c. Theoretical Review
 Theories Related
 Definitions Of Translation

Taken from Wikipedia, Translation is the communication of the meaning of a

source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. The English
language draws a terminological distinction (not all languages do) between
translating (a written text) and interpreting (oral or sign-language communication
between users of different languages); under this distinction, translation can begin
only after the appearance of writing within a language community.

A translator always risks inadvertently introducing source-language words,

grammar, or syntax into the target-language rendering. On the other hand, such
"spill-overs" have sometimes imported useful source-language calques and
loanwords that have enriched target languages. Translators, including early
translators of sacred texts, have helped shape the very languages into which they
have translated.

Because of the laboriousness of the translation process, since the 1940s efforts
have been made, with varying degrees of success, to automate translation or to
mechanically aid the human translator. More recently, the rise of the Internet has
fostered a world-wide market for translation services and has facilitated "language
localization".

IDIOMATIC TRANSLATION
When we use everyday a direct translation referring is "word for word". Represent
the meaning of the original text.
Is the precise contextual meaning of the original text in the grammatical

The semantic translation is personal and individual and follows the processes of
the author. Communicative is social concentrates on the message and the meaning
force the text .
COMMUNICATIVE AND SEMANTIC TRANSLATION
Is the meaning of the original,or source text, by using equivalent lenguage, forms
and structure of the target lenguage
PARATRANSLATION
Is the essencial role performed by paratextual elements in translation that is the
participation together with text in the construction of meanings of the published
work.

TRANSLATING ORTHOGRAPHY
The orthographical rules and their different
typographical compositions must be specially taken into account when delivering
quality translations.
Reading and interpreting the image of the letters in titles
Writing in its material side is always iconic. The design and source are important
because using the technology becomes more dynamic process of translation. The
visual aspect of the final image of the letters used to publish a translated book
constitutes an essential paratextual element of any process of translation.
Paratranslating the symbolism of stripes: Some remarks
Stripes are dynamic surface structures that set in motion and vivify every- thing
that they touch, providing an endless thrust forwards of vital energy.
Translation without paratranslation
The translator has performed the visual reading interpretation, but the publishers
didn't paratranslate the visual elements.
Equivalence theory
Explains that the equivalence presupposes a source text and target text which can
have the same value
Finally theory
translated text as a historical document, increasing footnotes and references.
Descriptive theory
Descriptions make sense, therefore lead to something true or false. Translators
tasks vary in function of their cultural or historical positioning.
Determinist or indeterminist theory
Determinists when presupposes a relationship and indeterminist when the
relationship is indirect.
Location theory
A product must be linguistically and culturally appropriate for the target local
market.
Authors who support these theories.
* Anthony Pym: providing different types of theories
* Nida: distinguishes formal equivalence and dynamic
* Steiner: proposes a hermeneutical process
Principles
Translate means a written message from one language to another. The reader
needs to use a translator, which makes mediation or passage from one language to
another. In their work, the translator respects the form of the original text,
preserving the order of the words, translating verbs by verbs, nouns by nouns and
so on. Translations as King James, King James and Almeida are formal
translations and tend to the scholarly language, easily understood by the simplest
people.
1. The word 'equivalent' is used by Catford, Savory, Nida and Pinchuck. While
Mc Guire uses the word 'similar' which are synonymous to the word
'equivalent'.
2. Textual material (Catford), SL text (McGuire), written message (New
mark), and SL message (Nida) are synonymous to indicate something to
be translated into TL.

3. Replacement (Catford) and reproducing (Nida) derive from 'replace' and

'reproduce' which are synonymous. The word 'replace' is used by
Newmark.

 Previous Researches

Before choosing the topic of the research, the writer tried to find related
researches that has a similar topic with this one and found 5 almost similar
research topics. Some were done inside the country and some were done outside
the country.

The first similar research that the writer found was conducted on 2008
by Albertus suwardi, an English Department student of university of technology
Yogyakarta. With the title of “AN ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSLATION OF
THE IDIOMS IN AGATA CHRISTIE’S Mrs. Mc GINTY’S DEAD INTO
INDONESIAN IN BUDIYANTO PRAMONO’S Mrs. Mc GINTY SUDAH
MATI.” Any scientific writing should have a clear purpose. Generally, this
paper is made in order to know about the practice of theory of translation which
is applied into this paper. Specifically, the composing of this paper is for
describing how a translator can discover the closest natural equivalent of
English idioms in Indonesian based on the meaning and the message of the
source language idioms.

Second similar researches was conducted on 2015 by Rofi Al-Anshory ,

an English Department student of MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF
SURAKARTA. With the title of “A TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF NOUN
PHRASE FROM ENGLISH INTO INDONESIAN ON UNILEVER’S
PRODUCT ” Idiom is a number of words which are joined together means
iri.something different from the meaning of the words when they stand alone. In
order to reproduce the closest natural equivalent in terms of the source context,
a translator normally attempts to make adjustments in idioms due to a literal
translation of idioms into another language will not make sense. This paper is
mainly aimed at finding out how a translator can translate and discover the
natural equivalent of English idiomatic expression. The findings show that there
are two types of adjustments that are used in translating the idioms. First, by
non figurative expression equivalent and second, by figurative expression
equivalent.

