. They are typically smaller in

size than traditional restaurants and may have limited seating or no seating at all.

Food kiosk - is a separate structure that may be larger or more permanent than a

traditional food stall and is often found in shopping malls, airports, or other high-traffic

areas. It may offer a wider variety of food and beverage options and can sometimes

include seating or dining areas for customers.

13

Startup - refers to a business in its early phases of operation. Startups are created by

one or more entrepreneurs who desire to create a product or service that they feel will

be in demand.

Business practices - refers to the procedures, actions, regulations, processes, and rules

that the business implements or follows in order to achieve its business objectives. In

layman's terms, these are the standard procedures and processes that a business

employs in its day-to-day operations to achieve success.

Strategies - are the long-term plans and actions that a business takes in order to attain

its goals and objectives.

Age - refers to a person's age at a specific moment in time. It is defined as the period of

time that has passed between the day of the live birth and a particular point in time,

typically the date the data was collected.

Gender - refers to the identities, roles, and behaviors that are socially constructed for

men, women, girls, boys, and people of different gender identities. It affects how

individuals behave and interact, how they see themselves and one another, and how

power and resources are distributed in society.

Course - is a sequence of lessons. All of these classes are in the same field of study.

You will thus enroll in classes meant to help you choose a major. Credits are given to

courses.
14

Customer satisfaction - is the level of fulfillment or enjoyment felt by customers as a

result of a company's business practices and strategies. It assesses how successfully a

company's products, services, and overall customer experience meet or exceed

consumer expectations.

Service - is an important part of all businesses since it directly engages with customers

and helps with sales, brand loyalty, and customer happiness.

Price- is an important part of every business because it has a direct impact on sales,

revenue, and profitability. A cheaper price may attract more buyers, yet a higher price

may indicate high quality and uniqueness.

Food & Safety - refers to the policies and processes that are put in place to ensure that

food is safe to eat and does not harm customers. It entails handling, preparing, and

storing food in such a way that hazardous bacteria, viruses, parasites, and prions do not

proliferate.

Product Development - The process of generating a new product or refining an old one

is known as product development. It entails identifying a market need, creating a

concept, designing and prototyping, testing, and launching the product.

15

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

This section contains a discussion of literature and studies that are related to the

independent and dependent variables. These include citations from different articles,

books, journals, and foreign research relevant to the present study.

16

Age

Age is a complex term that includes social, psychological, and physical aspects

that influence how a person experiences and engages with the environment. The age at

which individuals start food stalls can vary widely. Some people may start their first food

stall at a young age, perhaps in their late teens or early twenties, while others may not

pursue this path until later in life. The food service industry, specifically food stalls, has

the potential to employ individuals of all ages. As people age, their food consumption

patterns may change. For example, some studies have indicated that fast food and food

stall consumption tends to decline with age, as older individuals may be more conscious

of their health and dietary choices.

Moreover, age also has important societal ramifications. Based on a person's

age, society frequently assigns them particular tasks, obligations, privileges, and

restrictions. A person's age affects their ability to get work options, specifically in the

context of food stalls, and their educational chances. It also affects relationships and

social interactions within families and communities.

According to Sanskriti Sanghiis (2022), age is a universal phenomenon. It is a

universal experience that is characteristic of a person's biological and social life, even

though it isn't usually obvious or the sole significant identity marker. Constructive

conceptions of aging, as a feature (n.) and as a process (v.), influence how people

perceive this social reality. These concepts frequently result from, or are sanctioned by,

the law, which organizes society and gives meaning to age.

17

Gender

The social, cultural, and psychological traits that come with being male or female

are all included in the broad and intricate idea of gender. It extends beyond biological

sex, the term used to describe the physical characteristics that separate men and

women. Gender is a set of identities, roles, and expectations that are placed on people

by society according to how they are considered to have sex. These standards may

pertain to one's appearance, conduct, or emotional expression. Gender transcends

biological sex and includes the social expectations that come with being male or female.

