CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Business is a way for individuals to provide goods and services to consumer

and it produces a profit for themselves. Business plays a major role within the society.

It is creative and competitive activity that continuously contributes to the shaping of

the society. By satisfying the needs and wants people cannot satisfy themselves,

business improve the quality of life for people and create a higher standard of living.

Business organizations come in different types; service, merchandising, and

manufacturing business. There are so many service business such as coffee shop,

catering services, fast food chains, and the popular local eatery called “Carinderia”.

This business is popular for the quick service, low-priced, and wide variety of dishes

presented in casseroles or containers that is suitable to workers, students, and average

income families. Carinderia can also be distinguish as a small eatery, and as Mr.

Glenn Martinez and Anna Martinez (2008), the author of the travel journal “Traveler

on Foot” put it as a direct ancestor of “turo-turo”. It is typically a service business

wherein customers literally point what they want to eat. Carinderia business as human

livelihood has greatly improved, because it can be acquired easily with just a low

capital but it may increase throughout the year.

Despite of urbanization progress, carinderia remains and this will always exist

because it is part of the Filipino culture. Carinderia business have become an integral

part of the Filipinos lifestyle, because of this, it may consider as a good source of

income. The increase of sale represents the good performance of the business.

Maintaining and increasing sale is a challenging part in the business field. Managers

need skillful and creative minds, in or der to achieve the vision of the business.

However, in business, carinderia owners and managers cannot avoid the term

"challenges." Decrease customer demand, decrease sales, and reduced disposable

income are just three of the major challenges faced by the carinderia managers.

Business managers of small carinderias need to use their business strategies to attract

and retain customers, increase revenue, optimize products, and develop a

comprehensive understanding of customer needs in order to grow and sustain their

business.

According to Kourdi (2015), strategy is about understanding where they are

now, where they are heading, and how they will get there. Strategies is a method or

plan chosen to bring about a desired future, such as achievement of a goal or solution

to a problem. Thus, business strategies is a method used by the carinderia managers in

maintaining a good business, as well a guide towards business success.

To be specific, the researchers aim to find out what are the strategies of the

carinderia managers in maintaining a good business. This is an exploration to the

business world. The future findings can help a lot to the people who are intending to

build a carinderia business. This pushed the eagerness of the researchers to pursue the

study.

CHAPTER 2

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore what are the business

strategies of carinderia managers to maintain a good business. This related studies and

literatures will provide an overview of the major topic which is manager’s business

strategy to achieve the vision of the business which is growth and success. The

objective of this literature review is to present valid information and explore what

previous studies have been done in this area.

Review of literature

Strategies are considered "high-level" concepts, the success always lies in the

details of measurable actions and monitoring the metrics. Business owners don't need

to create a long strategic business plan but should instead put their energy toward

understanding the market and the business opportunity so they can develop clarity

about the company direction. Before you can brainstorm about strategies for success,

you need to know what it is you want to accomplish (Leonard, 2018).

As for Hill (2018), business owners are constantly striving to develop

strategies that will increase revenue and allow their companies to operate more

efficiently, bringing in higher profits. They must choose from a wide range of

strategic alternatives while dealing with limited financial and human resources.

Strategy development is a creative process that begins with the business owner having

a vision of what he wants the company to achieve in the next year and over the next

three to five years. Strategies are the actions taken to turn the vision into reality.

6
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Similar to views expressed by Hill (2018), bear in mind that strategy is not

fixed: as the market and competition change, your business and product strategies

have to evolve. It is therefore important that you regularly review the business

strategy, as well as the product strategy—biannual reviews for the former, and

quarterly reviews for the latter, as a rule of thumb. (Roman Pichler, 2018).

