Notes on Angles

I) Angles are created from two rays that share an initial point, called the vertex of the angle.

B
Vertex: A
A
$$$$$⃗ and $$$$$⃗
Sides: 𝐴𝐵 𝐴𝐶

II) We can name an angle four ways. ∠ is the angle symbol.

X
Names all 3 points in order (either order).
∠XYZ
Vertex MUST be in the center of the
name.
∠ZYX

1 ∠Y Uses only the vertex to name the angle.

Y
∠1 IF a number is inside the angle, you may
Z use it to “name” or identify the angle

III) We measure angles using a protractor. We measure the inside angle most of the time.
50°
35°

a) If the angle measure is less than 90°, it is an acute angle.

b) If the angle measures exactly 90°, it is a right angle.

c) If the angle measures between 90° and 180°, it is an obtuse angle.

d) If the angle measures exactly 180°, it is a straight angle (creates a straight line).
