Key Stage 2
---- Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6 ----

2023 - 2024
1

We have the pleasure welcoming all our primary students and

we are looking forward to knowing each one of them. We are
sure that our learning journey at Sahara International School
will be very interesting to each individual student.

This Handbook acts as a guide to every day school routines

and sets clear standards to what we expect from our students
and parents. As well, it highlights and explains briefly the
curriculum, which the school follows in Primary Stage.

We understand that moving from lower primary to upper

primary stages is considered a big step in our students’
academic path and that such transitional stage may take
some time. Students as well may start school with high
enthusiasm and then they may show less enthusiasm.

We are totally aware of all of these changes and we are

always willing to support. All what is expected from parents is
to allow students speak about their challenges, encourage
them and give them enough time till they cope without
comparing them to other students.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

2

We understand that parents expect students to achieve

outstanding scores in all the academic subjects and we
always do our best to support our students achieve their best.
Meanwhile, we believe that each student is talented in a
different way and our role is to help them discover their true
self and their unique talents.

Our goal is to guide them excel in what they find themselves

at. Academics and talents are never contradicting at our
school.

We are very keen to empower our students through

developing their skills, emotional intelligence, personalities
and knowledge. This takes place through our daily classes
where learning happens through the serious work and their
social interactions that take place with our guidance.

3. SCHOOL Working Hours

Students’ Arrival

Our school day starts at 7:45am and

all our parents are expected to
encourage our students to be on
time and respect school time. This is
very essential for students to learn
the value of time.

We understand that slight delays

might happen occasionally but attending the morning line is of
great importance as it is an integral part of the school’s schedule. It
is a time to cultivate a sense of belonging towards our school and
trains us to respect and appreciate what others have done for us.
As well, it is a channel to know what is going on around us in school
every day.

The school drop-off time is between 7:15am and 7:45am. Students

who come before 7:15am will be unsupervised.

Students who come with their parents are expected to enter the
school through P1 Gate and then move to the school playground
for morning line attendance.

Students arriving after that time will move to school reception.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

8

Attendance will be taken promptly at 8:00am. Students are

considered late starting 8:01am.

Late students arriving after 8:30am will NOT be permitted to enter

the school gate, and will be asked to go home unless the parents
have notified the school in advance by email or phone call in case
of emergency and the late excuse is approved by the school.

Students arriving from 8:01am till 8:30am are expected to enter the
school through School Reception and the supervisor will take them
to their respective classes.

Students who arrive from 8:01am till 8:30am, which is the beginning
of the first period and after the morning line will be disciplined as
follows:

1st time: Parents’ notification.

2nd time: In-school suspension for the first period and parents’
notification.

3rd time: Student will not be allowed to enter the school for that day
and parent is requested to pick up the student.

Students’ Dismissal

Our school day ends at 2:00pm. Students

who use the school buses will move directly
to their respective buses.

Students who are picked up by their parents

will wait in the playground with the
supervisor on duty.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

9

A student will not be dismissed unless the parent shows the Student
ID to the supervisor on duty. If the Student’s ID card is lost, the
guardian is requested to contact the admissions office to report the
loss of the card and request a re-issuing of a new card at a cost of
50 EGP, payable at the Purchasing Department, Mrs. Nahed Michel.

Additional copies may always be requested by the parent,

following the same abovementioned procedure at the same cost
per card.

Students who go home on their own, need to submit an Exit

Allowance at the beginning of the year.

Parents who pick up their children later than 2:30pm will be charged
50 EGP for each half an hour tardy, payable to the supervisor on
duty.

Parents, who will pick-up their children from school, as an

exceptional day, must inform the respective Bus Matron before
12:00pm.

Early exit permits

Students are allowed to leave the school before the actual end of
the school day (2:00pm) only upon a prior permission for an early
exit, approved by the School Administration not before 12:00pm
and only for the following excuses for the student or for the sibling(s)
at Sahara:

1. Personal illness. 3. Travelling abroad.

2. Death of first- or second- 4. Championships.
degree relatives.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

4. ATTENDANCE AND
ABSENCE

Regular attendance is crucial

to our students’ education.
Disruptions to school
attendance can have a
significant impact on
student’s academic
performance.