The third similar research that the writer found was conducted on 2014
by Annisa Nurjannah Adnin, an English Department student Study Program In
English Department Of Languages And Literatures Faculty Of Cultural Studies
Universitas Brawijaya . With the title of “AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION
STRATEGIES FOUND IN ENGLISH-BAHASA INDONESIA SHORT STORY
SOME WORDS WITH A MUMMY” Translation is the process of changing the
meaning of the source language text by means of an equivalent target-language
text. Translation plays a key role in exchanging the information between
languages. The translator should be careful to use an appropriate strategy to
produce a good translation. This study aims to find out the kinds or translation
strategies found in English-Indonesian short story Some Words with a Mummy
by using Chesterman’s theory (1997). Furthermore, the writer proposes three
problems of the study, (1) What types of translation strategies found in English-
Indonesian short story Some Words with a Mummy are (2) What types of
translation strategies that most frequently used in EnglishIndonesian short story
Some Words with a Mummy are, and (3) What the possible reasons the
translator uses translation strategies for translating short story Some Words with
a Mummy are.
The fourth similar research that the writer found was conducted on 2016 by Roswani
siregar, an English Department student of Al – Azhar university Medan, Indonesia. With
the title of “Translation Procedures Analysis : English - Indonesian Motivational Book”
This study deals with the investigation of translation procedures used in the process of
translation of an English motivational book into Indonesian .The type of this study is
descriptive-qualitative that focuses on translation product analysis. The collecting of data
that consist of word, phrase, clause and sentence was done with purposive sampling
technique. The sample of the study is 430 data pairs of both text (English and
Indonesian). The findings revealed nine translation procedures identified in this study.
Those procedures and its frequency are as follows: Literal (181), Calque (5), Borrowing
(32), Addition (105), Omission (33), Modulation (27), Transposition (24), Equivalence
(21), and Adaptation (2). The first three of techniques (literal, borrowing and calque) are
oriented to source text while the rest (addition, omission, modulation, transposition,
equivalence, and adaptation) are oriented to target text.Procedures that oriented to source
text is referred todirecttranslation, while those to target text is referred tooblique
translation. The finding revealed the proportion of literal translation and communicative
translation are 50.70% and 49.30%respectively.

The fifth similar research that the writer found was conducted on 2017 by herman, an
Department of English Education, University of HKBP Nommensen , Pematangsiantar,
Indonesia. With the title of “Shift in Translation from English into Indonesia on Narrative
Text” This research focuses on the theory of shifts in translation to the text of narrative.
The data were analyzed through a translation theory stated by Catford, they were
structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift from English (as the source
language) into Bahasa Indonesia (as the target language). Problem discussed in this
research is: What are the translation shifts used in translating narrative texts from English
into Indonesia? In order to limit the research to be going astray, the writer limited the
analysis to the unit shifts in the high level to lower level and low level to higher level. To
solve the problem, Descriptive qualitative method was implemented in this research. The
data were taken from each paragraph written in English (as the Source Language/SL) into
Indonesian (as the Target Language/TL). After analyzing the data above, the writer
concludes that the unit shifts occurred in the translation into target language is the
forming from high level to lower level and from low level to higher lever. The shifts are
usually created from phrase into word, verb phrase into verb, and word into phrase

Research Method, Technique of Data Collection and Instruments

 Research Method

In order to obtain the purpose of the study, the writer is going to use the
survey research. Survey research method is a research method which is
performed in a direct observation of some phenomenon that happens in one
community. As Faenkel and Wallen (1990) said, Survey Research is a research
that collects information from research samples by giving some questions
through questionnaire or interview which then will describe different aspects of
a population. This statement was fortified by Muhammad Ali in his book with
the title of “Metodologi dan Aplikasi Riset Pendidikan,” survey is essentially a
form of thorough investigation about some facts or phenomenon of behavior
and social towards a subject on a big scale.
The first step of the research would be deciding the problem of the research,
which in this case, is how to increase students interested in translation skills of
second grade students of unswagati university in english department ? The next
step of the research would be creating a survey design, and then followed by
deciding the sample of the research and collecting the data for the research and
the last step would be data analyzing and then making a conclusion.

 Technique of Data Collection and The Instruments of Data Collection

To collect the data for the research, the writer is going to use
survey/questionnaire. The writer has decided to choose some of the second
grade students of University of Swadaya Gunung Djati of English Department
as the sample of the research. An approximate of 10 students, male and female
has been chosen to be participants of the research (respondents).

In the process of collecting the data, each participant (respondents) will

be given a questionnaire that consists of 5 questions which related to the
problem of the research. The questions are written in Indonesian language and
in the simplest language in order to make the students understand about the
questions and hopefully to make them answer the questions comfortably and
truthfully. Right below is the form of the questionnaire that will be used by the
writer to collect the research data.
