Introduction

Figure: Beam segment under shearing stress

Introduction

In equilibrium condition the

summation of the horizontal forces
on the shaded segment is zero.
Therefore, one can write,

Introduction

The expression of the shearing

force, dP acting on the bottom
surface can be found as,

τ = Average shearing stress over

differential area of width b and
length dx

Md. Rakib Hossain, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ME, BUET 4

Introduction
Now writing the differential change in the bending moment dM at the
distance dx equal to Mb - Ma and substituting the value of dP, one finds
an expression of average shearing stress as,

Since we have the relation of vertical shear, V = dM

dx
Therefore, the expression of shearing stress becomes,

Introduction
where, Q is the first moment of area of the vertical face of the shaded
segment about the neutral axis and Q is,

Shear Stress in Rectangular Section

We have second moment of area for

rectangular cross-section,

Shear Stress in Rectangular Section
Now substituting h =2c and A = bh = 2bc,
yields,

We have,

From Equation, it is seen that the maximum

shearing stress will occur at 𝑦1 = 0,

load of 4W as shown in Fig. below. Verify that the NA is 2.17 in. above the
bottom and that INA = 62 in4. Use these values to determine the
maximum value of W that will not exceed allowable stresses in tension of