Every day is of significant importance and it takes students to new

journey, new perspectives and new adventure. Missing any of them
will significantly affect our students.

Our students should attend school consistently and should be

absent only for illness, death of a family member or championships.
Parents are highly expected not to schedule extended family
vacations during school days.

After student’s return, a proof of absence (medical report,

championship documents or travelling papers) is required to be
submitted to Students’ Affairs office within a period of 5 days at
maximum.

Any missed work will be communicated to parents through school

LMS upon the submission of the proof of absence. Moreover, the
student will stay for office hours with his/ her teacher for extra
support.

7. CODE OF CONDUCT
Our code of conduct sets the standards we expect our students to
be up to. It clarifies how school reinforces the positive behaviour
and how students take the responsibility of their acts. It ensures a
secure learning environment where all students are motivated,
encouraged and treated fairly.

Sahara International School has 5 values that we seek to imprint

them in our students, whether inside or outside the school. Our
parents are highly encouraged to motivate our students to keep
applying these values in their daily life activities.

1. Excellence
Excellence is the criterion we set in everything we do, when
we study, field trip or on our fun activities.
2. Responsibility
Students learn to behave as mature individuals who take
responsibility for their words and actions and stand up for

Our strength is not in our similarity but in the diversity of
methods and ideas, we enrich one another with.
4. Integrity
We are individuals whose beliefs rest on honesty and truth.

8. CURRICULUM GUIDE

Sahara International School

follows the British Curriculum as
stated by Cambridge
University. The school gets to
enjoy access to a variety of
resources offered to us via the
Cambridge International
Examinations (CIE) board.

The Cambridge Primary English Curriculum Framework promotes an

enquiry-based approach to learning to develop learners’
confidence, creativity and intellectual engagement. It is designed
for learners who have English as a first language and can be used in
any cultural context.

The curriculum framework provides a comprehensive set of

progressive learning objectives for English. The learning objectives
detail what a learner should know, understand and be able to do in
each year of primary education.

The Cambridge Primary English Curriculum Framework provides a

solid foundation from which learners can work towards study at
Cambridge Lower Secondary.

Divided into six stages, the curriculum framework covers knowledge,

skills and understanding in the three strands, Reading, Writing and
Speaking and listening.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

9

Within Reading and Writing, learning objectives are grouped in sub-

strands which have a direct relationship with the reporting sub-
strands of the Checkpoint tests, allowing teachers to link feedback
from the tests to teaching.

Facilitating skills that have broad application within Reading and

Writing are included as learning objectives in the sub-strands
develop broad reading skills and develop broad writing skills. These
skills are best assessed through teacher-, peer- and self-assessment
and are not directly assessed in the Checkpoint tests.

Whenever the assessment indicates that the student is below the

required level, a special levelled class is settled (office hour) and
student’s progress is monitored closely. Student’s progress will be
based upon student’s continuous efforts and parents’ continuous
feedback.

The Cambridge Primary Mathematics curriculum is presented in five

content areas: Number, Geometry, Measure, Handling Data and
Problem Solving. The first four content areas are all underpinned by
problem solving, which describes using techniques and skills and the
application of understanding and strategies in solving problems.

Mental strategies are also a key part of the number content. This
curriculum focuses on principles, patterns, systems, functions and
relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical
knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

10

The Cambridge Primary Science curriculum is presented in four

content areas: scientific enquiry, biology, chemistry and physics.
Scientific enquiry is about considering ideas, evaluating evidence,
planning investigative work and recording and analysing data.

The scientific enquiry objectives underpin biology, chemistry and

physics, which are focused on developing confidence and interest
in scientific knowledge. Environmental awareness and history of
science are also incorporated.

The world-class Cambridge Primary Curriculum is based on

international best practice in schools. The curriculum is dedicated to
developing learners who are confident, responsible, reflective,
innovative and engaged. Each curriculum framework is designed to
engage learners in an active and creative learning journey.

