UNIT I STATICS OF PARTICLES 9+3

Introduction - Laws of Mechanics - Parallelogram and triangle law of forces, Lami’s theorem, Principle
of transmissibility - Vectorial representation and operations of forces - Force systems - Equilibrium of a
particle in space - Equivalent systems of forces.

UNIT II EQUILIBRIUM OF RIGID BODIES 9+3

Free body diagram - Moments and Couples - Moment of a force about a point and about an axis -
Vectorial representation of moments and couples - Scalar components of a moment – Varignon’s
theorem - Single equivalent force - Equilibrium of Rigid bodies in two dimensions and three
dimensions. Types of beams, supports and reactions - stable equilibrium.

UNIT III PROPERTIES OF SURFACES AND SOLIDS 9+3

Centroids of 2D standard planes by integration - Centroids of 2D planes including hollow sections by


formulae. Introduction to area moment of inertia - Theorems of Pappus, Parallel axis theorem and
perpendicular axis theorem - Area moments of inertia of plane areas by integration - Area moment of
inertia for 2D planes including hollow sections using formulae - Principal moments of inertia of plane
areas.

UNIT IV DYNAMICS OF PARTICLES 9+3

Displacements, Velocity and acceleration, their relationship - Relative motion Projectile motion –
Newton’s law of motion - Work Energy Equation - Impulse and Momentum - Impact of elastic bodies.

UNIT V FRICTION AND RIGID BODY DYNAMICS 9+3

Friction force - Laws of sliding friction - simple sliding friction - wedge friction - ladder friction –
rolling resistance -Translation and Rotation of Rigid Bodies - Velocity and acceleration - General Plane
motion (disc / wheel and slider crank mechanism).