It includes identities, responsibilities, and behaviors that are assigned by society based

on perceived sex, but it also recognizes the actuality of non-binary and transgender

people who defy conventional concepts of gender. A thorough definition of gender

acknowledges both its complexity and its impact on people's experiences throughout

society. In the study by Anna Lindqvist et al. (2020), gender is a factor in many

quantitative research findings and demographic presentations in the social sciences.

Although gender is not a binary variable, it is typically represented as a dichotomous

variable with the options woman/man or female/male. Nonetheless, the definition of

gender is rarely presented.

Course

In the academic world, the term "course" is used to describe the educational path

that students travel in an effort to acquire information and skills. More specifically, in the

context of a college education, a course is an organized course of study that a school

offers to promote learning and intellectual growth. A course consists of a sequence of

18

related lessons or modules intended to convey certain subject-matter knowledge. It

gives students the chance to go deeper into their chosen topic of study and acts as a

crucial building block in forming their academic progress. Courses in the arts, sciences,

social sciences, or professional programs are commonly used to categorize courses.

The essence of a course lies in its ability to offer comprehensive instruction through

various mediums like lectures, discussions, practical exercises, and assessments. It

aims to foster critical thinking abilities, enhance analytical skills, and encourage

independent research among students. Moreover, courses often incorporate

collaborative activities that promote teamwork and interpersonal communication. Shar-

In A. Sadjail et al. (2022) stated that for many students, choosing a college course might

be challenging for a variety of reasons. When selecting a course that will lead to a future

professional path, one has to take a lot of factors into consideration. Generally

speaking, students are motivated to choose a course based on their interests, abilities,

or areas of competence.

Service

A service is an intangible good that is both produced and used at the same time.

It is a servant's job or status, work or duty done for another or others, and work done for

a customer. They are at the heart of what a business does to add value to its

consumers and earn income. Services can relate to a wide range of operations in the

business sector, including transportation, communications, repair, maintenance, and

consulting. Services are frequently defined in terms of characteristics such as

19

dependability, responsiveness, and quality. In the study by Kim Leng Khoo (December,

2020), he found that service quality has a considerable beneficial influence on corporate

image and customer satisfaction. Although corporate image has no substantial influence

on revisit intention, it does have a considerable favorable effect on word of mouth.

Furthermore, customer satisfaction has a considerable positive influence on the

likelihood of returning and word of mouth. For the majority of the correlations, the

mediation impact of company image and customer happiness is also found to be

considerable.

Food and Safety

Food and safety refer to routines in the preparation, handling, and storage of

food meant to prevent foodborne illness and injury. From farm to factory to fork, food

products may encounter any number of health hazards during their journey through the

supply chain. Safe food handling practices and procedures are thus implemented at

every stage of the food production life cycle in order to curb these risks and prevent

harm to consumers. As a scientific discipline, food safety draws from a wide range of

academic fields, including chemistry, microbiology, and engineering. These diverse

schools of thought converge to ensure that food processing safety is carried out

wherever food products are sourced, manufactured, prepared, stored, or sold. In this

sense, food safety is a systemic approach to hygiene and accountability that concerns

every aspect of the global food industry. In this perspective, there is a systemic

approach to hygiene and accountability that affects every part of the global food
20

business. According to the most recent OzFoodNet (2010) annual study, Monitoring the

Incidence and Cause of Diseases Potentially Transmitted by Food in Australia, 5.4

million incidents of foodborne disease occur in Australia each year, with many of them

preventable. The total cost of these illnesses is expected to be AUD $1.2 billion. When it

comes to food safety in Australian food industries, the responsibility is totally on the

business in question. It is responsible for ensuring that every food handled and cooked

in the business is safe to eat. Most food businesses are required to employ a trained

Food and Safety Supervisor to assist them in meeting this responsibility.

