Objective
To know the relation between the
coefficient and the roots of qudratic
equation.
Roots of the Quadratic Equation
The roots of a quadratic equation are the values
of the variable that satisfy the equation. They are
also known as the "solutions" or "zeros" of the
quadratic equation. For example, the roots of the
quadratic equation x^2 - 7x + 10 = 0 are x = 2
and x = 5 because they satisfy the equation.
The Formula
sum of the roots:
x₁ + x₂ = -b
a
Examples:
1.) Find the sum of the roots of the equation x²- 12x + 10 = 0.
a= 1 b= -12 c=10
(x-10) (x-2) = 0
-b
x₁ + x₂ =
x -10 = 0 x-2 = 0 a
x₁ = 10 x₂ = 2
-(-12) 12
x₁ + x₂ = = = 12
1 1
x₁ + x₂ = 10 + 2
= 12
Examples:
2.) Find the sum of the roots of the equation x²- 8x+12=0.
a= 1 b= -8 c=12
(x-6)(x-2)=0
-b
x₁ + x₂ =
x-6=0 x-2 = 0 a
x₁ = 6 x₂ = 2
-(-8) 8
x₁ + x₂ = = = 8
1 1
x₁ + x₂ = 6 + 2
=8
Examples:
3.) Find the sum of the roots of the equation x²- 3x+2=0.
a= 1 b= -3 c=2
(x-2)(x-1)=0
-b
x₁ + x₂ =
x-2=0 x-1 = 0 a
x₁ = 2 x₂ = 1
-(-3) 3
x₁ + x₂ = = = 3
1 1
x₁ + x₂ = 2 + 1
=3
Examples:
4.) Find the sum of the roots of the equation x²- 10x+16=0.
a= 1 b= -10 c=16
(x-8)(x-2)=0
-b
x₁ + x₂ =
x-8=0 x-2 = 0 a
x₁ = 8 x₂ = 2
-(-10) 10
x₁ + x₂ = = = 10
1 1
x₁ + x₂ = 8 + 2
= 10
Examples:
5.) Find the sum of the roots of the equation x²- 5x+6=0.
a= 1 b= -5 c=6
(x-3)(x-2)=0
-b
x₁ + x₂ =
x-3=0 x-2 = 0 a
x₁ = 3 x₂ = 2