In addition, successful businesses are those that have a clear purpose, set goals

aimed at achieving that purpose and established procedures designed to meet those

goals consistently. Good practice business planning will formalize these activities

through regular review of both strategic and financial planning processes in the

business. Strategic planning provides direction for the future of the business by

establishing priorities and allocating resources to achieve the objectives outlined in

the plan. When a business implements a formal process of strategic planning on a

regular basis, business performance is measured and assessed. The process allows for

business owners and managers to allocate resources and implement changed business

practices for improved business performance. Having a strategy in place that focuses

on continual improvement will ensure that the business thrives, but it also means that

many crisis situations that can be the undoing of a business may be identified and

addressed before they have a negative effect on the business (Barned, 2016).

Related studies

The recent study of J. Brown (2018), small businesses contribute to local

economies by bringing growth and innovation to the community in which the business

is established. Small businesses also help stimulate economic growth by providing

employment opportunities to people who may not be employable by larger

7
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela

corporations. Small businesses tend to attract talent who invent new products or

implement new solutions for existing ideas.

According to Miles (2011), the fact that all people need to eat is one of the

main reasons why you should be in the restaurant business. Somehow you can be

assured that the chance of your business to become a failure is smaller and this is

another reason why you should be in a restaurant business. As long as you know what

the people want and what they are looking for, you are going to be just fine. You just

have to be creative and imaginative when it comes to the foods that you are going to

prepare. If you want a lot of people to come to your place, then you need to come up

with something new, unique and delicious. With this, you can surely keep the people

coming to your place.

According to Mealey (2018), small restaurants have many advantages over

larger establishments and national chains. They often require less startup capital for

equipment, maintain less staff, and cost less in terms of ongoing utilities and

maintenance. Even with a small amount of seating, smaller restaurants can still

produce sizable profits.

According to Jenkins (2019), opening a restaurant is a dream for many people.

Independent restaurant owners get to design their own menu, plan the decor and own

their own business, all while working in an industry that they love. Unfortunately, the

independent restaurant business comes with its fair share of problems and restaurant

owners face many challenges. Some challenges experienced by the owners includes

financial, planning, managerial, and competition.

8
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Financial: Many new restaurant owners underestimate the start-up capital they will

need to open and run a new restaurant. New owners need large sums of capital to

cover leasing a building, hiring a new wait and hostess staff, stocking the kitchen and

bar areas and buying furniture and decorations. Most new restaurants do not turn a

good profit for several months or years after opening. Established restaurant owners

can also suffer financially, especially during recessions when they have fewer

customers.

Planning: To be successful, a restaurant needs a good location, a theme or style that

appeals to a broad range of customers and a solid menu. Restaurants must stand out

from the crowd, especially restaurants in urban areas with high competition. Even

established restaurant owners must continually review their menu and theme to ensure

they are giving customers what they want. If customers do not enjoy the food or the

restaurant itself, the owner will start to lose business and good word-of-mouth

advertising.

Managerial: A large part of a restaurant's success depends on the wait, hostess and

bar staff. Restaurant owners must take care to hire the best staff the owner can afford.

The owner must also train the staff well and know how to handle disciplinary

problems. Many restaurants have a high staff turnover rate, which can lead to

scheduling problems and a stressful work environment.

Competition: Restaurants in heavily populated suburban areas or major cities face

heavy competition, especially small, independent restaurants. A restaurant must know

how to market his business, how to bring in new customers and how to develop a

repeat clientele. Large, well-known restaurant chains typically have an easier time

9
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

drawing in customers, and independent restaurant owners have to work hard to

develop their own customer base.

Jose L. Riesco, he owned fine dining family restaurant in Bellevue,

Washington, before expanding his business horizons. He is now works as a full-time

restaurant marketing expert and consultant. His recent study entitled “Restaurant

Marketing Strategies” aims to help business owners to set and reach their vision and

change their mindset from tactical to strategic and help them to improve their sales

and income while reducing their marketing expenses.

Going Back to Basics. Many restaurateurs spend an incredible amount of

money in marketing, trying to fill in their restaurants with customers. However, often

they forget the basics: Their food is just fine and their service could be improved.

