INSIDEOUT COACHING

THREE REALITIES OF
A CULTURE OF BELONGING

ISO-C GAME PLAN

Transformational coaching and a culture of belonging are built on and empowered by secure relationships,
where every student-athlete is seen, safe and supported. Secure relationships, both coach to student-
athlete, student-athlete to student-athlete, are the foundation for all team cultures to strive and thrive
— individually and collectively throughout the season. Since teammates need each other, affect each other,
and belong together, every team member, regardless of athletic ability, is treated and valued equally.

How did this impact your experience?

TEAM MEETING: THREE REALITIES OF A

CULTURE OF BELONGING
[SHARE] your best experience as a member of a team. What were the ingredients that made this your
best experience?

[SHARE] 1st Reality “WE BELONG TO EACH OTHER”

Everyone on this team belongs to this team. No matter the role, position, or athletic ability. Everyone
belongs to the team equally. Everyone is important and contributes toward the greater good of the team.
On a great team, there isn’t a pecking-order where one group serves another.
[ASK] What are some ways this team can demonstrate we belong to each other?

[SHARE] 2nd Reality “WE NEED EACH OTHER”

The second reality of a great team is that no one can do it alone. Great teams understand they are
connected and no one person is more important than another to the team. A great team understands that
together they are stronger than any one person.
[ASK] What are things that happen or ways we act that get in the way of us being a team?
[ASK] How do we rely on each other? Can a quarterback be successful without an offensive line to block for
him/her? Can a defense tackle the running back without a defensive line?

[SHARE] 3rd Reality “WE ACCEPT EACH OTHER”

We are all different. We all come from different backgrounds, race, ethnicity, family make up, athletic
ability, interests. Great teams accept one another regardless of those differences. Great teams practice
together, play together, win together, lose together, and spend time together. Most importantly, members
of great teams work together.
[ASK] What are the things that make us unique?
[ASK] How can we celebrate those unique differences?
[ASK] What can we do to build team unity? How can we show support for each other?
