1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 The Problem and Its Background

In today’s generation, people are more practical. They desire to earn money in the

simplest way. Even students aim to earn money while attending to school at the same time. Most

of these students resort to start small-time businesses to be able to earn without compromising

their studies. Although small-time business can help them financially—especially to their

expenses in school—it could be a distraction to their studies as well.

One of the most relevant types of business for these students is the online-selling

business. An online-selling business is a type of business that takes place online with the use of

internet and social media sites. This may be helpful to the students who desire to engage in

small-time businesses without giving much time and attention to it. Online-selling can have major

advantages to the students who practice it. People nowadays prefer scrolling for products online

rather than wasting time and energy strolling around the city to shop. Therefore, online-selling has

a larger customer-base, and it leads to the increase of profit to the student-online-sellers. Also,

this type of business does not require much time and attention because the transactions are

flexible. Therefore, the student-online-sellers do not need to sacrifice their class hours for their

business.

Although online-selling business is extremely beneficial to the students, there can also be

factors that may have a negative impact to their academic performance and behavior as students.

The goal of this study was to determine both the positive and negative impact of online-selling to

the academic performance of the high school students.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to determine the following:

1. How does online-selling affect the academic performance of the high school students?

3
2. Does online-selling distract them from their studies?

3. Can online-selling help them in their studies positively?

1.3 Objectives of the study

1.3.1 General Objective

This study aimed to determine the impact of online-selling to the academic performance

of the high school students in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy.

1.3.2 Specific Objective

Specifically, this study aimed to determine the following:

1. The positive and negative impact of online-selling to the academic performance of high

school students, and what weighs more

2. The impact of online-selling to the time frame and focus of the students

3. The benefits of online-selling that is relevant for the academic performance of the

students.

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study would be a great contribution to the vast knowledge in relation to online-selling

and its impact to the academic performance of the student-online-sellers. The researchers believe

that the result of this study would be beneficial to the following:

High School Students – as the prospective online-sellers, they will be informed about

online-selling and its possible effects to their academic performance.

Parents – they will be informed about the advantages and risks of online-selling.

Therefore, this study will help them decide whether or not to allow their children to engage in this

type of business while they attend to school at the same time.

Researchers – as aspiring entrepreneurs in the future, this study will inspire them to

engage in online-selling in the near future.

4
Respondents – as online-sellers themselves, they will be able to assess whether online

selling does more harm than good to them or the other way around.

Teacher – this research will help them decide whether they should encourage their

students to engage in online selling or not.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The respondents were randomly selected from the high school department of Our Lady of

Perpetual Help Academy. This study investigated the impact of online-selling business to the

academic performance of the respondents. It aimed to discover whether it is safe for the students

to engage in this type of business or not. Also, it determined if online business is appropriate to

the time frame of the students.

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Edmonson (2019) stated that everyone can easily start an online-business as long as

there is a computer or laptop and internet access. This makes it easier for anyone—even busy

students—to engage in this type of business. It doesn’t even require a professional skill. As long

as one have a product to sell and can easily access the internet, one can start immediately.

Aside from the fact that it is easy to start with, Business Queensland (2017) also implied

that online-selling is very flexible because customers can buy products at any time of the day.

This is less hassle for both the sellers and the customers. Transactions are made depending on

the agreement of both sides. Therefore, online-sellers are more relaxed for they can entertain

customers—through social media— no matter where they are or what they are doing. Also,

according to Business Queensland (2017), online-selling allows a business to operate without

necessarily building a physical store. Thus, it does not need a large amount of capital to start this

type of business.

These advantages make online-selling very pleasant for the students who desire to earn

income. According to Jewell, S. (2014), “Students are increasingly taking up opportunities to work

while studying.” Learning about these advantages will surely make the students want to start

online-selling right away. However, the thrill and excitement of engaging in online-selling may

affect the behavior of the students as well their academic performance. The students might

prioritize their business more than their studies. They might prefer spending more time and

attention to their business instead of doing their home works and other school activities.

In Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy, numerous students in the high school

department are engaging themselves in online-selling. This study was conducted to find out the

possible effects of online-selling to their academic performance. The researchers aimed to know

the factors that can change the behavior of these students, as they engage in online-selling,

which can impact their academic performance.

7
3. METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

A descriptive experimental research design was utilized in this study as the

researchers tried to examine how online selling affects students. This study aimed to

precisely describe the impact of engaging in online business to the students, given the

fact that they have to balance their time for their studies and online-selling. This research

design was useful in determining the relationship between online-selling and the

academic performance of the students.

3.2 Sampling

The study was conducted at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy of Linamon,

Kauswagan, Lanao Inc., located at Poblacion, Linamon, Lanao del Norte—particularly the

High School Students. The researchers chose this school because of the easy access to

the students who engage in online-selling.

Eighteen (18) high school students were selected to answer the survey for the

added information of this study. The respondents were given questionnaires for them to

answer.

3.3 Research Instrument

The researchers conducted a study by using questionnaires wherein each of the

questions gets precise answers from the respondents relevant to the study.

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

The gathering of data happened inside the premises of Our Lady of Perpetual

Help Academy of Linamon, Kauswagan, Lanao Inc. where there were several students

who engaged in online-selling. The prepared Survey questionnaire was distributed to the

specific students who were engaged in online-selling business.

5. SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Summary

This study sought to determine the impact of engaging in an online-selling business to the

academic performance of the high school students of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy. The

respondents, who were current and former students of the said school, were given a set of test

through the use of questionnaires to identify both the positive and negative impact of online-

selling to them. The research design used was descriptive experimental.

5.2 Findings

1. Majority of the students who engage in online-selling have been permitted by their

parents/guardians.

2. Most students have been engaging in online-selling for about 2 years now.

3. Students could take 5 hours, at most, in a day in managing their online business.

4. Online-selling barely disturbs the students' time for their studies.

5. Most of the students are capable in balancing their time between their studies and online-

selling.

6. Few students find it hard to do or even remember their homework because they were too busy

with their online-business. That is one of the few of the factors that make online-selling a

distraction for their studies.

7. Online-selling helps the students provide for their financial obligations at school.

12
5.3 Conclusion

The gathered data indicates that, in general, online-selling gives more positive impact to the

academic performance of the students rather than negative ones. Although it might distract them

once in awhile, but overall, it is very helpful in terms of financial matters given the fact that most of

the school projects nowadays require money. Therefore, students must be encouraged to engage

in online-selling.

5.4 Recommendation

The researchers highly recommend that a similar study should be conducted to bigger schools or

universities with larger number of respondents to ensure the accuracy of the study. It is also

recommended that the similar research must be experimental, therefore purposely engaging the

respondents in online-selling to precisely differentiate their academic performance before and

after engaging in online-selling.