Customers are smart, they might go to a restaurant once or twice attracted by a clever

marketing campaign, but everything will be wasted if their experience is less than

stellar. Riesco (2011), recommend restaurant owners and managers to focus on the

essentials. Deliver the best food that you can make at fair prices, have a nice and clean

restaurant, and give an impeccable service. If they do this, customers will love the

restaurant and will become the best marketing and sales force by telling their friends

(in person or via Social Media), leaving great reviews in yelp and other review sites

and coming back for more.

How to get your restaurant noticed. Restaurants need customers to survive.

Whether you’re preparing to open a new establishment, hoping to revitalize business

at an older restaurant, or simply trying to survive difficult economic times, chances

10
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

are you’ve been thinking about ways to get your restaurant noticed. There are many

helpful possibilities revealed in the study of Riesco (2011), such as:

Well-designed Menu Boards. An attractive menu board, with appealing meal

possibilities and easy-to-read descriptions of them, will attract a customer’s attention

quickly. Make a board too confusing, and chances are you’ll lose customers rapidly.

By keeping everything easy and quick to understand, you’ll help customers make fast

decisions, and hopefully encourage them to come back again.

Make days special. Depending on the atmosphere you already have or hope to create

in your restaurant, you could implement a variety of ideas to make certain days of the

week special at your establishment. Perhaps a family discount day is in order, or

you’d prefer offer certain dishes at a better rate on a certain day.

Hire the Right Wait Staff: Wait staff must not only be capable of being good servers,

but it is essential that they have solid sales skills as well. Find servers who are good

listeners, friendly, and able to relate well to customers. Your employees will also need

to be trained in aspects of selling the dishes you offer. Ensure they know the items on

the menu, including how they are prepared, and what ingredients they contain. Allow

your new staff members to taste the menu items you offer.

Customer Loyalty: By implementing the right strategies at your business, you should

be able to draw customers back to your restaurant again and again. The important

thing is paying strong attention to what appears to be working and what isn’t. Keep

your prices as reasonable as possible. Customers are focused on value and having a

11
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

simple, positive experience. The job isn’t always easy, but in the long run, it will be

worthwhile.

Super Client. Every small business has these special customers, you know

who I mean, the regulars who come often to your place and spend nice money. They

love your restaurant and are happy to enjoy a good meal at your place. But these

customers are not just good clients, they are also very powerful influencers and if you

do the right thing, they can become your best sales force.

In addition, learning how to communicate with customers is an important

aspect of making sales, but, communicating isn’t limited to greeting customers as they

come into your business. You need know how to communicate with customers.

Communication allows you to attract and retain customers. Fostering strong

communication skills make it possible for you to promote your brand to future

customers, develop a strong relationship with existing customers, and address

customers concerns (Kappel, 2018).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the research methodology used in conducting this study.

Discussing the respondents of the study, the instrument used to gather data, and the

procedures made to accumulate the data needed. This chapter also shows how the

researchers came to the necessary data for this study, and how these data were

analyzed and interpreted in the easiest way as possible.

Research design

Purposive sampling is used in conducting this research study. The research

design is suitable to reduce a larger population of possible respondents. To ensure the

credibility and accurate response, the researchers set limitations and criteria for

selecting the participants of this current study. This kind of approached will focus on

merely opinions of judgment of selected respondents. And, this suits the researcher’

study aiming to answer the business strategies of carinderia business in maintaining a

good business.

The respondents of the study

The information coming from the respondents will be the foundation of the

study. The researcher think critically and analytically in selecting the participants of

this research study.

The criteria for the selection of the participants for this study were carinderia

managers who operated their business for more than 2 years. The geographic area for

the carindeia business was located at the Proper of Ramon, Isabela.

13

The researchers had chosen a total of 10 respondents using a purposive

sampling. It is a qualitative research data collection procedure in which can be done

through the process of choosing sample members processing or indicating the

characteristics of the target population.

The participants selected would only be able to provide data from their

personal perspectives and experienced.

Instruments for Data Collection

For effective and flawless data collection, the researchers used a questionnaire-

interview as a data gathering instrument. The researcher- made questions were

consists of 6- item excluding the identity of the respondents. The questioners

contained significant questions that help the researchers to answer the problem of the

study.

