MANHOLE COVERS & FRAMES
Cast Iron manhole covers in certain areas are being stolen at an alarming rate. This is causing a lot of worry among the public authori-
ties concerned, because not only does the open manhole become a menace to life and limb, but it is costing a fortune to replace them.
This can be overcome to some extent by the use of the locking bars but these add greatly to an already expensive product and are
clumsy to maintain because the keys are always getting lost or the lock jammed.
The precast concrete cover on the other hand, is not as expensive and it has little to no resale value and is therefore proving to be a
more economic solution to this particular problem.

Two types of concrete cover and frame are manufactured. These are:

CONCRETE LID MEDIUM DUTY & HEAVY DUTY LID

This is a conventional concrete Lid,
630mm dia
adequate for most situations. They may be either:
a) “Medium Duty” for use in midblock sewers
and out of the way pipelines, or
b) “Heavy Duty” for use on sidewalks

The Lids have steel lip rings to protect the concrete from
spalling under the continuous impact of traffic. The use of a 560mm dia
simple steel “lifting hook” is recommended for opening the
cover instead of picks which will damage the edges. CONCRETE FRAME

TYPE B
This is referred to as a “Replacement Cover” since it’s main
function is to replace cast iron covers that has been stolen.
These are designed to t the existing cast iron frame and carry
the same load as required in terms of SANS 558/1973.

PRECAST BASES
Precast Base Unit
The prefabricated base unit provides the foundation, channelling, benching and starter ring all in one complete unit.
It also includes a rubber ring coupling at each outlet. There are many advantages in using a prefabricated base:

a) Structural – High strength, factory made concrete for the foundation where loads often exceed 200 KN.
b) Chemical – Only “Dolomitic Aggregate” is used, thus ensuring a prolonged life against the aggressive
environment in the manhole.
c) Water Tightness – The factory made concrete guarantees water tightness and provides a exible joint at
the point where the pipes are subjected to the greatest movement. Less joints to leak.
d) Time – No standing around waiting for the concrete to cure- No battling to pour good concrete in the
mud and - No waiting for the next certi cation because the manholes are not complete. Lay
approximately 4 per hour.
e) Effort- Construction is simple, There is constant height from “Level of invert” at centre of manhole to
underside of foundation – so excavate to this level. The required fall is already built into the slope of the
channel – drop the base unit into position and start laying pipe.
f) Adaptability – Joints available for P.V.C Pipes.
g) Hydraulics – The built-in gradient on each junction allows for the head loss that occurs in each case.

ENLARGER SLABS
Enlarger Slab
The “Enlarger Slab” was developed for three reasons:
a) It doubles the use of the existing prefabricated base thus providing considerable saving in cost.
b) In a normal 1000mm diameter base it is not good practice to have more than two junctions as it leaves very little
room for a man to stand. This is no problem when using an enlarger slab as there is a working platform all the way
round. This means that it is now possible to have all the junctions in one manhole, giving a further saving in cost.
c) The mass of a 1250mm diameter base would be very difficult to handle.

Construction
The Enlarger Slab is bonded to the base by any appropriate epoxy thus providing an indestructible and watertight joint between the
two components.

KERB INLETS
General Requirements
Any Stormwater system is only as good as the kerb inlet. There are ve essential requirements to this vital structure as follows:
1) Hydraulic Efficiency - This is the most important aspect of a kerb inlet and therefore requires the greatest attention including
the need to remain unblocked at all times.
2) Structural Strength - The proximity of this structure to the road requires that it is capable of withstanding any static or
dynamic loads to which it may be subjected.
3) Safety - Any deviation of the kerb lines, or the gutter creates a potential hazard for passing traffic or pedestrians.
4) Maintenance - Without suitable access for periodic cleaning, this will soon become clogged and of no use whatsoever.
5) Economies of cost - The Kerb Inlet represents approximately 15% of the value of a stormwater reticulation and
should therefore be cost effective.

The Salberg range of Kerb Inlets attends to these needs as appropriate. These are divided into two groups, the rst being suitable
for use in subcritical ow conditions and the second, for supercritical ow conditions.

Type 5 Kerb Inlet
The type 5 Kerb inlet is a U-channel which is available in 2000mm and 1000mm sections, 1000mm sections are manufactured with an
angled channel with a 45° skew end. Slabs for the Type 5 Kerb Inlets are 1500mm in length. One of the slabs is manufactured at the
same angle as the skew end channel and the other straight. Slabs are cast with angle iron on the front.

Channels are designed with the rear being higher to accommodate the height of the pavement and kerb, with the front being lower to
accommodate the height of the road. Water is intercepted at the level of the road and ows into the channel. Each channel is cast with
a 450mm x 1000mm hole where the junction box is built allowing water ow from the channel through the opening into the junction
box, where it drains into the stormwater pipe.

SLOTTED DRAINS
General Requirements
Inadequate drainage systems lead to the problems of accumulated water on the surface of roads and parking areas.
This is not only inconvenient for pedestrians but can cause major traffic accidents and hold-ups. The slotted drain is
ideal for gently sloping areas and the bottom of sag-vertical curves, where its advantages are:
1) It is hydraulically efficient and drains all along its length
2) Its simple to clean and has no grates to be bent or stolen.
3) It creates no obstacle to the free ow of tra ffic.
4) It is a pipe and a drop inlet in one.
5) Closed pipes run only partially full whereas this will run 100% full.
6) It can be used on kerbed or un-kerbed areas.

ROADS AND STORMWATER
CHANNELS
A. Taper Chute Channels
There have been many attempts to nd a satisfactory method of draining stormwater for steep slopes and embankments. Most of these
have proved to be costly and doubtful efficiency.
The Taper Chute Channel provides an economical and simple solution to this problem that is both mechanically and hydraulically appropriate
for this particular application. The units are designed to be mechanically interlocking so as to provide for the
longitudinal thrust due to the mass of channel above each joint and at the same time, provide sufficient exibility to cope with slight settle-
ment or scour of the supporting material. The kinetic energy in the water is reduced by:
1) The turbulence created as it is forced to converge and jump to each section.
2) The reduction in the overall gradient due to the step effect of the interlocking sections

Laying the units is simple as they can be manhandled into position and requires no mortar or other jointing materials.

A. TAPER CHUTE CHANNEL B. Trapezoidal Channels

These have an advantage over half-round channels in that
50mm 375mm they do not slip out of alignment when loaded along one side.
The nish along the top edge is also far superior to that of a
half-round pipe.

SECTION 5
ELECTRICAL
MINI SUB-STATION PLINTH
Mini sub-station plinth
An electrical contractor has three major problems in this area. These are:
1) He is not organised to deal with concrete and shuttering on a large contract.
2) He cannot get into the trench to compact under the mini-sub.
3) He does not have the time or the equipment.

The result is the eventual subsidence of the concrete foundation under the large mass of the mini-sub and therefore an unsightly tilted
structure. Precast units are an economical solution to these problems.

Lack of standardisation by the manufacturers of electrical equipment does, however, pose a problem for the precast concrete suppliers.
The following range of plinths and bases has been built up over the years and is offered to him to be used at his discretion.
