TYPES OF PHRASES

Prepositions connect a noun or pronoun in a sentence to another word in the sentence.


Common prepositions include as, of, in, after, before, to, for, below, above, with,
through, from, out, on, and at. A prepositional phrase includes a preposition; a noun
or pronoun, which is object of the preposition; and words that modify that object.
Prepositional phrases function as either adjectives or adverbs in a sentence.
Example: Kylie lives with two dogs and a cat.
Preposition: with
Prepositional phrase: with two dogs and a cat
Object of the preposition: dogs, cat
Function of the prepositional phrase: an adverb that modifies the verb lives

DIRECTIONS: For each sentence, identify the parts of the prepositional phrases and their