Pricing

Pricing strategy is an important part of every business because it directly affects

a company's profitability and performance. It is the process or approach that a company

uses to establish the price of its products or services. A well-defined pricing strategy

considers a variety of aspects, including production costs, market demand, competition,

and customer perception. Businesses can use a variety of pricing tactics. Cost-based

pricing is a popular strategy in which the price is decided by adding a markup

percentage to the manufacturing cost. This method covers all costs while maintaining a

reasonable profit margin. Another common pricing method is value-based pricing, which

focuses on pricing based on the perceived worth of a product or service to customers.

This method considers criteria such as brand reputation, quality, and consumer

satisfaction. Furthermore, depending on their market position and aims, organizations

may choose to use penetration pricing or skimming pricing tactics. Penetration pricing
21

entails setting low initial prices in order to swiftly capture market share, whereas

skimming pricing entails setting high initial prices and progressively lowering them over

time. According to Dudu Oritsematosan Faith et al. (2018), pricing strategies differ

significantly among industries, countries, and customers and can be divided into three

categories: pricing based on cost, pricing based on competition, and pricing based on

the value of the customer. Choosing a pricing target and strategy is a critical duty of the

business owner. It is an essential component of the company plan or planning process.

It involves more than just calculating production costs; it also involves adding a markup.

As a result, assigning the pricing of products is a strategic activity, and the price given to

a product or group of products will change. This will have an impact on the way

customers perceive the company's offerings and determine its future purchases.

Product Development

Product development is an essential component of every business. It entails

developing and improving products or services to satisfy changing client wants and

preferences. This process requires careful planning, research, and creation to assure

the end product's market success. Identifying client wants is a critical component of

product development. Businesses must undertake market research to learn what their

customers want and how their preferences are changing. This information can be used

to create new goods or improve existing ones. Businesses might begin developing

concepts for new items or improvements after client needs are identified. This phase

requires creativity and invention to provide unique approaches that will set the company

apart from its competition. Ideas should be evaluated based on their viability,
22

profitability, and compatibility with the broader strategy of the business. Following the

selection of an idea, firms proceed with the creation of the product. Before mass

production begins, this phase allows for testing and refinement. Feedback from potential

clients is crucial at this stage since it helps uncover weaknesses and areas for

improvement. In the study by Geir Ringen et al. (2018), "Product development is a

group effort, or A mechanism used by a business to transform its technology, turning

concepts into a flow of products that suit the demands of customers and the company's

strategic goals". Any process or product development project's goal is to bring an idea

from concept to reality through convergence to a certain product that can solve a market

demand in an innovative way. These definitions place a premium on product

development. It is a group issue at the same time that the output process must satisfy

the customer in manufacturing as well as the corporation in terms of return on

investment.

Customer Satisfaction

In business, customer satisfaction refers to the level of contentment or fulfillment

felt by customers after engaging with a particular business or its products and services.

It is an essential component of any successful business since it directly influences client

loyalty, repeat purchases, and favorable word-of-mouth referrals. Businesses must

focus on meeting or exceeding consumer expectations in order to achieve customer

satisfaction. This entails providing high-quality products or services that meet clients'

wants and desires. Moreover, organizations should try to provide great customer
23

service by being prompt, sensitive, and understanding of their customers' needs.

Customer satisfaction involves more than just achieving fundamental standards; it also

entails providing clients with exceptional experiences. Businesses may achieve this by

customizing dealings with clients, providing specific solutions, and going above and

beyond to meet their unique requirements. Furthermore, excellent communication is

critical to ensuring client happiness. Businesses should aggressively seek feedback

from their clients via surveys or other means in order to better understand their

preferences and areas for development. Businesses can improve customer satisfaction

by listening to their customers' feedback and acting swiftly on it. Based on the study by

Amir Azlan Hamzah et al. (2020), several reviews by previous researchers have stated

that customer satisfaction affects the business, such as satisfied customers buying

more repeat purchases of a product or service. Customers who are satisfied are loyal

because they trust the organization.

