PERFORMANCE TASK#1
Exogenic Process Worksheet

The earth’s surface is composed of water and landmasses. The solid portion is made out of rocks and minerals
that could experience changes either physically or chemically. The weathered materials are transported by
different agents from one place to another and will settle down in a particular area. These progressions that
happen are achieved by forms called exogenic processes. It includes weathering and erosion.

A. Weathering (20 points)

Weathering refers to the process of disintegration and decomposition of rocks. There are two types of
weathering: mechanical weathering and chemical weathering. This activity will allow learners to differentiate
physical from chemical changes.

Learners will follow the following instructions:

1. Prepare the needed materials: two pieces of paper and match.
2. Tear one paper, observe, and record your answer.
3. Burn the other paper (with supervision of guardian), and observe.
4. Identify the changes that take place after tearing and burning of paper.

What is the difference between physical change and chemical change? (5 points)
- When I tear the paper, the physical change is the appearance, size, and form of the paper, but the
change in substance of the paper does not change or alter. Lastly, when I burn the paper, the
chemical change forms a new substance with new properties because of the fire that the paper has,
and it affects the appearance and size of the paper because of the friction of the fire.

B. Erosion (20 points)

Draw or cut and paste pictures of the agents of erosion. Explain how each of them causes erosion.

Gravity erosion is the movement of
rocks, soils, or sediments caused
by the Earth’s gravity. Usually, the
sediments' movement is
downward, creating a slope that
can transport them from high
elevation to low elevation. This can
occur very slow or very fast, an
example of this is a landslide. A
landslide happens when there are
changes in the slope’s stability
assisted by other factors such as
rains, earthquakes, eruptions, and
more that causes the rocks to start
collapsing. Other examples of this
are avalanches and mudflows.
A. Gravity Erosion
Ice erosion is often the form of
glaciers. In frigid areas, glaciers move
across the land slowly, and as this
continues, they carry all they've gotten
in the path resulting to corrode both
the rocks and the ground. In this way,
glaciers grind up rocks and scrape the
oil away. Mass wasting describes the
downward movement of rocks, soil,
and vegetation. This includes
landslides, rockslides, and
avalanches. Mass wasting can destroy
millions of tons of earth and change
the shape of mountains and hills. And
the natural factors impacting erosion
are climate, topography, vegetation,
and tectonic activity.
B. Ice Erosion
When the rocks, sediments, and
soils follow an active or flowing
water, water erosion occurs. The
sediments can be transferred or
transported to different areas
such as streams, rivers, oceans,
etc. One of the main factors in
water erosion is rainfall which
can damage an outer or top
layer of a landmass. This type of
erosion can also be dangerous
especially to agricultural
aspects as it can affect their
irrigation system. To add, there
are different kinds of water
erosion, these are splash
erosion, sheet erosion, rill
erosion, gully erosion, and
tunnel erosion.
C. Water Erosion
When sediments move from one
place to another because of the
wind, wind erosion happens. This
can often occur in deserts, sand
dunes, beaches, or any place
wherein the soil is granulated,
loose, and dry. One of its factors is
the atmospheric pressure that can
affect the motion of the air, enough
to move sediments in other places.
This type of erosion can also be
dangerous especially to
agricultural aspects as it can
damage the soil’s integrity and
fertility. To add, there are different
kinds of wind erosion, these are
surface creep, saltation, and
suspension.
D. Wind Erosion

The movement of sediments downslope under the influence of gravity is called mass wasting. The examples of
this are fall, slide, avalanche, and flow. On the other hand, deposition is the process in which the weathered
materials carried out by erosion settle down in a particular location.
