huit, dix-neuf
So, how do you say 70 in french
?

Soixante-dix

70 and 60, 10 !
This is where things start to

go a little bit strange.

Numbers 60 - 69 are all 60 +
another number.
ie. 63 = 60 + 3 = soixantetrois
and
73 = 60 + 13 = soixantetreize

FOUR x TWENTY (of

In French 80 is refered to as four
twenties.
80 - 89 are all refered to as 80 + another
number
ie. 83 = quatre-vingt-trois
and
93 = 80 + 13 = quatre-vingt-treize.
Notice that 81 is not written like 41,51

Counting 100+
Overview:

Now being able to say and recognise the

numbers in French up to 100 is good. But at
the same time a bit limited, now it's time to
take a look at all those other numbers
between 100 and Infinity !
Objective:
Understand how to construct numbers from
100 to infinity (..and beyond!)

NOMBRES > 100 !

If you can remember all the numbers up to 100 then

numbers greater than 100 are actually quite

straightforward.

MULTIPLE 20's and 100's:When you have multiple

'vingt' OR 'cent' expressions they are written plural

ie. 80 = quatre-vingts
400 = quatre cents
..BUT..
'cent' only takes an S when it is more than 100 and
not followed by another number.
ie. 210 = deux cent dix! (No 'S')
Mille (1000) though is never plural !
ie. 8000 = huit mille!

101 cent un
111cent onze
222deux cent vingt-deux
333trois cent trente-trois
444quatre cent quarante-quatre
555cinq cent cinquante-cinq
666six cent soixante-six
777sept cent soixante-dix-sept
888huit cent quatre-vingt-huit
999neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix-neuf