Furthermore, the instrument used by the researchers was a question-interview.

The interview incorporates instruction that should be followed by the respondents to

save time, and explain the flow of the research question in order to further understand

the meaning of every items. Addition to that, it is important to record the interview for

the researchers to get the detailed answer of the respondents. Also, jotting down notes

will be used as a supporting material in gathering data.

Data Gathering Procedures

The instrument use in gathering the data in this study was the interview-

questions. The researcher has followed the following steps.

1. Getting to know the respondents. The first step is knowing the identity of the

respondents, it is for the researchers to identify if the respondents meet the

criteria given.

2. Making an approval or consent letter. After the finalization of the personal

profile of the respondents, the researchers make an approval letter to the

principal, Dr. Thelma P. Ambatali, as well as to the respondents.

3. Preparing the instruments. After given permission, the researchers will finally

checked all the tools that are needed in conducting the study. It is important to

prepare all the tools before transporting to the respondent’s place.

4. Discussing and explaining the items stated in the questioner. For the interview

to flow smoothly, first the researchers will explain all the stated items in the

questionnaires. Instructing the respondents to use their mother tongue in

answering the given question, it is for them to be comfortable, and

pronouncing words will be clearly cited.

5. Starting the interview. The researchers made the respondents comfortable

enough for them to answer confidently. Expressing their thoughts and feelings

will be consider if it is relevant to the study. The researchers started the

interview by asking first the personal profile of the respondents in relation to

the study. As the interview started the other researchers will carefully take

down notes, to get the detailed answers of the respondents.

6. Analyzing the data collected. Lastly, the researchers will summarize all the

notes that have been written as the interview started. Some researchers will

validate and check the recorded material and analyze every answer of the

respondents. All the significant information gathered were analyzed and

interpreted by the researchers to formulate themes that served as the answer to

the research problem.

Data Analysis Strategy

The data analysis strategy used by the respondents is coding. From the

responses of the respondents in the transcript interview, the researcher analyzes the

testimonies, experiences and perception of carinderia managers in maintaining a good

business. The researcher categorized the related responses and identify the themes that

best describe their answers.

1. Reasons of carinderia managers in choosing carinderia as a type of business.

Cooking is their passion. Evidently, all people succeed happily when their

job is also their passion. In managing a carinderia business is hard and managers

should possess an understandable mind every day. But, even it is hard if this is the

passion of the manager then sooner or later its business will prosper and grow. One of

the respondents said, “I love cooking, and it is my dream when I was still young”. The

secret of a successful work is putting a heart mixed by passion in doing that certain

job.

People need food every day. Food is one of the basic needs of people.

Carinderia is become a hub of many people especially during lunch. Aside from its

18

being accessible, the carinderia offered meals that is affordable and had a taste of

home-cooked meals. The respondents uttered, “Carinderia is a type of business that is

for workers and students, because they have limited time”. The answer stated by the

respondents has replicate the reality of people nowadays. Almost of the respondents

have the same reasons in choosing carinderia as their type of business. It only proves

that carinderia is close to the heart of many people, and it can be a good source of

income.

Debt is being avoided in carinderia business. Ordering meals that will be

served in a few minutes are the common scene in a carinderia business. Enjoying the

fresh cooked meals and afterwards paying the amount of the meal to the cashier or to

the managers and employees. This replicate the answer of one respondents that debt is

being avoided in a carinderia business, well the customers pay as they order or after

they finish their favorite meals.

Carinderia business can be started with small capital. Capital is one of the

major needs in building a carinderia business. Aside from possessing good and

attractive characteristics, the manager will also consider its capital or the investment

that will be used in operating the business. One of the respondents said, "Carinderia

can be started by just a small amount of capital, having 1000 on-hand is enough to

build a carinderia business". Start-up money for different meals and equipment’s

maybe risks but the capital may increase if that business will work continuously.

