CHAPTER 1

The problem and its setting

Introduction

What is traveling? Travel is the movement of people between distant geographical

locations. Travel can be done by foot, bicycle, automobile, train, boat, bus, airplane, ship

or other means, with or without luggage, and can be one way or round trip. Travel can

also include relatively short stays between successive movements, as in the case of

tourism.

There are advantages to traveling. It broadens your horizons, traveling not only

provides you with a sense of adventure but helps us to learn more about other cultures

and their life styles. Whether it is a short trip or an extended trip by exploring other

cultures it enhances your knowledge and changes a person’s overall perspectives. It also

gives us a real-life education by meeting different people from other cultures and

exploring other societies provides an education that is near to impossible to get from any

school, college or university. People also become independent because a person will learn

to be responsible for there own laundry, grocery, shopping, accommodation and cooking.

Traveling also creates an opportunity to learn a new language. Being able to speak

another language can open a lot of opportunities.

Knowing all of this benefits, it most be great to travel around the world. But

sometimes many people don’t know if they will start traveling with, or without someone.

alone or with companion.

Objective

 The researcher’s objective for this study is to know which from “traveling alone

or with someone” is the best way to travel

Alternative objective

 Search the media or internet for information or data needed for the study.

 To know what are the benefits of traveling alone and with someone, what are the
disadvantages of traveling alone/ traveling with someone, and which is more
preferred, traveling alone/ with someone?

 To know a person’s experience traveling alone or with someone

Statement of the Problem

The researcher formulated questions to further explain this study. The questions are

The researcher will gather data from media or internet. The data will come from

earlier studies, statements, and articles. This research is analyzed and collected

throughout the year 2019-2020.

Definition of Terms

The following definitions are provided to ensure uniformity and understanding of

these terms throughout the study:

 Cultural Barrier- is when people of different cultures are unable to understand

each other’s customs, resulting in inconveniences and difficulties.

 Null- null means having no value, in other words null is zero.

 Geographical- based on or derived from the physical features of an area.

 Broad- Covering a large number and wide scope of subjects or areas.

 Perspective- a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point

of view.

 Accommodation- a room, group of rooms, or a building in which someone may

live or stay.

Figure 1:The concept map of research about travelling

This paradigm explains that this study focuses on answering the question Which

is the best way of traveling, alone or with someone? This serves as a concept map of the

whole research. Even so, it’s the researcher’s goal to find out what are the benefits of

traveling alone/ with someone. In the concept map, the first phase has which is the best

way of traveling, alone or with someone? as the input. For the second phase the

researcher will gather data from the internet or the media to be analyzed. The third phase

will be the best way of traveling as the answer and will stand as the output or result of the

study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

FOREIGN STUDIES:

 Travelling Concepts in English Studies

 Concepts such as ‘performance’, ‘image’, or ‘space’, which are at the core of the

study of culture and literature are not univocal or firmly established terms. Hence,

they constitute what Bal, in her eponymous book, has called ‘travelling concepts’.

In volume that seeks to explore the journeys of some key concepts and their

effects on the study of culture it is certainly worth recalling that the concept of

‘travelling concepts’ is itself a travelling concept par excellence. It was Edward

Said (1983), who in his essay ‘Travelling Theory’ introduced the metaphor of

travel to refer to the constant transfer. Jurgen Habermas (1987: 322), he maintains

that theories always travel both in space and in time, continually altering their

shape as they traverse distances one academic context to another and being

inflected by the field in which they are used. The journeys of theories are

characterized by selective appropriations and translations according to historical

and local circumstances. (Neumann & Tygstrup, 2009)

 A study of students’ travellers values and needs in order to establish futures

patterns and insights

 If the only viable future for tourism is sustainable tourism then ways should be
sought to increase the demand for sustainable offers. The purpose of this paper is
to explore whether sustainability values influence the travel needs of students.

The aim is to discover cues in the present behaviour of young tourists that can
enhance sustainable travel choices and therefore secure the future of the tourism
industry. Moreover, the study provides a solid basis for predicting the future
travel behaviour of young tourists. (Cavagnaro & Staffieri, 2015)

LOCAL STUDY:

 A Study of Tourist Perception Towards Travel Risk Factors in Tourist

Decision Making

 People from different cultures tend to have different ways of making decisions,
based on the emphasis they place on different phases of the decision making

process. Studies have also suggested that people from divergent national cultures

use different negotiation approaches, and they do so because their perceptions of

the decision making situation are conditioned by the characteristics of the national

culture from which they come. The importance of investigating perceptions of

travel risks has been recognized with in a number of different disciplines, such as

psychology, sociology, criminology and marketing. It is often assumed that

perceptions of safety and security may influence individuals’ destination choice.

(Garg, 2013)

FOREIGN LITERATURE:

 Travelling together alone and alone together: mobility and potential

exposure to diversity

 Our connectedness also matters for the efficacy and functioning of communities

and societies as a whole. Different mobility practices offer different conditions for

being exposed to other people and the environment. They develop an analytical

framework that offers a comprehensive understanding on if and how one’s

experiences of being on the move influence the ability of an individual to develop

a sense of connectedness. (Brommelstroet 4: 2017).

