When to Use Hyphens
• The French numbers 20 through 59 are formed just like their English
equivalents: the tens word (i.e: vingt) are joined by a hyphen to the ones word
(i.e.: trois).
▪ Ex.: vingt-trois
• 17, 18, and 19 are joined by a hyphen between the first and second digit.
▪ Ex.: dix-huit
• 80 always has a dash between quatre and vingt.
▪ Ex.: quatre-vingt-deux

When not to Use Hyphens

• For 21, 31, 41, and 51, the word et (and) is required in between the tens word
and un, without hyphens.
▪ Ex: deux cent ving et un
• Hundreds, thousands, millions, trillions, etc. do not need dashes.
▪ Ex.: mille cinq cent quatre-vingt-deux

Plural Numbers
• If a number ends in an even cent (100) or quatre-vingt (80), it should be plural.
Anything else is singular.

Examples
▪ 200 is deux-cents ▪ 250 is deux-cent-cinquante
(plural because it ended in 100) ▪ (singular because it ended in 50
vs.
▪ 380 is trois-cent-quatre-vingts ▪ 385 is trois-cent-quatre-vingt-cinq
(plural because it ended in 80) (singular because it ended in 5)

• Cent (100) is singular when followed by another number.

▪ Ex.: 201 = deux cent un

• Mille (1, 000) is never plural, but multiples of million are.

▪ Ex.: 4, 000 is quatre mille
▪ Ex.: 2, 500, 000 is deux millions cinq-cent-mille
• If a number is used to describe specific things, the plural rules don’t apply.
▪ Ex.: “la page deux-cent” (page 200) with a singular cent
▪ Ex.: “trois-cent portes” (three hundred doors) with a singular cent
