1. INTRODUCTION
In today’s generation, people are more practical. They desire to earn money in the
simplest way. Even students aim to earn money while attending to school at the same time. Most
of these students resort to start small-time businesses to be able to earn without compromising
their studies. Although small-time business can help them financially—especially to their
One of the most relevant types of business for these students is the online-selling
business. An online-selling business is a type of business that takes place online with the use of
internet and social media sites. This may be helpful to the students who desire to engage in
small-time businesses without giving much time and attention to it. Online-selling can have major
advantages to the students who practice it. People nowadays prefer scrolling for products online
rather than wasting time and energy strolling around the city to shop. Therefore, online-selling has
a larger customer-base, and it leads to the increase of profit to the student-online-sellers. Also,
this type of business does not require much time and attention because the transactions are
flexible. Therefore, the student-online-sellers do not need to sacrifice their class hours for their
business.
Although online-selling business is extremely beneficial to the students, there can also be
factors that may have a negative impact to their academic performance and behavior as students.
The goal of this study was to determine both the positive and negative impact of online-selling to

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Edmonson (2019) stated that everyone can easily start an online-business as long as
there is a computer or laptop and internet access. This makes it easier for anyone—even busy
students—to engage in this type of business. It doesn’t even require a professional skill. As long
as one have a product to sell and can easily access the internet, one can start immediately.
Aside from the fact that it is easy to start with, Business Queensland (2017) also implied
that online-selling is very flexible because customers can buy products at any time of the day.
This is less hassle for both the sellers and the customers. Transactions are made depending on
the agreement of both sides. Therefore, online-sellers are more relaxed for they can entertain
customers—through social media— no matter where they are or what they are doing. Also,
necessarily building a physical store. Thus, it does not need a large amount of capital to start this
type of business.
These advantages make online-selling very pleasant for the students who desire to earn
income. According to Jewell, S. (2014), “Students are increasingly taking up opportunities to work
while studying.” Learning about these advantages will surely make the students want to start
online-selling right away. However, the thrill and excitement of engaging in online-selling may
affect the behavior of the students as well their academic performance. The students might
prioritize their business more than their studies. They might prefer spending more time and
attention to their business instead of doing their home works and other school activities.
In Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy, numerous students in the high school
department are engaging themselves in online-selling. This study was conducted to find out the
possible effects of online-selling to their academic performance. The researchers aimed to know
the factors that can change the behavior of these students, as they engage in online-selling,

researchers tried to examine how online selling affects students. This study aimed to
precisely describe the impact of engaging in online business to the students, given the
fact that they have to balance their time for their studies and online-selling. This research

4. PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, INTERPRETATION OF DATA
In this chapter, the statistical results of the study were presented and each has a
corresponding table for every topic/matter at focus. There would also be a discussion regarding
the data that were included.
Table 1.Frequency and percentage of students who engage in online business with their
parents' consent.
Table 1 shows the frequency and percentage of students who engage in online business with
their parents' consent. 94.4% of the total respondents answered Yes. On the other hand, only 1 or
5.6% answered No.
Table 2.Frequency and percentage of how long the students have engaged in online
business.
Table 2 shows the duration of the students’ engagement in online business. The lowest frequency
is 0 who answered7 years and above, followed by 4 or 22.2% who answered 2-6 years, then 5 or
27.8% who answered below 2 months. The highest frequency is 9 or 50% who answered3
months – 2 years.
Table 3. Frequency and percentage of the time spent in managing online business in a day.
Table 3 shows the frequency and percentage of the time that the students spend in managing
their online business in a day. Most of the respondents manage their online business from 1-5

hours with a percentage of 55.56%. While 22.22% of the total respondents manage their online
business for 30-50 minutes and both 20 minutes and 6 hours above got a percentage of 11.11%.
Table 4.Frequency and percentage of the disturbance of online business to the studies of
the students.
Table 4 shows the frequency and percentage of the disturbance of online business to their
studies. 6 or 33.33% of the students agreed that their online business disturbs their time for
studies. The highest frequency is 12 or 66.67% who disagreed that online business is a
disturbance to their studies.
Table 5 shows the frequency and percentage of the students' capability to balance their time
between their studies and online business. 17 or 94.4% of the respondents agreed that it is
manageable for them to balance their time in online business and studies, while only 1 or 5.6%
disagreed.
Table 6. Frequency and percentage of instances that online business affected the
students’ studies negatively.
Table 6 shows the frequency and percentage if there were instances that the online business has
affected their studies in a negative way. 3 or 16.67% of the respondents answered Yes (or agreed
that there were instances that online business affected their studies negatively), and 15 or
83.33% answered No. Those who have agreed that there were instances that online business
affected their studies stated that it made them have a hard time in doing their assignments.
Worse, they often forget to do their homework.

Table7. Frequency and percentage of instances that online business affected the students’
studies positively.
Table 7 shows the frequency and percentage if there were instances that online business affected
their studies positively. 14 or 77.78% of the respondents answered Yes (or agreed that there were
instances that online business affected their studies positively), and 4 or 22.22% answered No.
Those who have answered Yes stated that online business helps them sustain their financial
obligations in school.
Table 8.Frequency and percentage if online business helps in the financial obligations of
the students in school.
Table 8 shows the frequency and percentage if online business helps in the financial obligations
of students in school. 15 or 83.33% agreed, while 3 or 16.67% disagreed.

5. SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Summary
This study sought to determine the impact of engaging in an online-selling business to the
academic performance of the high school students of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Academy. The
respondents, who were current and former students of the said school, were given a set of test
through the use of questionnaires to identify both the positive and negative impact of online-
5.2 Findings
1. Majority of the students who engage in online-selling have been permitted by their
parents/guardians.
2. Most students have been engaging in online-selling for about 2 years now.
3. Students could take 5 hours, at most, in a day in managing their online business.
5. Most of the students are capable in balancing their time between their studies and online-
selling.
6. Few students find it hard to do or even remember their homework because they were too busy
with their online-business. That is one of the few of the factors that make online-selling a
7. Online-selling helps the students provide for their financial obligations at school.
12
5.3 Conclusion
The gathered data indicates that, in general, online-selling gives more positive impact to the
academic performance of the students rather than negative ones. Although it might distract them
once in awhile, but overall, it is very helpful in terms of financial matters given the fact that most of
the school projects nowadays require money. Therefore, students must be encouraged to engage
in online-selling.
5.4 Recommendation
The researchers highly recommend that a similar study should be conducted to bigger schools or
universities with larger number of respondents to ensure the accuracy of the study. It is also
recommended that the similar research must be experimental, therefore purposely engaging the
