Ancient Greek philosophers first proposed the idea of atoms over 2000 years ago. Physical properties of matter include hardness, texture, flexibility, malleability, melting point, and boiling point. Hardness determines how an element might be used. Texture and flexibility describe a surface. Malleability is the ability to be pounded into thin sheets. Melting and boiling points are the temperatures at which a substance changes state. Chemical properties of matter were also discussed but not described.

    Atomic theory was invented by the ancient Greek
    philosophers Leucippus and Democritus, who speculated
    that the world essentially consists of myriads of tiny
    indivisible particles, which they called atoms, from the
    Greek atomon, meaning ``uncuttable.

    might be used
    - How resistant solid matter is to external force

    - TEXTURE
    - A visual and tactile quality of a surface

    - FLEXIBILITY

    - The abilty of a substance to be pounded into thin
    sheets

    - The temperature that causes solid to melt
