WORKSHEETS
Task 1

Read the text and answer the questions.

The story of Saint Nicholas is a famous folktale.

He was a Christian bishop who lived in the 4th century
AD. He was very generous and gave gifts to poor people.

One day, he heard about a poor man with three

daughters. The poor man had no money for a dowry, so
his daughters could not get married. Without a
husband, they would be poor all their lives.

Saint Nicholas wanted to help. He went to the

poor man's house at night and dropped a bag of gold
coins down the chimney. In the morning, the daughters
found the bag of gold coins in their stockings (socks).
They were very happy.

A few years later, the second daughter got

married. Saint Nicholas did the same thing again. He
dropped another bag of gold coins down the chimney for
her dowry. The family never saw him, but they knew
who it was.

Finally, the third daughter got married. The

father wanted to know who was giving them money. So
he waited for Saint Nicholas. When he saw him, he said:
'Thank you for all your help.' But Saint Nicholas asked
him not to tell anyone.
