GROWERS MASH MACRO INGREDIENTS AND THEIR DCP CONTRIBUTION IN 70 Kg BAG ............... 6
A higher amount of ingested carbohydrates is converted into fats that in future can be
harnessed back into energy.
2. 10kg of Bran.
This helps supply of sufficient fibre which aids prevent constipation. Also, helps the feed palatability
thus increasing the feed intake. Remember, the higher the feed intake the higher the weight gain.
3. 11 kg of Sunflower
Sunflower can be substituted with decorticated cotton seed cake.
Helps in supply of fat and oils. It also supplies plant protein but it’s not a major source of protein at
this stage.
4. 2.7Kg Limestone
Lime is slightly increased at this stage because from grower’s stage the bird will be introduced to
laying. Therefore, the excess lime shall be stored in the medullary bone which will be brought back
during egg formation process. Also, it helps formation of claws and beaks and most importantly the
formation of bones due to rapid growth of birds at grower’s stage.
The above six elements are the macro ingredients. We therefore need to confirm that the feed will
have a DCP of between 16-18%.
Now, let us know each macro ingredient’s DCP contribution in the feed in the 70Kg bag.
1. Maize has a universal DCP of 8.23%. Percentage DCP contribution in 40Kg will be
8.23/100 x 40 = 3.3%.
3. Sunflower Seedcake has a universal DCP of 35%. Percentage DCP contribution in 11Kg
will be 35/100 x 11 = 3.9%.
4. Fish meal has a universal DCP of 55%. In our case, the percentage DCP contribution in
3Kg will be 55/100 x 3 = 1.7%.
5. Soya bean contain a universal DCP of 45%. In our case, the percentage DCP
contribution in 3.5Kg will be 45/100 x 3.5 = 1.6%.
6. Lime contain 0% DCP contributing to 0% DCP in our feeds. I.e. 0/100 x 2.7 = 0%.
The mixture attained the required threshold DCP of 16% but the feed is not complete.
Why?
We don’t have the micro-ingredients which will supply the minerals, enzymes and vitamins.
Therefore what are the micro ingredients you need and in what quantities.
By introduction of these micro ingredients, then our growers’ feeds will be complete.
Spread out the ingredients evenly on the mixing area, starting with the bulkiest ingredient at
Use a shovel to scoop the material and heap it onto one side of the area.
Mix gently from sides to sides, left to right, back to center and vice versa.
Therefore, after mixing the macro ingredients, it’s time now to introduce micro ingredients starting
with the large in quantity.
Mix gently from sides to sides, left to right, back to center and vice versa.
Repeat the heaping process on another side until a homogeneous mix is achieved. Do the
mixing again uniformly to avoid some concentration of ingredients at certain feed
places.
So that will be our 70kg of growers mash. A complete feed with both macro and
micro ingredients with a DCP of 16%.
NOTE:
To improve on feed quality, farmers making their own feeds should always have it tested to
ensure the fee is well balanced. For instance in Kenya, the KARI Centre in Naivasha has
modern feed testing equipment that can test all nutrients and even the quality of the raw
material used. It costs a small fee for the service. After preparing your feed, take a 1kg
sample for testing.