According to Miles (2011), the fact that all people need to eat is one of the

main reasons why you should be in the restaurant business. Somehow you can be

assured that the chance of your business to become a failure is smaller and this is

19

another reason why you should be in a restaurant business. As long as you know what

Challenging attitude of  “The demanding customer, how to ….handle

 “If you have customers very demanding, and
having a customer drunk, you need to approach

Not enough customers  “Carinderia competition”
 “Konti lang ang pumunta sa stall

2. Common challenges experienced by the carinderia managers

Challenging attitude of customers. Customers have different attitude and it

quite handy dealing the customers attitudes especially when they are drunk and bratty.

The respondents noted, “Demanding customers, ill- tempered customers”, “Having

customers drunk" as the business challenge. You can't really sort or choose customers.

21
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Customers could freely enter your stall and you can't accuse them demanding because

in the first place, it is your job dealing and serving them for they are still your

customers and they still give you profit.

Thinking ways to be patronized. Precisely, thinking a strategies for

customers to visit your business repeatedly is quite hard. Managers must squeeze their

brains for ways, in order to build a bright ideas different from other carinderias in

order to gain customers. A respondent have proven, "Overthinking with the ways in

how to improve our service to the customers, this may help for our business to be

visited repeatedly by our valued customers." It must be really stressful especially

when you don't know the keys on how you would entertain your customers.

Thinking every day menu according to customers taste. Apparently, since

carinderia business is working through cooking viands and the rest and serving it to

customers. Then, thinking of everyday menu would be the biggest problem of the

business. And it would be another challenge for the business to think of a recipe that

would much the taste and satisfaction of the customers. A respondents says, “It’s so

hard to catch the taste of the customers". Whereas it is connected as the other

respondents assert, "Thinking of everyday menu to be serve" definitely you're menu

must be filled with recipes on customers choice and taste. And it would be really hard

thinking of menus that would catch their taste.

Not enough customers. Carinderia business is in demand because it is

needed in everyday life. Since it's in demand, it is chosen by many as type of

business. It results to competition of carinderia to other carinderia business would

cause the customers to choose among all the carinderia stalls. One of the carinderia

22

asserts, "Bihira lang ang bumibili, konti lang ang pumupunta sa stall namin dahil

maramii na ring nagpatayo ng business na kagaya ng sa amin...” The respondents

says it is hard gaining a lot of customers due to the increasing number of carinderia

businesses.

As what Jenkins (2011) says, established restaurant owners can also suffer

financially, especially during recessions when they have fewer customers. In his study

Jenkins also added that, to be successful restaurant it needs a good location, a theme

or style that appeals to a broad range of customers and a solid menu. Restaurants must

stand out from the crowd, especially restaurants in urban areas with high competition.

Even established restaurant owners must continually review their menu and theme to

ensure they are giving customers what they want. If customers do not enjoy the food

or the restaurant itself, the owner will start to lose business and good word-of-mouth

advertising. Jenkins (2011) also states, that restaurants in heavily populated suburban

areas or major cities face heavy competition, especially small, independent

restaurants. A restaurant must know how to market his business, how to bring in new

customers and how to develop a repeat clientele. Large, well-known restaurant chains

typically have an easier time drawing in customers, and independent restaurant

owners have to work hard to develop their own customer base.

Spying menus in some carinderias. Starting a carinderia business is hard and

challenging. Especially when you're business is near to different carinderia that is

built for more than 5 years. They have many customers and their stall is visited

repeatedly. One of the respondents said, “At first I really don’t know what people

want to eat, but when I saw people in some carinderias and I saw what they usually

buy…. I decided to cook also what some carinderias usually served”. This may work

if that same dish has a unique taste and it could be one of the reason of the customer

to visit the stall repeatedly.

Giving promos and discount. From all the data gathered two of the

respondents said, "Giving promos, combo meals, and discount to the customers".