 Which Is Better Traveling Alone or Traveling With a Group?

 Independent travel is good because you have to solve all your own problems. You

don’t get to problem solve if you’re traveling with a group. Instead you’ll have a

lot of help and sometimes you won’t have to do anything. I believe that traveling

alone and fending for yourself makes you a stronger person. It gives you

confidence. It changes your life and makes you a better person. When you travel

with other people, especially with friends. I think one reason why the

relationships go bad when travelling together is because everyone has such

different opinions and desires and expectations. Your friendship could be messed

up by a crack or a slightly sarcastic remark. You better think about who you

would travel with really carefully before you ask your friends to go on any kind of

long distance journey with you. I am not saying which is good or bad.

taken to address the identified challenges that center on inauthentic and

unsustainable tourism products. The marker of destination branding, this work

examines the challenges that its cultural tourism sector is facing in relation to the

growing ecotourism capital. Conceptually, this study argues that the Government

Tourism Policies have a direct impact on the level of Cultural Tourism

Development of a region. It also affects the Tourism Orientations of both the

tourist and the service provider. (Gonzalez, 2016)

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the methods to be used in this study. It also describes

the subjects of the study, the instruments used, and the procedure of data gathering. This

study will determine of what is they prefer for traveling, alone or with someone? by

asking someone to various of questions. This method will clearly help the respondents to

understand the topic and convey the answers properly.

Research Design

This is a qualitative study which used survey and questionnaire were utilized for

data collection. The researchers sought in-depth understanding of whether comfort food

alleviates stress. This research will use descriptive design in determining the level of self-

perception of grade 11 students of Universal College of Parañaque towards body

shaming. Descriptive Research is a research that aims to describe a phenomenon,

behavior, situation or experiences that is used to answer the questions of “why, when,

who, where and how”.The study will help to identify the effects and reasons why the

respondents experienced body shaming based on their own perception.

CHAPTER 4

Presentation, Interpretation and Analysis of Data

This chapter presents the data gathered for the study. The discussion and

interpretation of data are as follows. The data came from 10 people who showed their

opinion about which way of traveling is more preferred. This data will help the

researchers to answer the following questions from the SOP.

1. What are the benefits of traveling alone and with a companion?

From the 10 data sources, the most common benefits of traveling alone is

that you will have freedom about what you choose. The traveler chooses where to

go, how to go there, and what to do when he/her get there. Many people choose to

travel alone because of the fact that there’s more freedom than traveling with

someone. One of the most common benefits of traveling alone is that you will

have a lot of time for yourself, reflecting about the things you do, and thinking

about stuff that needs private space to focus to.

But when it comes to traveling in groups or with a partner, travelers find

more interesting moments with their friends. If there’s a problem they could ask

each other for help and they will feel enjoyable with you and vice versa. When it

comes to expenses traveling with a companion can save a lot of money because

you share the money you use for traveling it means it will cut your expenses in

half if you travel with someone. It also helps you to have someone to enjoy the

scenery, to talk with, to have fun with, and to have a helping hand. It is believed

that joy shared with others are more enjoyable.

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
UNIVERSAL COLLEGE OF PARAÑAQUE 13

2. What are the disadvantages of traveling alone/ traveling with someone?

Both traveling alone or with someone have disadvantages. Based the data

gathered when traveling alone you won’t have that same feeling that when you

have someone with you, like a helping hand or someone to laugh or to talk with.

But regardless of that when it comes to expenses, when traveling alone money

will be a problem. Because of the fact that you don’t have someone to share your

expenses with, you will be alone to pay all your transportation fees and other

expenses along the travel.

But it doesn’t mean that being with someone won’t have disadvantages.

While being with someone yes, you might save a lot of money but what if you’re

the only one who has money, then you’re the only one who will pay for all of

your companion or partner. But also, regardless of that when your already at your

destination you won’t be able to feel the scenery as much as it could when your

alone. You won’t have freedom in choosing where to go. There will also be a

struggle when having someone along because of different cultures, different

traditions, languages etc. etc., but that won’t be a problem if you knew them or

friends with them.

3. Which is more preferred, traveling alone/ with someone?

Based on the data gathered from the internet for them they prefer traveling

outside with friends and family and some want to travel all by their self to

meditate and to focus on something.

CHAPTER 5

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

This chapter shows the summary of the findings, conclusions of the result and

following recommendations for the study.

Specifically, this study intends to answer the following questions (1) What are

the benefits of traveling alone and with a companion? (2) What are the disadvantages of

traveling alone/ traveling with someone? (3) Which is more preferred, traveling alone/

with someone?

Summary of the findings

The gathered information shows that out of the 10 sources of data 9 agreed that

traveling with someone is better, while 1 out of the 10 sources preferred traveling alone.

Conclusions

Traveling alone may be a good way to focus on what you think, or maybe it fits on

people that wants to be alone. But real travel does not mean your just going somewhere

to go and sightseeing. It means having fun and memories that cannot be taken away from

a person’s mind, body, and soul. Having fun and creating memories is better when you’re

with someone, mostly your own family, friends and love ones. This research proves that

traveling with someone is better than traveling alone.