In addition to the Cambridge Framework, Sahara International

School students are given the following classes:

Arabic
French
Character Building
Computer
Music
Art
Physical Education – PE
Dancing

9. Parents’ Role in Supporting Learning at

Home
At Sahara, homework is an integral part of learning. It not only
supports the learning process in general, but also incorporates what
students have learned at school.

Homework is a useful tool in gauging students' understanding of

lessons taken at school. Also, homework teaches students essential
independent study skills and responsibility.

Home assignments are communicated via school Learning

Management System (LMS). Students download their home
assignments from the school LMS, complete them at home and
submit them the following day at school.

For this purpose, it is required that parents provide students with PCs,
printers, Microsoft Office, PDF reader, etc.

Homework assignments of each subject are divided across the week

to help students organise their study time throughout the week.

Students who fail to submit their homework on time or students who
submit a plagiarised or a copied piece of homework will be
disciplined according to the school disciplinary policy:

Loss of recess while spending time doing the undone piece

of homework.
If the student fails to do the late piece of homework, parents
will be notified of an “After-School Detention” for the student
on the following day.

Students are expected to bring books, files and sheets or any other
required equipment with them daily based on their daily schedule
sent on our school LMS.

Parents are expected to:

Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a

well-lit place to complete homework.
Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud
music, or phone calls.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

13

Help students value homework and support the school in

explaining how it can help their learning;
Check LMS accounts daily to check assignments posted.
Encourage students do their own work. They won't learn if
they don't think for themselves and make their own mistakes.
Parents can make suggestions and help with directions. But
it's a kid's job to do the learning.
Help students manage their own time and encourage them
to submit homework on time.
Send a mail to the teacher if the student is unable to solve
the homework or takes longer time than expected on the
same day.
Ensure that homework involving the use of the internet is
monitored very carefully.
Praise their work and effort not only the grades.

10. Assessment Tools

Our academic goals have
been based on the
Cambridge framework. We
have adopted methodology
consisting of various methods
we use with each individual
student according to his/her
skills and speed of learning
aiming to achieve the highest possible results.

In case students who score below our minimum requirements, their

academic level will be discussed with their parents and students
shall be directed to sit for retake exams.

Students who fail more than 2 subjects in their end-of-year

certificates are advised to transfer to another school.

The school assessment and grading system is shown on the following

12. Trips

At Sahara, we believe that trips are an invaluable part of student

life. Students take part in both entertainment and educational field
trips.

Trips are attended in regular school uniform unless otherwise

communicated by the school.

Parents might be allowed to pick up their children from the fieldtrip

destination upon prior approval. Those parents are expected to
show up on the exact pick-up time and ensure their student’s ID is
available for show-up. School bus will not wait for late parents.
Students will not be picked up unless the student ID is shown by the
parent.

All school rules and procedures apply to off-campus activities

including field trips. The School will not accept any payments for
trips after the announced payment deadlines.

Trips/Field trips are considered an important part of students’

learning journey; meanwhile, students who are not registered in a
trip should remain home on that day.

Any urgent calls throughout the day can be made via the school
mobile number 01281268641, which will be available throughout the
trip time.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

22

Parents are expected to collect students after the trip from school
premises upon showing the student’s ID.

13. Medical Overview

At Sahara, we care about each student’s

health. Thus, we always care to inform you with
any vaccination taking place and our regular
hygiene check-ups.

We have our full time doctor who always deals

with any minor injuries or illness and sends a
medical report clarifying the reason(s) and the treatment followed.

In cases of serious injuries or illness, school doctor will contact

parents immediately.

Parents are expected to keep the student’s medical information

always updated.

Any student with a temperature over 38 degrees must be picked up

by the parent and get back home. If the student has a high
temperature or does not feel well, please keep him/her at home.

If the student needs to take any medication at school, it must be

clearly labelled with name, dosage and the times at which it should
be administered. This information should also be sent by mail to KS2
and Middle School Deputy Head.