Another respondents says,“I should improve my cooking skill… at yung price is pang-

masa, para bumalik sila ulit”. It means that having promos may help to gain the

customers loyalty. Also improving manager’s cooking skill can help to increase

customers in the carinderia stall. For instance, the customers who had a bad day and

servant served the meal that is ordered a while ago with a surprising drinks that is

free, this is one of the reason for the customer to smile and recommend this carinderia

business to others.

Fight the challenges with your family. Since challenges is inevitable in the

business field the manager may practice those challenges with its family member.

One of the respondents said, “My strategies to overcome the challenges stated

above… is to fight that challenges with my family, we unite for the business to grow

and to serve valued people continuously”. The manager’s family may be one of its

25

greatest weapon for the business success, since family is the foundation and the center

of the business.

Understanding your customer's attitude. Being a carinderia manager much

more than just by ideas. A true manager is someone who possess a unique cocktail of

traits, skills and characteristics that enable them to operate the business successfully.

One of the respondents said, "Don't be unkind to your customer, be sweet to them". It

means that having a good characteristics can be one of the strategies in overcoming

challenges, especially dealing with demanding customers. Another respondents

uttered’ “Approach them nicely and good as I can, to let them feel that my carinderia

is having a good servants, even they are having a bad attitude”. The demanding

customers can turn to a loyal customers after seeing your good traits and attitude.

As what Jenkins (2011) indicate in his study, depending on the atmosphere

you already have or hope to create in your restaurant, you could implement a variety

of ideas to make certain days of the week special at your establishment. Perhaps a

family discount day is in order, or you’d prefer offer certain dishes at a better rate on a

certain day.

Jenkins (2011) also revealed on his study, that every small business has these

special customers, you know who I mean, the regulars who come often to your place

and spend nice money. They love your restaurant and are happy to enjoy a good meal

at your place. But these customers are not just good clients, they are also very

powerful influencers and if you do the right thing, they can become your best sales

force.

4. Strategies in maintaining a good business

Treating and communicating politely with employees and customers.

Effective communication is the key to building and nurturing any relationship. In

business communicating with customers’ effectively can help you to gain their

loyalty. Almost of the respondents said, “For me you treat well your employees so

that in return they will be the one to treat well your customers” “Respect the

customers”. It is important that you develop the best communication skill, because in

this way you as a manager can show to the customers that you understand what they

actually mean instead of what they are simply saying. Also, effective communication

and the way you treat your customer may lead to repeat purchases, positive word-of-

mouth, and referrals.

Construct plan A and plan B. The idea of having the plan b or a back-up plan

is oftentimes viewed as being prepared for the worst case scenario. One of the

respondents said, “If you have plan A is to build a carinderia, there should be plan B

or don’t just sell viands… You can also mix barbeque and pang- himagas just like

halo-halo”. It means that a carinderia manager is thinking about the future of the

business. In business, challenges is inevitable and this challenges may cause your

28

Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela

business to failed or worst it may experience bankruptcy. The plan B is the key or the

solution for the business to continuously served and work for a longer time.

Giving promos and freebies. Most carinderia are adding items or extra food

that is free to their customers. One of the respondents said,“Giving promos to all

students… drivers and all people that their money is on budget”. It is clearly stated

that combo meals or promos is something that you may offer to your customers. It is

done by serving the ordered meals with a soup or drinks and also native delicacies

with the same price of the food they ordered. Within this practices, carinderia

managers may attract new customers and they may gain the loyalty of the regular

customers.

Possessing good and positive characteristics. Service is very important

because no matter how delicious your food is, how beautiful your carinderia looks,

customers are turned off by bad service. One of the respondents stated, “Mingle with

my customers pleasantly ….”. Another said,“Kailangan ng matinding pagsisikap

at ......patience dahil wala namang business na kauumpisa pa lang eh malago na…

ahh... kailangan mo ring magtiwala sa sarili mo at sa Diyos”. As long as you believe

in your goals, you’ll continue to have a positive mindset; that’s the power of

positivity, that’s the power of the Father above.

