1. Can the centre of mass of a body lie outside the object? Given one example.
4. On what factors does the kinetic energy of a purely rotating body depend?
5. A rigid body is free to rotate about an axis. Can the body have non-zero angular acceleration at an instant
when its angular velocity is zero?
6. Rotation and revolution of earth are in the same direction. Taking the rotation and revolution of the Earth
into account, does a tree at equator move faster during the day or during the night?
7. Two discs A and B have same mass and same thickness but A is made of aluminium and B is made of lead.
Which has larger moment of inertia about the central axis?
9. A wheel rotates with constant angular velocity. Does a point on the rim have a tangential acceleration and a
radial acceleration? Are these accelerations constant in magnitude and in directions?
10. If angular momentum is conserved in a system whose moment of inertia is decreased, will its rotational
kinetic energy be also conserved?
11. Does centre of mass and centre of gravity body always coincide?
12. Two particles initially at rest move towards each other due to internal forces. Find the velocity of centre of
mass when velocity of one particle is v and that of the other is 2v.
13. Two uniform circular loops A and B of radii r and nr are made of the same uniform wire. If moment of inertia
of A about its axis is twice that of B, then find the value of n [diameter of wire is much smaller compared to
radii of the loops].
Cutting section CM
Then, state whether both parts are of same mass or not. Also explain reason.
16. A disc rotating about its axis with angular speed 0 is placed lightly (without any translational push) on a
perfectly frictionless table. The radius of the disc is R. What are the linear velocities of the points A, B and C
on the disc shown in figure? Will the disc roll in the direction indicated?

17. Prove that the centre of mass of an isolated system moves with a uniform velocity along a straight line.
18. Find components along x, y and z-axes of the angular momentum L of a particle about origin whose position
vector is r and momentum is p with components px, py and pz. Show if the particle moves in x-y plane, the
angular momentum has only a z-component.
19. A circular cylinder has an inextensible string wrapped around it as shown in figure. What is the linear
acceleration of the cylinder when released?

20. (i) Find the torque of a force 7iˆ 3 ˆj 5kˆ about the origin. The force acts on a particle whose position
vector is iˆ ˆj kˆ .
(ii) Show that moment of a couple does not depend on the point about which you take the moments.
21. A cord of negligible mass is wound around the rim of a flywheel of mass 20 kg and radius 20 cm. A steady
pull of 25 N is applied on the cord as shown in figure. The flywheel in mounted on a horizontal axle with
frictionless bearings.
M = 20 kg
(i) Compute the angular acceleration of the wheel.
R = 20 cm
(ii) Find the work done by the pull when 2m of the cord is unwound. R
(iii) Find also the kinetic energy of the wheel at this point.
(iv) Compare answer to parts (ii) and (iii). F = 25 N
23. (i) Why does a solid sphere have smaller moment of inertia than a
hollow cylinder of same mass and radius, about an axis passing
through their axes of symmetry? F
(ii) A uniform disc of radius R, is resting on a table on its rim. The R
coefficient of friction between disc and table is . Now the disc is
pulled with a force F as shown in figure. What is the maximum
value of F for which the disc rolls without slipping?
24. Rakhi is a student of class 11 th, she is strolling in a park near to her house. She saw a fat girl being teased
by two thin playmates. They are playing see-saw. Rakhi enquired why they are teasing their playmate and
why they are not allowing her to sit on see-saw.
Two thin girls replied that it is not possible to play see-saw with the fat girl as she is very heavy for any of
them. Rakhi told them if the fat girl sits slightly near towards the middle part then, they can see-saw even
with her. And finally that fat girl is see-sawing with one of thin girl. They finally learn to play that game
together.
(i) What technique is told by Rakhi to little girls?
(ii) If mass of fat girl is 30 kg and thin girls are of 20 kg (each), then to operate see-saw properly what
will be the ratio of their distances from the pivot of plank?
(iii) What values are indicated by Rakhi?
(iv) What values are indicated by little girls?
25. Two cylindrical hollow drums of radii R and 2R, and of a common height h, are rotating with angular
velocities (anti-clockwise) and (clockwise), respectively. Their axes, fixed are parallel and in a horizontal
plane separated by (3 R + ). They are now brought in contact ( 0).
(i) Show the frictional forces just after contact.
(ii) Identify forces and torques external to the system just after contact.
(iii) What would be the ratio of final angular velocities when friction ceases?
26. Derive an expression for the acceleration of a solid cylinder rolling without slipping down an inclined plane.
Also find the minimum coefficient of friction required for pure rolling.