In case of contagious diseases (chickenpox, head lice, unexplained

fever, gastroenteritis, hepatitis A, etc...) the student is strictly

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

23

prohibited from the daily school attendance and not to be back

before full recovery and a certificate of recovery is received.

14. Transportation
The school has a fleet of modern, comfortable buses to transport
our students safely to and from the school premises. For the safety of
our children, there is a bus matron to supervise them on their journey
to and from school.

School buses pick-up and return time is set at the beginning of the
school year by the School Transportation Manager. All students are
expected to be waiting for the bus at the assigned place and time.
The bus will wait no more than 2 minutes for any student.

On return time, if the parent was not at the drop off location on
time, the bus will wait for 2 minutes and move on with its normal
route with the student on-board until contacted by the parent.
Under no circumstances will the bus matron leave a student at the
designated location if the parent is not there to receive him/her.

In case of occurrence of a problem on the bus between a student

and his/her colleague(s), parents should not interfere into the
problem, or talk to other students at the school. Parents are
expected to contact the school administration to solve the
problem.

Parents who pick up their students from school or bring them to

school, as an exceptional day, must inform the bus matron
maximum by 12:00pm.

Mobile phones are not allowed to use by students on school buses

for any absolute purpose other than making or receiving short calls;

meaning, playing games, listening to songs, watching downloaded

videos or streaming them, internet browsing or any of the like is
completely prohibited. In case a student insists on using his/her
mobile phone for any of the purposes mentioned above, the Bus
Matron will give him/her a direct verbal warning and will
immediately report to the Stage Head, who is going take the
suitable disciplinary action based on the incident.

Parents Handbook – KS2 – 2023/2024

25

On the school bus, our students are expected to:

Speak in a low voice without shouting.

Dealing with Parents’ Concerns

Parents’ first contact point at School is the homeroom or subject

teacher. Parents are expected to contact them through email in
the following cases:

Changes in family situation (divorce, new baby, move)

Medical issues that arise or change
Change in behaviour noticed at home
Family emergencies
Championships dates
Academic concern

Teachers are expected to reply back in 2 business days. In serious

cases, teachers will call the parent or fix a meeting to put an action
plan to support the student.

If parents are not satisfied with the outcome, they are expected to:

Contact the respective Head of Department via school

email or the scheduled phone calls on 01288177711.

E-mail/Call KS2 and Middle School Deputy Head:

KS2 and Middle School Deputy Head, Mrs. Safaa Sayed,
receives parents’ calls every Wednesday from 9:00am to
10:00am on 01090792794. She will be having a previous

Mrs. Safaa meets parents on Sundays from 10:00am to
1:00pm. Parents are expected to call School Reception
Thursday by 12:00pm maximum and ask for an appointment
before coming.

Meet School Director

Our School Director, Mrs. Azza Anis meets parents the first
Sunday from each month. Parents are expected to call
School Reception Thursday by 12:00pm maximum and ask
for an appointment before coming.

We want to make sure that our communication with parents is

always efficient and achieves the maximum benefit. For this,
parents are expected to follow the above hierarchy whether
through emails, phone calls or meetings.

Going with this order helps us solve any concern in a very early
stage. Parents should expect that all Sahara staff is always caring
for their students, supportive, and helpful whenever needed.

Throughout the year, we have 2 official parents’ meetings where

parents can schedule a meeting with homeroom / subject teachers
to see their classwork portfolios and follow up on their children’s
performance at school.

During the summer vacation, communication with the School

Director and the Stage Heads, including both the LMS emails and
personal meetings, is suspended. Parents can reach out to the
school administration only via the school landline.

17. Parents-Teachers Association (PTA)

PTA stands for Parent Teacher Association, a school-based

organisation with a mission to facilitate parental participation and
communication in school.

PTA’s main role is to build strong working relationships among

parents, teachers and school, in support of students’ benefits.

Parents who are members of the PTA seek always to support in a

positive way, feedback school’s management with any aroused
issue and participate in solving it whenever needed.

Parents volunteer in many school events and campaigns by being