As what Kappel (2018) revealed on his study, learning how to communicate

with customers is an important aspect of making sales, but, communicating isn’t

limited to greeting customers as they come into your business. You need know how to

communicate with customers. Communication allows you to attract and retain

customers. Fostering strong communication skills make it possible for you to promote

29

your brand to future customers, develop a strong relationship with existing customers,

and address customers concerns.

Jenkins Riesco (2011), also added strategies to improve sales and reduce

marketing expenses. Deliver the best food that you can make at fair prices, have a

nice and clean restaurant, and give an impeccable service. There is not better

restaurant marketing that over-delivering. If you want to spend some marketing

budget, do it by surprising your customers giving them freebies that they don't expect.

As connected to the study of Jenkins (2019), opening a restaurant is a dream

for many people. Independent restaurant owners get to design their own menu, plan

the decor and own their own business, all while working in an industry that they love.

Unfortunately, the independent restaurant business comes with its fair share of

problems and restaurant owners face many challenges. Some challenges experienced

by the owners includes financial, planning, managerial, and competition.

Furthermore, Hill (2018) stated, business owners are constantly striving to

develop strategies that will increase revenue and allow their companies to operate

more efficiently, bringing in higher profits.

2. The common challenges experienced by the respondents are; (a) challenging

attitude of customers, (b) thinking of ways to be patronized, (c) thinking every

menu according to customer’s taste, (d) not enough customers.

3. The strategies used by the carinderia managers in overcoming those challenges

are: (a) Spying in some carinderia, (b) Giving promos and discount, (c) Fight

the challenges with your family, (d) Understanding the customer’s attitude.

4. The strategies in maintaining a good business that obtained in the study are the

following: (a). Treating and communicating politely with your employees and

customers, (b). Construct plan A and plan B, (c) Giving promos and freebies,

(d). Possessing positive characteristics

Conclusions

The following conclusions were derived after gathering the data from the

respondents.

1. Food is one of the basic needs of people, especially those people who are in a

hurry and have no time preparing food for the day. Carinderia work around the

clock wherein they usually serve breakfast food in the morning and hearty

home-cooked meals by noon.

2. The customer attitude is a challenging situation in every business, particularly

to the managers of a business. Dealing with this kind of customers, means

trying to give them quality service despite of their unkind attitude.

3. In dealing with customer’s attitude, managers should always bear in mind that

the customers is the backbone of any business. Managers should provide a

quality service to make the customers satisfied their desires and wants.

35
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

4. Managers should be mindful of every interaction with a customers, including

the customer’s complaints. These interaction need to be positive efficient and

convenient to the customers. Excellent customers’ service helps to generate

customer’s retention and renewals. Also, this strategy can help to maintain a

good business.

Recommendations

Based on the study, various recommendations were attained.

1. Carinderia is a small-scale business that has been made feasible because it has

established target market, the students and employees. This particular

customer segment prefer buying food at a carinderia business because it is

more economical and hassle-free. Inspiring individual must build a carinderia

business near school or a location which is accessible by many people.

2. Running a small business is challenging and quite too hard. The challenge can

be seen as an opportunity that can be utilized in creating and developing a

business. In other words, the managers should positively and creatively deal

with business challenges. As they say, “focus on positive not on negative”.

3. “Treat others the way you should want to be treated”, this is more applicable

in business, especially in dealing with the customers. Managers should take

responsibility to build an engaging and respectful relationship with the

customers. Remember if there is no trust, there may soon be no sales.

4. It goes without saying that people love getting things for free. Managers can

consider this kind of strategy, especially in managing a carinderia business.

Freebies add value to the interaction and give your customers positive feeling

36
RAMON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Oscariz, Ramon, Isabela
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

about your stall. Furthermore, freebies make your stall stand-out from its

competitors and this may contribute to the business success.

5. Carinderia managers must think an excellent gimmick to encourage customers

to visit your stall. Managers may put karaoke machines making it a place

where people can come together and have a good time eating, drinking, and

singing.

6. For the future researchers, add more respondents that will not only represent a

small place rather the whole community and town. Bigger population can add

more valid information about the topic that can contribute to the economic

growth.
