QUADRATIC
EQUATIONS
ILLUSTRATE QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
Quadratic equation is an equation where the
highest exponent of the variable ( usually x ) is a
square (²).
So it will have something like x². But not x³,etc.
It is usually written in the form of ax² + bx +
c = o where a, b and c are any real numbers
and a ≠ 0.
THE TABLE SHOWS EXAMPLE OF QUADRATIC
EQUATIONS AND NOT QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
QUADRATIC EQUATION NOT QUADRATIC EQUATION

x² = 9 x³ + x² + x = 4 (exponent is 3)

a² + 3a + 2 = 0 + 3 = 9 (radical equation)

(x + 5)(x – 2) = 0 x + y = 6 (linear equation)

2x(x – 5) = 11 (x² + 1)(x² - 2) = 0 (polynomial

equation)
= 2 + 2y² (polynomial equation)
5 + x² = -4x
Writing Quadratic Equations in the form of ax² + bx + c = 0

1. 3(2x + 1)² + 2 = 0
2. 2x(3x + 2) – 5 = 0
3(4x² + 4x + 1) + 2 = 0
6x² + 4x – 5 = 0
12x² + 12x + 3 + 2 = 0
Therefore a = 6
12x² + 12x + 5 = 0
b=4
Therefore a = 12

b = 12 c = -5

c=5
3. (x + 4) (x + 4) = 0 5. 8x² - 6 = 0
x² + 8x + 16 = 0 Therefore a = 8
Therefore a = 1 b=0
b=8
c = -6
c = 16
6. 3x = 9x²
4. 7 – 5x² = 4x
-5x² - 4x + 7 = 0 9x² - 3x = 0
Therefore a = -5 Therefore a = 9
b = -4 b = -3
c=7 c=0
PRACTICE EXERCISES
Write YES if the equation is quadratic and NO if it is not.
1. 6(8x + 12) = 0  NO
2. 11 = x²  YES
3. (x + 4)² = 2  YES
4. x (5x² - 2x + 3) = 0  NO
5. 6x + 7x² = 5  YES
Write each equation in the form of ax² + bx + c = 0 and identify
the values of a, b and c.

1. 8x² + 5 = 7x 3. (x + 6) (x + 6) = 0
8x² - 7x + 5 = 0 x² + 12x + 36 = 0
a = 8; b = -7; c = 5 a = 1; b = 12; c = 36
2. x(8x – 6) = 3 4. 5 + 3x² - 7x = 0
8x² - 6x – 3 = 0 3x² - 7x + 5 = 0
a = 8; b = -6; c = -3 a = 3; b = -7; c = 5