24

Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter presents the methods used in the study. It consists of the research

design, research locale, respondents or participants of the research, research

instruments, validity of instruments, data gathering procedure, scoring procedure, and

statistical treatment.

Research Design

This study employs a quantitative research design, utilizing a survey method

through a printed questionnaire to comprehensively explore the significance of business

practices and strategies in the context of food stall business. The research design aims

to provide a broad understanding of the role of business practices and strategies in

startups so entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers can make informed decisions,

allocate resources effectively, and foster an environment conducive to startup growth

and innovation. The printed questionnaire ensures efficient data collection from a large

number of participants, offering convenience and a wider reach. It is designed to

25

capture relevant information related to business practices and strategies in the context

of food stall business, providing a comprehensive overview of the subject matter. As a

descriptive research design, this study seeks to collect detailed and factual information

to accurately describe existing phenomena. By systematically describing the area of

interest, the research aims to shed light on business practices and strategies in the

context of the food stall business. Through this descriptive research design, the study

aims to contribute to the existing knowledge in the field, providing a clear and

comprehensive understanding of the role of business practices and strategies in

startups.

Research Locale

The research will be conducted in Poblacion, Valencia City, Bukidnon. Philippine

College Foundation is a private institution that offers five courses at the tertiary level,

such as a Bachelor of Elementary Education, a Bachelor in Business Administration, a

Bachelor in Criminology, a Bachelor in Office Administration, and a Bachelor in Hotel

Management. Philippine College Foundation (PCF), located in the city of Valencia, is a

reputable private educational institution and a premier academic institution that provides

service-oriented and community-responsive quality programs. An institution that

produces competent professionals with skills, values, and character acceptable to the

local and global community. By conducting the study at this specific school, the

researchers aim to comprehensively assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the

study's objectives and goals within the context of food stalls. The Philippine College

Foundation (PCF) serves as an ideal setting for this research, as it provides an

26

opportunity to explore the business practices and strategies employed by startup food

stalls together with their service, food & safety, pricing, and product development that

may lead to customer satisfaction.

Figure 2 shows the map of Valencia City Hall.

Research Respondents
27

Approximately, there will be 30 owners or sellers that will be part of the pilot

testing and 70 in the actual. If the owner is not present on that specific day, we will

proceed directly with the seller.

Research Instruments

The researcher will utilize a researcher-made interview questionnaire to obtain

the necessary data. The goal of this study is to determine the business practices and

strategies of food stalls in terms of services, food safety, pricing, and product

development that led to customer satisfaction. The instrument consisted of three parts.

The first part focused on the socio-demographic profile of the respondents; the second

part of the survey will only focus on food stall owners and sellers, as they are the ones

who hold accountability for business practices and strategies in regards to the sub-

variable; and the last part will be solely for the customers to determine how satisfied

they are with the business practices and strategies of the food stall owners that operate

in the school.

Validity of the Instrument

The instrument used in this study will be researcher-made. To have it validated,

we will conduct a pilot test with at least 30 owners or sellers to get all the necessary

information.
28

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will ask for permission to conduct the study outside from the

school president of the Philippine College Foundation, and we will wait for approval.

After obtaining approval from the school president, researchers will then

approach food stall owners within Poblacion, Valencia City, to ask for permission to

conduct an interview regarding their practices and strategies that may lead to customer

satisfaction. A well-written letter will be sent to these owners. In this letter, researchers

will explain how their study may impact or involve these food stalls directly or indirectly.

Upon receiving consent from both parties involved, researchers will proceed with

conducting their study. However, before proceeding, it is necessary to obtain feedback

from our program head, to ensure that the study is aligned with the institution's goals

and guidelines.

By following these step-by-step procedures and seeking permission from all

necessary parties involved in the research process, researchers can ensure that this

study is conducted ethically and in compliance with institutional guidelines.
